We're remodeling and we're having some shelves built next to the fireplace and we'll need a display. The shelves are around 45 inches wide by 12 inches deep. I'm not sure just how big we can go with those dimensions, it'll be the width that is the limiting factor.

There will be an arm that holds the display in and can be swung out for viewing. I've been away from these forums for a while so I haven't kept up with the latest technologies. It will be in a room with indirect sunlight from a window and french doors so assume an LCD would be preferable to Plasma which we use for our "main" movie viewing.

advice appreciated.

39" or 40" LED set should fit easily just goggle either one ex: "40 LED TV "

You can probably go up to maybe ~ 42 maybe even 46" inch led without the stand most led are maybe only 3 - 9 inches depth
check the sets and websites get the measurements

Hires Music formats ..............."Why does it sound like a CD ?" ............. can we make it louder "?

Sets are sold by diagonal screen measurement. Overall width is usually significantly less than diagonal screen measurement with today's narrow bezels so most 46-47" sets will fit. Your biggest problem may be finding a mount that will extend out far enough for your purposes.
