So...

I spent some more time at the Sony store today, focused on gaming this time.

The staff kindly let me spend a considerable amount of time playing Call of Duty on both the 850 and the 900 and I came away as undecided as ever.

First I'll get some of the less relevant (to today's outing) observations out of the way.

Aesthetically I found that I am still more attracted to the aesthetics of the 900, as the monolithic design just looks so much more refined than the more conservative "budget" look of the 850. Maybe if the 850 didn't have those seams on the corners of the face I would feel different. Well... I suppose taste is subjective. Then again the set is going to spend a lot of time off, so aesthetics can be considered important I guess.

The audio on the 900 is actually pretty awesome when supplemented with a subwoofer. I was impressed.

I think I prefer the picture of the 900 in general? But...

When playing Call of Duty, I started off playing on the 900... while it was "doable" it wasn't a particularly comfortable experience and I couldn't help but feel like I was "fighting" the 900.

I found myself playing on the 900 for a while, contemplating and trying to decide if I could "come to love" this set for gaming.

I then moved over to the 850 and we switched the PS3 over to it where I continued to play... instantly I noticed a difference. It felt like I was now able to "breath" freely and the gaming experience was much more enjoyable. I didn't notice the set as much. I wasn't fighting it.

Now maybe I'm overly sensitive because I work in video games professionally... but it was what it was.

This makes my decision making A LOT harder now because there is no clear cut "superior" set.

Maybe this is a result of the 900 being the more premium set, but the 850 benefitting from being newer.

Maybe I am going to need to wait for the next 900. :-/

Thanks for the feed back guys and confirms further I'm making a wise decision.

In keeping with simplicity and making the most of less, does the 900 require a Darbee? Seems like to take advantage of that would require buying an AVR to pass the blue ray and HR34 through one Darbee or get an Oppo 103D and a Darbee for the HR34. I'm not concerned as much with the added cost as I'm with all the extra gear. Seems like the panels processor is exceptional on its own and I might just be content with out it.

I ask because if the Darbee is a material improvement than perhaps getting the Oppo 103D plus Darbee for the HR34 makes the most sense, otherwise, I'm just getting the proper featured BD player and be content that less is enough. Thoughts from those that have a Darbee to the 900 and have compared with and without greatly appreciated.

I have the X900 and a Darblet. I need to make you aware of several things. First of all, the Darblet will not pass a 4K signal. So, if you plan on experimenting with up-converting to 4K anywhere other than in the X900, you can't have a Darblet in the signal chain. For example, I also have a Denon 4520, which can up-convert to 4K, but not if I use the Darblet as well. Not a big deal, but I thought I would make you aware of it.

With the Darblet in the signal path, I get all the benefits of PQ enhancement due to the Darblet processing. For those familiar with Darbee Vision, it is a nice PQ enhancement. However, that brings me to the second issue I am having with my Darblet. If I pass a 1080p through the Darblet to the X900, the picture on the display becomes unstable. By unstable, I mean it starts blinking about once per second. The blinking stops if I change the input signal to 1080i. This isn't an issue with DirecTV input signals, which are 1080i anyway (or 720p), but for the Oppo Blu-ray or the AppleTV, I would rather be outputting the native 1080p signal, but it doesn't work without the blinking. I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue, so I really don't understand what is causing it.

Having said that, the PQ on the X900, being fed the 1080i signal, is superb. And the Darblet makes it even better.

I am a music freak... classical/opera, but somehow the simplification of the sound makes it all more intimate and pleasing. I suppose something will bring me back to the 7.1 but it's been months now.

Well, while I wouldn't go so far as to want the money back that I spent on my 5.1 setup, I completely agree about the "freedom from fuss" aspect of the X9's sound. It's kinda weird to have such movie-friendly audio coming from a TV, with crisp highs, solid bass and a thoroughly convincing 'surround' effect. It's a lot more neighbour-friendly too.

I was just looking on YouTube for the 103D and there were a few of it on the x900 so that might be a good match. Perhaps I go that route and leave the HR34 as is. The other option might be to wait for an AVR to have the Darbee logic and route everything through that with singe link to the panel.

While I ponder my options I guess I'll just enjoy the panel with the DirecTV and see how pleased I am. Might end up not needing anything else other than a sub woofer. smile.gif

I was having trouble with white spots on a dark screen but only when I select a different scene select than auto. Why would this be? Notice it when playing battlefield and trying to use game mode, any ideas would be appreciated. Update, I Played around with it and I think it's the light limiter or dynamic control causing this issue, either way it looks way better now, no more spots on left side of the screen in dark scenes!

Wow. At current pricings, the XBR65X900A has depreciated much more than the top Panasonic plasma has since the summer.
Depending on when you purchased your combo of the media player and the 65". one could have paid $1000 to $2500 more.
That's like buying a new car.

I am really tempted by the 900. Especially given the price drop and server incentive...

... but the gaming issue versus the 850 still has me a little hesitant.

I actually played the same game on PS3 on both sets side by side and there was a marked difference.

I was so surprised and disappointed (I actually walked into the store with my heart set on the 900... ended up walking out having to delay my purchase in order to dwell on the matter further), that I handed the controller to someone else and asked them what they thought (before revealing my own opinions). They confirmed what I was observing.

Perhaps I was "doing something wrong"?

Been playing everything from Call of Duty to racing games either online or not on the XBR65X900A since September. No issues. Of course, I have not played the games with a X850, so I cannot compare the two.

What I can compare is the gaming performance on the PS3 with my older 46" Samsung 1080p TVs.
The 4K Sony upscaled the frames fine with the same response.

Hrmmm... perhaps I would have been happier had I not done the direct comparison... though, as per my post from yesterday, I did notice something amiss with the 900 (just felt uncomfortable, like I was fighting with/being held back by the set) even before I tried the 850 to compare it to. As I noted in my previous post, it could also be that I am more sensitive to this than the average person.

Do you play in Game mode? Does it make a difference? Perhaps I should go back to the store and try again with the sets set to Game mode.

I do switch to game mode on Xbox with the X900. It seems when any of the processing on you can tell.

If you buy a 4k TV purely for console gaming then your an idiot.

You buy this set for
1. 4k movies
2. 3d movies
3. General Pc use and gaming

My priority for buying this tv was for 4k gaming on pc. Although its 30Hz at 4k certain games are not affected by input lag and look brilliant i.e. Arma 3.

Now my missus has claimed the tv and its out in the living room. The sad thing about Australia broadcasting is that all the tv programs are 576p lol. But when we get sports (720p, 1080p) you can see the difference. I watch a lot of shows now in simulated 3d. Its like looking through a window and the colors look great. Im very happy with this tv and ive spent ours and hours doing research for this purchase and this tv is easyly the best for my needs and taste for now and well into the future.

Agreed ;)

But, to each his/her own...

If they have the money, and want to buy the TV for gaming - more power to them!

I really, really, really want this TV!

The only hang ups I have are that it is not full array; 4K content is so limited it is almost non-existent; you know next year(s) they will have even better 4K TVs (as always); they are already talking about 8K!

And just as I almost finished replacing all of my DVD movies with their blu-ray versions!!!

How clever. Such an impressive display of wit.

No one ever claimed the above, and in fact I would say that if a person is someone that games a lot and decides NOT to consider all of the ramifications of selecting a particular set, INCLUDING gaming, then THAT person is either an "idiot"... or wealthy enough to afford one set for gaming and another for "everything else", or just doesn't give a poop.

I for one don't have money to burn in such a reckless manner, so how about we keep the needless judgements to ourselves eh?

I have an older Sony flat panel and have never had to switch it over to Game mode, so guess I've been spoiled in that regard.

I'm waiting for CES in January. Then i will buy a second tv.

In fact, if anyone wants to meet me there I'm going.

I want to see Vizio's 4k models.

Vizio are a little like Hyundai, they wait... then they copy everyone.. and come out with a good product.

Just caught my wife watching SD channels in the bedroom again.

What am I to do?

How do you explain to a woman that "Thou must not watch SD on this Sony tv?" Or I will give you a good spanking!

What do you mean?

They reimbursed you the difference between $5500 and $5'000 ??

Is that only for people who bought directly from Sony?
