I've been using an old Panasonic 32lz800 for the past few years as my monitor. Then I got the bright idea of trying out some of the newer IPS monitors to see about any new improvements. I bought an HP 27xi with AH-IPS display. Man was that a mistake. Even looking straight on and not at an angle, any dark or black colors would have a neonish white glow that ruined them. It's worse off-angle. Plenty of youtube videos later (apparently showing off viewing angles of monitors is a trend), and apparently all of the IPS monitors, even the expensive ones, have this white glow. It's not back light bleeding. It moves around when you change the angle, and is still there when straight on. IPS smartphones also exhibit it to a certain degree. However, when I look at HDTV displays, from the ones I own and the ones at the TV wall at my local Best Buy, none of them have this obnoxious glow.

The only thing I can think of, and is mentioned here and there without much support, is IPS glow. Supposedly older IPS monitors had this thing called an A-TW Polarizer that significantly mitigated the issue, but only for high end and expensive IPS monitors. They don't make them anymore. If it was expensive, it wouldn't make sense that all HDTVs, even cheap Vizio ones, have this polarizer, since they don't exhibit the glow that monitors do. So I am not sure if the problem is IPS glow at all.

So what do you think the problem is? I'm not really sure about the technological differences between HDTVs, computer monitors, and smartphone displays. HDTVs look very different to me than the latter two. Without a good way to determine what the fundamental differences I'm seeing are, I'll probably have to stick to buying HDTVs to use as a monitor.
