The biggest complaint for me is the unknown with sony. If I knew the x10 would get updates to support future streaming services, it would be an easier pill to swallow. For example, if it they would add amazon or any other service that decides to stream 4k. If it stays with just netflix and the sony unlimited store, it is too expensive.

thats why throwing away 500 bucks on something that almost certainly wont be updated by Sony is just plain silly..
Its gonna take a 3rd party like Roku or Apple to release a affordable, fairly priced 4k streaming solution; it will NEVER come from Sony..

What can I say? I guess some of us are actually eager to watch native 4K content on our expensive 4K TVs. Hard to believe there are those who would actually fork over $3000+ for a TV and then only be willing to pay $100 for a content delivery system for it.

One could say that so is throwing money away on an expensive TV that will be half the price in a year...without watching any native content on it.

Sony is counting on suckers...I mean "consumers" like you who are willing to pay their price of admission..

I bought this tv because it upscales awesum, 1080p and 3d look fantastic, and, oh yea, eventually WHEN 4k becomes mainstream, I will be able to enjoy that TOO..

I got my X1 for FREE when I bought the TV, and that was all it was worth. I got see how "real" 4k looked, and, even though it was nice, it wasn't the ONLY reason I bought a top of the line TV. After a few months of watching 4k mini clips, and rehashed old movies "re engineered" to 4k, I sold it on Ebay for 450 bucks, so for me, it was a good deal. But would I be stupid, and pay 500 bucks to watch 1 or 2 programs from Netflix for that ridiculous price? Sorry, not that rich or stupid..

X10 would have been worth the price of admission if it had all other apps other than just Netflix & Sony Unlimited 4k. After having gone through the fiasco of X1 where audio doesn't work properly there is no way I am shelling out that kind of cash for a media player with limited apps & no guarantee that it will be supported through firmware upgrades. I would rather wait for a media streamer from third party vendor's such as Roku, WD or Apple.

My order from Sony went from a 7/16 ship date to back-ordered as of yesterday. I'll be fairly irritated if retailers get stock in before Sony fills orders from customers who pre-ordered directly from them.

Unrelated note: popped in a rented Raid 2 DVD (not Blu-Ray) last night and was really impressed with the upscaling of 480p content. Movie looked sharp as hell.

That was my fear ordering from Sony. I know Amazon will have it the day it actually is going to ship. I still think an updated ps4 is right around the corner with HEVC.

X10 info...

Found some docs on the X10 in the support section of Sony.com. Appears an external drive up to 4TB can be plugged into back of unit. Looking at back of unit it says 5V- 500ma so I don't know if it will power a non AC external drive? It also says that personal (non copyright) videos can be put on external drive or you can move videos downloaded from Video unlimited to an external drive.. Supported formats are H264 & H265... Front USB port is for plugging in Thumb drives obviously...
Wish one of you would get one of these in short order so I know whether to keep my preorder or cancel .

And each filter for each company is slightly different (THX blue glasses, DVE filter, S&M filter etc) so you won't even get the same results when using different discs, even if you are using the same set of eyes (as flinch has proved).
Sorry to belabor the point, but I have one last observation to report. I ran a test this morning using three of my go-to test disks, all of which have a blue-filter method of setting color and tint. I have S&M ver 2, the AVS HD709 (which I use for the CalMan calibration test screens), and the DVE HD Basics Blu-ray. I didn't bother with Disney WOW.

Now that I am using the most appropriate blue-filter with S&M (3x), I get the same results with all three disks, i.e. 54 for Color, and 0 for Tint. So this test was using the same equipment, and the same set of eyes, same lighting conditions, etc.

Not to pick on Flinch, I am still wondering why his results are so different. Regardless, I have beat this to death, and I apologize if I have appeared obsessive to any of you. Ultimately, we are all in search of the same thing--optimum performance from our displays.

Hopefully you will find some value from my passive glasses shoot out, even though we use different settings. I have already discovered some very interesting nuances, but all of the models aren't in yet.

In any case, I looked into the Darblet because of your mention, so *I* am the one that owes you.

Really, ridiculing people on AVS who are willing to pay for access to the highest quality content available?

I'm not getting it for Netflix or for streaming at all. I'm interested in the 4K Unlimited service as well as being able to play personal 4K videos that I can download (that currently only the 900B can do). If you don't think it worth it, fine, but to get all emotional about it as to resort to name calling, that's a little over the top.

I think playback via USB will be an update later in the year.

"Storage of personal 4K videos available starting winter 2014"

I agree that $499 is nothing when most spent over $4500 for these sets for 4k content that was non-existent at the time.

not ridiculing, just stating fact

most of us "early adopters" all feel the same way about this, but hey, anyone who wants to spend the money, after many of us who were burned big time by sony and their "media player" warn you about it, are free to do so..

And I promise not to say "I told you so"..

According to this support page on the fmp-x10 it plays 4k from a USB as long as it is not copyright protected.

I would actually think you would be crazy to not buy it now while it is $200 cheaper and could return it. Buy from somewhere like amazon so the return process is easy. I would hate to hold out and pay $200 extra just a few weeks later. Granted you could probably still get it cheaper, but still.

No need to apologise for being obsessive- If it wasn't for the you and the likes of Geoff D and flinch continuing to debate settings and working to try to get the best performance possible. We wouldn't be able to learn or understand anything. I am sure everyone here who continues to use either of your settings respect the hard work you guys put in to continue experimenting for the benefit of others as well as yourselves.

I got one, too. Sony is "preparing to ship" it tomorrow, 7/16, via "Express." That's a change from the back-ordered status it briefly went to earlier. We'll see.

Hi AVS Forum Guru,

I recently purchased the XBR-65X900A and the TV is calibrated with Austin Jerry settings (Thank you so much!!!). I did alot of research and read tons of review how to get the best picture possible. I have couple questions that I couldn't find any on the internet.

1) How do the X-Reality upscaling technology works? Is there a setting I need to set to show upscaling? Currently watching HD Channels from my cable shows no differences and/or less quality than my Samsung TV UN46C9000. It's not the quality I expected from a high end tv, it's pretty disappointing to me.

I even try it on PS4 (watching 3D avatar) and my computer and show no difference. I can't seem to get any higher resolution than 1080.

(I upgraded all my cables to HDMI high speed)

2) I'm thinking about buying the Oppo BDP-103 blu ray player to source my other devices such as my PS4 and computer using their upscale technology. Can this be done or am I wasting my money? (I know the blu ray works great)

Thanks in Advance,

SK
