The MSRP for the 65X900B is $5,499. Do you think it will go on sale April 28th at that price or will retailers discount it?

Did the 2013 models initially sell at MSRP? Should I expect the same for the 2014 models?

The 65" A had a MSRP of $6,999.

The 55" A had a MSRP of $4,999

I don't believe either's street price came close to that...

I am guessing/hoping that the 65" B will probably come out at $4,999 - and you will be able to get it online/etc. for less...

Although it probably is the case that it cannot play 4k through USB, has anyone actually got a hold of that USB stick and dissected the contents? The Samsung 1st gen 4K sets also claim they do not support 4k via USB (and they don't for the most part, I tried it and on the Sony too, was a no go at the time), but users found their demo USB material was encoded using some specific file names and split into 4 1080p files and then it played it as 4k. They then made their own material by splitting them into 4 1080p files and naming it the same way as Samsung's demo and it plays. Maybe Sony is doing something similar?

I can comfirm those clips on the USB stick are 1080p upscaled, not 4k. actual 4k content has 3840x2160 on the bottom right corner of the screen as someone else said here earlier. it looks almost as good as X1 content. yeah, thats how good the upscaling is.

No offense, but these show nothing as to the upscaling ability of the TV...I'm sure they look a lot better in person but really they aren't proving any point here...even scaled up to 100% they are blurry.

I don't know what my best buy is using but dang if I'm not going to find out tomorrow. If its not 4K then this all means that I haven't even seen real 4K yet. Something to look forward to... real 4K!

i am aware that these pics look bad as my phone is horrible, but the point i was making IS, these are some of the same clips you see at BB and on the last picture you see the resolution of the USB video.ans yes, the video looks phenomenal in person without question!

Yea, its awesome, but I've already talked myself out of it. Need to maintain some self control. I am considering exchanging this one though, but if I end up with something worse I'll be pissed. I've tuned down the backlight but still get some bleed on the sides. Like white lines running down the sides. Its a little distracting. The ones in the stores I have seen do not do this... what is wrong with my luck? Does yours actually do this? Was yours manufactured in Mexico or Japan? Mine was Mexico , May 2013.. almost a year ago! Its not like these are flying off the production line though.

actualy mine was made in Japan, but i still have a bit of the edge lighting, but not to the point where it is a distraction. i have no corner flashlighting or clouding though, and that is good enough for me. smile.gif i have inky black bars when watching widescreen blurays. If it bothers you, i would exchange it. i am the same way tongue.gif i expect my tv to be almost perfect, specialy after dropping the amount of cash i invested.

LOL, are you sure you didn't get an early prototype? jk There was probably a limited number from Japan that made it to US.

Wow, you need to talk to other guy that just bought one. He's getting his on Monday! But I'm like you... the waiting is so hard. I had to wait only about a week though. I was so eager to get the thing I placed a pickup order from a store 2 hours away, but turned out they didn't have it in stock as noted.

My Best Buy Magnolia has the 4K media player hooked up to the 65x900a and that is playing 4K content.
The 4k difference, from what i have observed, is additional detail in the picture.
This difference is not as drastic as what we all experienced when viewing Standard Def vs High Def years ago.

Hi Guys :

Some best Buys have a media player that they use for demos and some have a closed loop system that is provided to them from sony ( No one could tell me what was in this closed loop system ). this was told me by the regional magnlolia manager for the Northeast.

So depending on the store that you go to you may be seeing an actual 4K demo. Which has been expanded or most likely downloaded on to the closed loop box and replayed like the media player does. This method takes a very large hard drive to store all this data (just like the media player).

I am not talking about all the demo material but there is some 4K demo content that is being seen at some Best Buy stores. At least I was told this by a high level and( very knoweledgeble .and video savey person.

When I tried at Magnolia to replicate the sound on/off issue I was having, I was told the media player is not the same configuration / hardware as the one that I took home so they would not be able to try it. I was not totally sure if it was a matter of the 65X900A or the X-1 itself. I have not had any reason to doubt them, and they have stood by me and come through for me on several other home theater issues I have had. In other words, I trust them.

The sound on off problem sounds like a problem that I and many others were having with the media player connected to the TV and 2nd output of media player connected to an AVR This is a handshake issue and the bandaid is (1 ) disconnect the receivers output while using the media player. ( this will stop the on/off sound output OR (2) If your receiver has 2 outputs switch to the second output while using the media player.Do not switch the cable just the receiver output which should not be connected.

I was not happy that I have to do this so I returned my media player. hope the 2nd generation media player will have this audio issue repaired and also it would be nice if the 2nd generation player would be able to passthru a 4K receiver so we could get some HD master audio out Instead of the Sony PCM.

Oh well I am not holding my breath.

Didn't know about this closed loop system from Sony for 4k, but that would make sense..

I made sure that the BestBuy that I bought my tv/media player from had a tv with the media player hooked up to it to see 4k, and NOT a USB stick.

So, if those USB sticks are not 4K - and only 1080p being up-scaled...

I have never seen 4K on this TV...

And here I was astounded at the picture I was seeing...

Wow...

I think sony will discount it quickly cause the 65" samsung that just came out a few days ago was supposed to go for $5000 and I think it's selling at $4000 already by all the retailers. I see street price for the sony around $4500 cause I'm going to guess wholesale will be something like $4175.

OK. As promised. I got the details on that Sony demo USB stick.

I cannot make a copy. Store policy!
But I looked into it and copied down the files and info.

In the 4GB stick:

6 folders
1. 4K feature videos : 7 videos all 1080p
2. Real 4K videos: 3 2160p videos made by Sony FDR-AX1 - This is NOT playable when directly plugged into the Sony XBR65X900A but playable when copied over to a dedicated box connected to the 4K TV by HDMI. This box is not the 4K server and i cannot see any markings on it. So it is not retail.
3. 4K photos
4. Triluminos pics
5. 4K vs HD - pics
6. 4K test images

Now that's out of the way.
Check out my 2160p video from the Sony FDR-AX100 i made earlier today.
(in your 4K set)

I had a play around with a BDPA6000 (a.k.a. a repackaged BDSP790) Blu-ray player today because I wanted to check the 4K upscaling, see how it differs from the TV's scaler.

Good point: when watching in 4K the TV doesn't downsample the horizontal colour resolution (check the Chroma Multiburst 540 line pattern in S&M 2nd ed) even with Cinema scene select, and it really does seem like a more intensely colourful image as a result. (It's no wonder that Sony's 4K demos look so incredibly rich and vibrant.)

Bad point: the 4K upscaling generates heavy banding in the RGB colour ramps, in red and especially blue, so colour gradation (banding) when watching real world content is noticably worse than with the TV's scaler. And the TV's Smooth Gradation feature can't be used with a 4K signal, and the similar Smoothing feature in the player itself is also disabled. Additionally, it won't pass the below-black squares in the Clipping pattern.

Good point: the player's 4K upscaling just about passes the single-pixel checkerboard in the Image Scaling 24p pattern (remember that the TV needs Reality Creation and Mi4K set to On before it will do this with a 1080p input).

Bad point: the A6000's 4K output generates a slight layer of noise around areas of fine detail when using the TV's Reality Creation, and it gets even worse with a 1080p signal. But if I switch over to the 1080p output of my Panny BDT320, there's no noise whatsoever in the 1080-line bursts, single-pixel checkerboards and so on. It's funny how Sony's own player reacts so adversely with this TV.

So the TV's onboard scaler still wins because it generates a smoother, cleaner picture in terms of detail and colour gradation, although it's a PITA that it fudges colour resolution unless you're using the Game scene select. I would just watch 1080p with Game all the time (Motionflow is disabled, it's no great loss) but even though it's set to the exact same picture settings as the Cinema mode I'm getting noticeable light bleed at the sides of the frame. Perhaps the backlight scans differently in the Game mode?

Afaik the cinema mode on Sony TVs are somehow unique. You cant achieve the same (perfect) settings in other scene modes. Cinema mode is perfect for movies. Copy and paste wont help. Look at the gamma and greyscale. Its different with the same settings.

Turn the black level down to 49 and see what happens. On my 55 it's remarkable how much better the side light artifacts are when I turn it down from the default/reset value of 50. In fact while fiddling with it it's dramatic that something bad happens when i move the black level above 49; instant obvious sidelight issues. Your mileage may vary.

6 folders
1. 4K feature videos : 7 videos all 1080p

Excellent! we have facts and interesting one ones. Thanks so much William.

So there is something out there besides a PC/Macbook that can play 4k files;

I'll speculate the "streaming 4k solution for early adopters" promised by Sony as posted by Lee; (aka X1 replacement, aka H265, aka...) that everybody else has speculated about will look a lot like what William just spotted...

I had the same experience of Cinema 1 and 2 "seemed" different with the same settings, ditto general and so on. But I have no spectrophotometer to verify that, and assumed I was again mistaken.

It makes sense the scenes do something (why bother having them if they are just different defaults) but a little agro as the differences are not documented or described.

And last thought of the night: Anybody else waiting to see what the upcoming 950 series looks like? Sounds like the TV I actually want (backlight issues resolved?) but that's just based on speculation/marketing hype. Sony's not stupid, they must have something up their sleeve to make them think they won't just canniblize 900 sales...

Perhaps I'll be looking to trade my 55x900a in if I can get the WAF for an even bigger panel...
