I've got a KDL-55HX820 powers up, starts up, it displays screen/ image then turns of after 5 sec, (top screen appears slight darker and at the bottom only in middle, (might be LED backlight problem)

RED power light blinks 4 times.

AUSTRALIAN KDL BLINK CODES :
4 times - Malfunction of 5V line (Voltage Supply to FE, etc)

anybody had same similar issues ?

below is image from service manual for hx920.

My 46HX820 died after a year and a half the same way, 4 blinks. Can not be fixed they said, it's the panel. Sony no longer has the part so I am up the creek. I have the extended warranty so they refunded the price I paid for the TV. The way it works is if you buy the TV at a great price, that's what they will reimburse you. So if the replacement is more you are out of luck. You just get money, not enough for a new set but money.
I am looking at a Samsung UN46F800.

Re. Machead47's experience with his/her KDL46HX820, I can "ditto" that. My panel failed 3 months out of the one year, manuf's. warranty. (Awful surprise!). Sony's customer service has offered me a refurbished replacement/comparable TV for $579. Am weighing things, now ... risk another failure from the HX release they might offer me, ask if they would permit my trading up to a KDL47W802? (an offer I think I'd accept - depending on my required cash outlay) or, get ready to start shopping and in the process evaluate a different brand. Guidance on how to best interface with Sony's customer service would really be appreciated. Thanks! BTW, "Hello, out there. I'm new and this's my first post.

Before I called the extended warranty company (service.net) I called Sony. The best they would do was 15% discount. The current model(47W802a) is not even close to the 820's specs. I talked to a Sony rep at Best Buy (he happened to be there at the time) and he told me that the W802a was an excellent set but Sony is cutting back on costs so therefore no frills there. He admitted that the 820 was far superior to the W802a. I have looked at the Samsung UN46F7500 and the UN46F800. Both excellent values and picture quality is superb.

PS When the say comparable watch out.

Thank you, Machead47. Sad to hear about the spec's difference between the two models - it sure adds up that Sony might be cutting back to curtail costs. Customer. Svc. offered the W802 and free shipping plus $800.00 from me, which I reluctantly accepted. The replacement has not arrived yet; but now, more than before, I've got my fingers crossed that the Marantz SR7005 tuner-amplifier I use will "polish"/enhance the 802W's display, audio ... something in its performance(!). One thing's certain: I'll never again regard Sony in the same light. Again, good of you to reply - it's really appreciated. I'd be interested learning of your alternate choice and satisfaction with it. Best of luck!

Hi bada2445, let me know how the W802a works out. Still waiting for my check from service.net. Like you my equipment is high end and not sure I want to go that route again. Looking at Vizio M501dA2R, JUST LOOKING. I run all my video direct to the TV. I have a Marantz SR9300 (175W X7) no HDMI and a DV9600. The DV9600 does an excellent job of up converting via HDMI to 1080. It makes REMASTERED SD video look like Blu Ray. I have a sony blu ray player also amoung my other older technology players. Believe it or not I have a Pioneer Laser Disc player and a Pioneer VSX 9900S receiver. Both are in excellent working condition. It seams that as technology goes foreword the quality goes down.

Hi All, I had the exact same issue. After 1 year and a few months, my 46HX820 died: after a few minutes, the display fades out to black and the red light blinks 4 times.
I contacted Sony who redirected me to thei repairer. They came back to me saying the panel was dead and the cost of the new part + labour is almost the purchase price of the TV.
I contacted Sony and asked them to cover the repair cost even though the TV was out of warranty, which they accepted. I am quite happy with the way Sony handled this.
Now the repairer is waiting for the ordered panel to be delivered.
The only thing I am worried about is if they will replace with a panel with the same performances as the original one. They told me the part number is A183266B but I can't figure out for sure if it is the original HX820 panel.
Does one of you know? Is there any information about this in the Service Manual?
Thanks for your help.

Hello, we have the same problem. TV 18 months old.

We have a Sony KDL-55EX720. When the TV is turned on, it display the screen for few seconds and them it automatically Turn Off and give a signal of 4 red light blinks. This is suppose to be a backlight inverter failure. We requested Sony Part 147430211 (DPS-78 CH 1-883-933-11) G8 Converter/inverter and replaced it. But the TV Still give the same message. What can you recommend us to do, desides taking it to a repair shop?

Is there a class action filed for this? There were a bunch for the XBR models, see https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/sony-class-action-lawsuits

I've had exactly the same problem with my KDL46HX720. Turns off after 5 secs with 4 blinking lights. Part of screen goes dim before turn off. Has anyone been able to verify definitively if it's the inverter or the panel? Looks like inverter can be replaced, but not the panel.

Out of warranty help

How did you get Sony to cover the repair cost even though the TV was out of warranty?
