Exactly. Note the euphemistic use of the word "solution". Wouldn't it be easier just to write "software upgrade" if that's what's coming for our sets?

I spent enough on a PS4, X1 and X900a last year to wait this time. TBH very limited 4k Netflix steaming content won't be super high bitrate I'd imagine, I don't care how good the compression is and does any one have some more sour grapes wink.gif

Great, very informative article!

Just one question, from the article -

What’s also interesting about next-gen Netflix is that it’s supposedly not just about extra pixels—the company has stated that it will eventually support 60 fps streams along with 10-bit color.

4K Blu-ray

The good news here is that, instead of simply upping Blu-ray’s 1920 x 1080 pixel count to Ultra HD’s 3840 x 2160, other factors such as increased color bit-depth, extended color gamut, and high dynamic range encoding are all being considered.

Do the 2013-2014 Sony's support 10 bit color - or only 8 bit...?

Will Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs support 4K streaming Content?

Article ID: 45145  |   Last Updated: 03/17/2014

The Facts about Sony® 4K Ultra HD televisions and 4K streaming content:

Since all 2013 Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs are already equipped with HDMI® 2.0 and the latest copy protection (HDCP 2.2), Sony will be offering a solution this summer to support the latest high efficiency video coding (HEVC) video compression format that will be used in the upcoming Netflix® 4K streaming service and other sources. More details will be available soon.

NOTE: More information regarding the HDMI 2.0 standard, including HDCP 2.2 is available at HDMI.org.

All Sony 4K displays currently support the features defined in HDMI 2.0. This includes 4K/60P playback. They also support the newest copy protection that ensures a Sony 4K TV will connect to the next generation media boxes. Sony wants to provide consumers with as many options as possible, so Netflix 4K will also be available with Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs.

Sony's Video Unlimited 4K Service:

Streaming video to your Sony 4K Ultra HD TV is one way to watch 4K video. Another method is Sony's Video Unlimited 4Kservice.

Streaming video services use adaptive streaming technology. The quality of the video or movie being streamed using adaptive streaming will vary based on the available bandwidth that is being provided by your Internet service provider (ISP). 4K streaming requires a stable Internet connection with a minimum Internet speed of 15 Mbps.

Sony's Video Unlimited 4K service is available now using the FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD media player and offers the highest4K picture quality available. The high picture quality is possible because it is a download service (as opposed to a streaming service) that requires  compression.

Video Unlimited 4K also offers an extensive number of Hollywood movies and TV dramas, counting over 140 titles as of today, and will continue to offer the latest 4K native content for consumers to own. Available now on the service is the hitTV show Breaking Bad, as well as movies including Elysium, After Earth, This is the End, and many more.

As far as I read this...

The title makes it "clear" [quotes] that they are referring to Sony TVs themselves... no?

Stating:

Will Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs support 4K streaming content?

I guess my "problem" with the article is when it states:

NOTE: More information regarding the HDMI 2.0 standard, including HDCP 2.2 is available at HDMI.org.

All Sony 4K displays currently support the features defined in HDMI 2.0.

And here are the features as defined on the HDMI 2.0 link of HDMI.org that they provide in the article -

HDMI 2.0 specification defined a new, more efficient signaling method, for speeds above 1.4b limits (10.2Gbps), to allow higher bandwidths (up to 18Gbps)...

Does HDMI 2.0 support BT.2020 (rec.2020) colorimetry?
Yes. HDMI 2.0 includes support for BT.2020 Colorimetry with 10 or more bits of color depth.

Video Formats defined in BT.2020 and supported by HDMI 2.0 specification:

– 2160p, 10/12 bits, 24/25/30Hz, RGB/4:2:2/4:4:4

– 2160p, 10/12 bits, 50/60Hz, 4:2:0/4:2:2

What are the 4K formats supported by HDMI 2.0?

8bit

10bit

12bit

16bit

4K@24

RGB

4:4:4

When, according to the Sony specs on their website - MOST of the above is not supported - on either the 2013 or 2014 models...?

I guess the new Blu-Ray-Player will support 4K-Video-Content. Since the Bd S790 is already able to upscale to 4K. At least i hope so...

btw: Thanks @ Austin Jerry and Geoff D for your tremendous help -> Picture settings and other stuff. You made my day wink.gif

Just one thing keeps me wondering. Nobody uses the Clear Plus-Option!? The X9 is my 5th Sony TV. I dont want to miss this option anymore. The motion resolution is far superior and the black level much better. Absolutely no SOE. The overall brightness (backlight at max) of the picture is absolutely sufficient. At least in a dark room. I think you should give it a try.

Sony KDL-55W900A vs. XBR-55X850A and XBR-55X900A

Back in January 2012, I bought a Sony XBR-55HX929 at Best Buy.  The TV had a great picture but unfortunately, in January 2014, the sound started to cut in and out.  Eventually, Best Buy concluded that the TV was defective and they replaced it with the Sony KDL-55W900A.   Just before Geek Squad hauled away the XBR, I turned the TV on one last time so that I would be able to compare the picture of the XBR to the new KDL.  As soon as the KDL came on, I immediately told the Geek Squad technician that my old picture was better.  He made a few adjustments to the settings and said that it would take several months for the colors to stabilize.

Last week, I had Geek Squad come out to look at the TV, but they said that the TV was fine. (BTW, I have high-def cable; I don’t download movies nor do I have a blue ray player.  I primarily watch news, sports, and movies. One thing that I really liked about my XBR-55HX929 was that I never had to make any adjustments to the settings and all channels looked good.)  On the KDL, I have tried adjusting the backlight, brightness, color, and hue, but still can’t get what I want.  I have a couple of complaints with this TV.

1.     If I adjust the color to look good on one channel, when I change to a different channel, the colors no longer quite so good.  Specifically, people’s face colors don’t look natural.

2.     If I watch a baseball game or hockey game, red jerseys look artificially bright.  They have an almost neon-like quality.

3.     If I watch a hockey game, on far away shots the ice is so bright, it makes the players jerseys look almost black and white.

Best Buy has told me that if I want to get the same PQ as I had, I will need to spend an extra $1,000-$1,500 to get the 4K XBR-55X850A or XBR-55X900A.  Best Buy and Sony claim that a 4K TV will make even ordinary cable broadcasts look better.

Is there any way for me to test whether or not my KDL is defective?  Do you think that 4K TV’s really can improve basic cable broadcasts?  I asked Best Buy to do a side-by-side comparison of the KDL and the 4K TV’s but unfortunately the 4K’s only run Sony produced loops that were shot in 4K, so it is impossible to do a fair comparison.

I have to decide by April 4 whether I want to keep this TV or buy one of the 4K models. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure where the best place is to post this question, so I posted it in the KDL-55W900A, XBR-55X850A and XBR-55X900A threads.  If this is a violation of this site’s policy, let me know.

LOL, I guess the lesson "learned" here is that if you want the best price on a TV - you wait until April 1...

I occasionally use Clear because it doesn't affect the brightness too much, but Clear Plus is much too dark for my liking (my backlight's set at 2). I've spent too long calibrating the TV to just turn up the backlight in such a wild and crazy way, and with it set at 2 it practically eliminates the issue (which I've mentioned before) of the side-lighting bleed on my 55X9. Now my TV's so ****ing good it hurts.

And get last years 900a model - which in this case is not a bad thing.
I would be surprised if the price drops again since it just did last month - but its still a great deal.
I paid 1,000 more than the current price for the x900a on sept 1st and have no regrets buying it then.

Hi :

My opinion is that the Sony 4K TV's do make all TV broadcasts look better. It makes sense all broadcasts will be upscalled to the native resolution of the panel. In this case 4K

And you can see the difference:

The key word for 4K is momentum. The industry has decided that it will happen.

This message will be destroyed in ten seconds.

Buy with confidence it's only money

Ditto- looking for the 65" 900a, and would love to find a lower price.

btw- to answer a few of the previous posts- I was able to get the guys to take the set off the SONY 4K stream and hook it up to the same feed as the other sets and the difference on a cable feed is very noticeable. I read a lot of the articles where reviewers stated that you only could notice a difference if a few feet away, but from 10 or 15' the difference was very apparent.

It's unfortunate that the 65" 2014 sets seem to have switched to the active 3D, since I can't watch active 3D without getting sick. The passive is fun to watch, though. Any suggestions for passive 3D glasses for kids? Are there any that are better than pthers- not sure what to search for. Thanks for the info.

It looks very good but the audio seems compressed and gated. There are portions in this 4 minute trailer, where the M&E get crushed by the dialogue.

There is never a good time to buy a TV, unless it is a slap you in the face deal at a local B & M store when they are dumping product.

I agree, the sound still seems compressed except for the final scene where electro is after spiderman, the sound realy seems clear and hits hard. I think this film should be free as a thank you from sony to everyone who invested in last year's X1 tongue.gif lol

Yes, according to what has been already "leaked" - it is the 65" and above.

That goes for the new 2014 B model TV as well - the player is included with the 65" and 79" model.

btw- to answer a few of the previous posts- I was able to get the guys to take the set off the SONY 4K stream and hook it up to the same feed as the other sets and the difference on a cable feed is very noticeable.

If I had kids I would just pocket glasses from Real3d theaters, can't get any cheaper than that. smile.gif

I guess you ask because they will trash them? The 65" passive comes with 4 cheapo (but not worthless) pairs. Not a huge visual quality difference between sets of glasses, but build quality varies. Highest PQ quality I've used has been Oakley Rocketfish but as I noted a few days ago they are discontinued and hard to find now. 35 bucks a pair.

No follow up model from Oakley it seems.
Otherwise go to Amazon and you can get really cheap packs of 4 for like 20 bucks.

I watched Pacific Rim 3d last night with the Oakleys. Wow. I usually try to describe experiences here but I don't even know how.

No... there was no price drop on the Sony 4K models...

Sony just added the 4K player in with some models.

Why is the US and CAN pricing so different on the 850A? Sony.com has it listed for 2599, with the EPP program is like 2,200, and the Canadian site lists it at 3,900 and it's backordered? How can the TV be backordered when I can walk down two blocks and buy from the Sony store?

I swear every time our dollar dips a little below the US be get priced gouged...
