that is inherent in LCD / LED technology. You do not need to move very far off center to begin seeing this effect.

What are the chances the new 65X850B is pretty much the 65X900A without the ears? Just got my new 65X900A waiting for the install guys to come Monday. Mine was Made in Mexico in April 2014. Hope that's a good thing. If there are big problems I may just send it back and wait for 850B if it's basically the same TV. I'm not that thrilled with the ears.

I believe that the 850B does not have Triluminos backlighting. It also has frame dimming rather than local dimming. It seems like a pretty significant downgrade compared to the 900A.

You are right about the frame dimming but according to Sony's site it does have Triluminos display tech and X-Reality Pro picture engine.

Not too much info on Frame Dimming, my understanding is that it is a cheap dimming mechanism where each frame is analyzed and the entire screen is dimmed based on that...is that true? any of the experts on this care to clarify?

Yes, that is correct. But with local dimming, the screen is separated into lighting zones that can each individually have their backlight adjusted.

I've also read that people are having trouble with the HDMI 2 Audio out on the X1 working with their A/V receivers. Could that be worked around by just using the Optical Out from the TV back to the receiver to get the audio instead of the HDMI 2 on the X1? I have a 5yr old Denon and a little worried about the audio problems.

Thanks
Carl

If any of you want to check your TV for the red ghosting (mainly because I would like to know if the newer panels have the issue) you can watch this clip on youtube at 4:18 when Keenan leans forward... then as he leans back you might see small red trails from his eyes, nose, and mouth (it is a blood-like color). There are probably many other situations where it would be apparent (areas of high contrast, like his dark pupil/iris surrounded by the white sclera) but when I saw this on TV the red trails/ghosts really jumped out at me, and it was the first time I had ever noticed it. At least one other member on AVS has commented on it. He and I both had early production March or May 2013 x900a 55ers. I don't know if the youtube resolution / compression would affect it showing up, but I wouldn't think so. I captured this when it was on air, at 1080i. It may very well depend on your TV settings also.

If you'd rather not know, then just IGNORE THIS!

that is a good plan in your case; I did the same thing when I had my X1..

My amp was a few years old as well, and it didnt pass arc and was only hdmi 1.3,so connecting that way worked the best.

Geoff, sony europe have announced the european version of the FMP-X10, the X5.. It seems practically identical to the US model, no mention on an eventual HDCP 2.2 requirement, so we shouldn't have problems to use it with our set, with the configuration with HDMI 4 on its own.

Maybe the following infos can be useful also for the american users: available from August for 399€.

EDIT: it's not clear yet, but some rumors talking about a significant difference from the X10: no physical hard disk.
If this will be true, it'll a foolish choice from Sony!

You can get a free Hulu Plus 1 year subscription with this TV using this link:
http://www.hulu.com/plus/SonyTV2013

Just enter the activation code from the TV's "one week trial" into the web site, and you will get a 1 year activation.

Well I'll be.... appears it worked! Thanks!

I've been a AAA member for 4 decades. I logged into my account at www.aaa.com. There is no discount listed for me that would apply to the Online Sony Store where I purchased my XBR65X900A. I wonder if it is a region specific discount? Mine is Chicago area AAA. Wish I had the code.

Yes, I do this, and I get a good audio signal. Problem is, it is limited to stereo--it won't do DD 5.1 or any of the advanced lossless audio formats. So I set my AVR to PLII Cinema. I don't care much because there isn't anything on the X1 that I care to rent or purchase.

Why no hard disc? Because there's still no 4K Unlimited service outside of the States. You don't need a hard drive if there's nothing to download. Pass.

Sure, but what if I want to store my personal 4K contents?

400€ (350£) only for add the hevc codecs support?
Mmmh.. I think that I'll look for something else, at this point.. Something like the Nuvola media player, for example.. Much more versatile..

Yep, that's why I'm not bothered with it. Sony clearly have no intention of doing their 4K movie downloads anywhere else but the US, so for me it's now about hunkering down and waiting for 4K Blu-ray. Fingers crossed there's an announcement at the next CES, with the launch to follow in autumn 2015.

That's part of the HDMI spec, unfortunately. You can't decrypt the audio and send a 5.1 signal out the optical audio port (unencrypted). You have to downmix it to stereo first.
