Time of chat: 8/22/2013 12:06:34 PM
Length of chat: 01:32:07
Your name: Muad Dib
Chatted with: Louis
12:06 PM Louis: Hello Muad Dib. Welcome to LG Electronics U.S.A. Support only. How may I provide you with excellent service today?
12:06 PM Muad Dib: Hello. Tech question on the 55LA6900.
12:08 PM Muad Dib: Will it passthrough Digital 5.1 audio to it Digital Optical Output from an STB or DVD player that is connected using HDMI?
12:08 PM Louis: I would be happy to help you with that.
12:10 PM Louis: I'm checking one moment
12:15 PM Louis: An optical or HDMI cable is required in order to get Dolby Digital 5.1 channel audio. LG Televesions do not have a default dolby digital output setting. Most LG units output PCM, AC3 audio by default, meaning they do not support 5.1 channel pass thur. However, some LG models (SMART TV) have the option to change the digital audio output format.
12:15 PM Louis: go to your TV home or menu > set up > audio and check if you can change the audio output or what you can do is
12:16 PM Louis: You can connect the optical cable directly to the home theater system from the output device, by passing the tv all together.
12:16 PM Louis: change the audio setting from PCM to AC3
12:21 PM Muad Dib: I asked about the 55LA6900, which is a SMART TV so lets focus on the specs for that model. I can turn the optical output ON/OFF which disables the internal speakers. If I play anything HD from the internet (Netflix) I get Digital 5.1 audio. If I play anything HD from the STB or DVD player I get PCM. Is there another setting not listed/described for the 55LA6900 to get Digital 5.1 from HDMI connected devices?
12:26 PM Muad Dib: Anything?
12:26 PM Louis: thanks for holding, like explained before is up to the TV some comes with it and some doesn't.
12:26 PM Louis: go to your TV menu/home > sound > sound setting and check if you have the option that saids digital sound out
12:26 PM Louis: choose auto, PCM , etc. Try with all those setting.
12:27 PM Louis: if it doesn't have that option tell me so I can provide you what you can do.
12:27 PM Muad Dib: Hold Please.
12:29 PM Muad Dib: There is a DIGITAL SOUND OUT option with AUTO or PCM as the only options.
12:29 PM Louis: ok
12:29 PM Louis: choose auto .
12:29 PM Louis: and check if it works,
12:29 PM Muad Dib: I have it set to AUTO.
12:30 PM Louis: power reset the tv
12:30 PM Louis: Unplug the unit and when it is unplugged press and hold the start button for 30 seconds then plug back in and try again.
12:30 PM Muad Dib: Hold please
12:30 PM Louis: if problem persist reverse the HDMI cable the part that connects to the tv connect it to the other device also make sure that device is sending 5.1 signal to the tv so the tv can send 5.1 to the other unit
12:34 PM Muad Dib: Power Reset - no change.
12:36 PM Muad Dib: Both devices (STB and DVD Player are sending 5.1 when connected to the AVR using optical.
At that point the Chat Session was terminated by Louis.
This is such an obvious question that LG and its CSRs should have the answer plainly posted/available on their website if not included in the Owners manual. But all I got from the CSR was "Here try this..."
I honestly don't thinks it will output 5.1 from HDMI inputs due to copy protection laws but apparently some people think it will. BUT LG DOES NOT KNOW!
That was what was irritating me. It is a simple and obvious question.
