I'm looking for a decent reasonably inexpensive (<$1000) 2nd set and see that both the E50 series and E60 series are available direct from Panasonic. I assume the E50 series is last years and E60 is the 2013 series. I also see that the E50 had the IPS panel and the E60 does not.

How big of a difference is this for everyday TV viewing and moderate gaming. I have a Panasonic plasma for critical viewing. Would I be better off getting last years 47" IPS rather than ths years model 50" model despite last years being more expensive if I buy direct (and even more so using my employers discount)?

No experience with the E50 but I've had the TC-L42E60 for about a week and one thing I can say is the optical viewing angle is limited, much more so than the Samsung it replaced. It's for a bedroom set so this really doesn't effect me as I'm always watching it dead center but in a room with multiple sitting positions once outside of the width of the TV the picture and color detail starts to soften and gets washed out quick.

Between the two unless you're setting in front of the screen I'd go for the E50 with the IPS panel which get's good marks for it's wider viewing angle.

Thanks - was the Samsung that the TC-L42E60 replaced an IPS panel or are your thoughts about IPS panels based on another set or is it general knowledge that IPS panels are that much better?

Maybe that's why the TC-L50E60 and TC-L58E60 are heavily discounted at Panasonic's store...

I don't think the Samsung had one, I just know what I've read about IPS Panels and they generally get better than average feedback with viewing angles. Whatever the Samsung had in it, it was an awesome set before it starting going south and needed replacing but it should have been, I paid over twice as much for it in a 40" screen.

I don't know the reason for the current discounts on it at the moment. I was mainly looking at Vizio due to my budget and ran across the 42E60 at Amazon around the same price, read what little I could find on it and I decided to give it a shot. The apps are nice and allowed me to get rid of my Roku box. Colors were horrible out of the box pushing blues but once I searched for some settings and tweaked it looks great.

Overall I'm happy with the set for current price but closer to retail I think their are better options.

The E60 non-3D uses a VA panel similar to the ones employed by Samsung/Sharp. I believe that AUOptronics provides the display.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Between the feedback and other research it became clear to me that I wasn't going to happy with a non-IPS panel so I was leaning toward the 2012 TC-L47E50 despite it being more expensive at the Pansonic store. But when I saw it on Amazon even cheaper than the non-IPS 2013 TC-L50E60 I went for it.

The 2012 model may have fewer bells & whistles but with an IPS panel and free Amazon Prime shipping I think I'll be very happy.
