But it seems funny that you would be able to download a 4K movie onto a USB drive - but not be able to watch it from that same USB drive...?

An external USB drive (one that houses a spinning hard drive) is a completely different device from a USB thumb drive.  Of course the file will play from the external drive--the question was whether a 4K file will play from a thumb drive.  Do you understand the distinction?

FYI, Underworld Awakening is a superb 3D blu-ray, and not a bad movie. A bit gory but super fun. I'm on 2nd viewing in the last 3 days. I don't even like vampire movies. If you're not familiar with the series its vampires vs werewolves, lol. I just love the 3D on the X9.

Well, as I stated, I do not know...

But why would the X10 care what type of USB device is connected to it?

If it can play 4K via a USB connection - why would it care if it is a USB drive or a USB thumb drive?

Does that make sense?

No, that does not make sense. These are different device types.

In any event, the X10, other than having the newest 2.65 for 4K streaming - is basically just for renting and buying 4K content from Sony?

Wonder if the price is going to be "reasonable"...

ok, the question now is: if I download, for example, a 4K video from YouTube, I'll be able to play it via this new media player?

Buy a MacBox Pro laptop for $1,200. A lot more than the x10 will be, but you can play youtube and presumably netflix 4k, PLUS have a useful computer. I'm sure there are much cheaper PC world laptops/etc that do this too. And if you wait a bit you can play the new 4k BD disks on the new laptops too.

However you'll miss the opportunity to pay Sony $35 to rent a movie for 24 hours, and be forced to buy a new BD player from SONY too…

It's a nice TV, but I'm tired of getting played by Sony

Or you can do what I did and build a Gigabyte Brix Pro or buy an Intel Nuc for that matter for much cheaper. Now if the old Sony 4k media player didn't allow you to play youtube video players through its USB input then I doubt the new one will, as It only states
portable hard drive connection to work with downloadable content from Sony's 4k movie Site as I understand.

The Sony 4k media player I think recognises a different file format. I think it is "sen" file extension from memory but don't quote me on that and when you connect a USB drive and you download movies, it saves to the drive in an extension that is recognised by only
the Sony 4k media player. I am pretty sure thats how it works. As far as I know it doesn't allow you to read any other file extensions like mp4 etc and play them back through the media player as far as I am aware. The new player maybe able to do it at a later date through firmware upgrade
but don't hold you breath. We are still waiting for the PS4 to playback 4k content and it still hasn't materialised.

Ordered my 65X900A last night and should be here Saturday. Was told by the store manager that I still need to call Sony to upgrade my TV to communicate with the X1. I'm assuming they are referring to the HDMI 2.0 but I thought I read previously that all TVs built after a certain date come already upgraded. I have no intention of using the X1 and will be selling it but want the functionality. I'm searching now and will call Sony support at 9am but does anyone have the quick answer?

My understanding is that for future hardware HEVC solutions I would need HDMI 2.0.

HDMI 2.0 is firmware update the TV will do as soon an you're connected to the internet.

HDCP is the board (for early run of sets) that had to be physically installed in your home. It might already be installed on your more recently manufactured television.

https://4kactivation.com/

(on the form it says "If you have questions about the Free 4K Premium Service Activation, please contact Sony at 1-855-476-6945.)

Submit the form (above) but I am not certain they do the install unless you say you "have the X1."

Amazon is in an optimistic mood today, since they sent me an email this morning suggesting I might be interested in the 55" x900a and 850a (as well as several Samsung 4k 55" models further down the list, wonder how cool they are wink.gif ).

I guess the money I spent with them on the 65" last year entices, somehow.

Slightly off topic, but I'm thinking of replacing a 46" XBR4 with a 55" X900B. I realize that the X900A wasn't offered in 55 inch size, but I'm curious if any of you current owners have used something like below to mount the 65" version. If so, any feedback regarding stand size, rigidity, stability, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks for the correction. Anyone with a 55" attached to one of these type of stand mounts?

I knew I got that mixed up. If I'm not usin the X1 than is there any reason to concern myself with it? Not even going to bother with the X10 and prefer for a solution like OPPO possibly providing. HEVC.

My recently purchased (from BB) X9 55" was made May 2013. That alone kinda bugged me. But the carton had the X1 sticker on it. Somewhere on this thread they state that the sticker indicates its already upgraded. Find that strange, but ok. Anyway, when I checked that website, indicating that I had the X1, it told me I was all set to use the X1. I don't have the X1 so I can't say if its true or not.

I remember reading (here) that the location of the HDMI(4) connector changed on the sets that were manufactured, complete with the new HDCP board.

On the first run of sets, the HDMI(4) was at the rear left side in a single indentation.

Doesn't matter to me really. TV is going back for various reasons. I'll either reorder direct from Sony or from a discounter, tax and shipping free.

Thank you, but I'm from Italy and that service is available only for U.S.

But if you tell me that the configuration with the HDMI 4 alone on the side needs an hardware upgrade, I'll try to receive some support from Sony italy..

Thanks..

I believe the 4k rentals are $10. Not bad, actually. The box is overpriced though.

There are a number of 3D movies on Netflix streaming, but they don't seem to work with the TV's built in Netflix player. Instead, I used my PS3. Some of them look pretty good. Mostly iMAX type feel-good films. But there are a few horror type films and shows, too.

So you pay 500 dollars for a device will "enable" your 4k TV you paid 3k for only to have to pay 10 dollars each time you want to actually use it?

Sounds like a great deal to me...

$8 dollar rental price and I got the media box for free. And don't sound so surprised people pay the same price for Smart phones then pay a subscription to use it and then pay to have apps on them too does that make smartphones bad?
