I would go with the Spears and Munsil HD Benchmark 2nd Edition for the calibration disk. It supports 3D calibration as well so you can adjust your 3D for best viewing too.

The Mohu Leaf gets some excellent reviews and it's made in U.S.A.

Agreed, I bought a Leaf with the amp, best reception I ever had, you have to use the cable provided, tried using my own and it didn't get as many channels.

Good choice for adjusting your tv settings. It won't calibrate your tv without the use of meters but you can really improve the pq by making some fairly accurate picture adjustments.

Oh, and just screw the coax cable into the back of the TV. Set it to "antenna" on the TV menu and run a channel search.
You'll probably like what you see and won't have to worry about weather if that's ever been an issue with your directv reception.

I really love this tv, my only complaint would be watching darker scenes in darker surroundings. The light flashing and shadowing is horrible, and from what I gather through some of the info here, this is inherent on edge-lit sets. I have the backlight dialed down to 40 too. I guess it's just something we all have to deal with, still don't regret getting this tv, it's awesome!

About to order the 54" 5.1 system to pair it as well, I noticed on amazon it should ship in 3-6 weeks.....

Anyone else having issues with the TV freezing in the off state? Several times in the last week, I've been unable to turn on the tv with the remote and had to unplug the power and plug it back in. This isn't easy when it's wall mounted. frown.gif

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

It might be trying to download firmware. If so, unplugging could brick the TV.

I've let it sit for hours afterwards, and it never becomes responsive until I unplug and plug it back in. Also, afaik, I'm on the latest firmware (the one with the wifi remote).

FYI: New Firmware V1.09.44.0090 for the TV (which my TV asked to download on 2/13/2014) may break functionality of the rear multi-purpose button when used to turn on the TV. The following has been my experience for the 2013 version of the M801D-A3 with the newest firmware:

I previously used the rear multi-purpose button to turn on and off the set. You do this by holding in the button for about 5 seconds. After the firmware installs, I was presented with an activation screen for the remote pairing. Once the remote is successfully paired, the TV "forgets" it was paired when the rear multi-purpose button is used to turn on the set. If I use the rear button, I am presented with the pairing screen again. I cannot bypass the pairing screen. Therefore, the use of the rear button to turn on the set is essentially lost. I've done a factory reset and the problem persists with the rear multi-purpose button and remote activation screen.

Using the remote to turn on the screen works fine and this potential bug only affects the use of the rear multi-purpose button to turn on the set.

With the new firmware, I have also had reliability issues with the "Menu" button on the original remote even after the remote is paired. You can see that in the video at about the 4min 30 sec mark. The "Menu" button continues to work fine on my Harmony remote. However, the original remote does not trigger the "Menu" function on the TV reliably when I use the rear button to turn on the set and go through the pairing process again.

I opened a case with Vizio on 2/17/14.

UPDATE:
On Tue, Feb 18, 2014 at 4:58 PM, Kali Lewis wrote:
Our engineering department has reviewed your video and case. The TV is designed to go into the remote setup when you press and the hold the power button (as you did in the video) until the VIZIO splash screen appears on the TV. To turn the TV on you do not need to hold it down, you just need to press it in once.

If you have any questions please contact Customer Support at 1-877-878-4946 or online at chat.vizio.com.

Thanks and have a great day!

_______________
Good outcome. However, for the record this is not how the TV previously operated prior to the most recent firmware update. I was previously required to hold down the power button to power on the TV. Also the Remote Initialization screen never came up previously when holding down the rear button. This is even stated on Page 47 of the instruction manual: "Press the Power button on the remote or hold the Power control on the side of the TV to turn it on."

Is anyone else still waiting on the new firmware? (Purchased in 12/2013)

Even with a non-traditional push roll-out, it seems like everyone should have it by now.

When I almost lost hope that it will never happen, it actually happened. You can't miss it or get rid of it, your TV will upgrade. Mine was registered back in Oct 2013 and I got mine updated last week. Only suggestion is have your TV connected preferably through a ethernet cable rather unless your WiFi connection is very reliable.

They are all required... just like you need CMY and K to make a good picture.

So you are saying everything about a TV has same importance? if people were to rank the importance of different aspects of a HDTV I believe most people would vote for quality of picture to be at the top and remote functionality somewhere close to the bottom. Yes, the remote is a bit of an annoyance and it has been this way for quite some time now, hard to imagine all those that are buying now don't do enough research before spending their 4K to not know about the remote issue.

Of course not, and your inference is silly and not at all what any reasonable person would get from what I stated. As for "remote is an annoyance," turning the TV on and off doesn't really rate as "an annoyance" issue in my book. As for apologizing for crappy service (the impetus for my contacting customer service was to address a FLAW in the product functionality), regardless of WHAT was wrong (remote), crappy service is never appropriate.

(Now looking for Ignore User feature.) ,,, and done.

Does this HDTV have a closed captionings (CCs) toggle on/off button on its RC? Going through its menu is annoying. frown.gif

Also, I noticed it has the latest firmware, v1.09... Yay! It made me laugh that I can use HDTV without aiming to the bottom left corner with its RC. I can even do it in the opposite direction!! Funny. biggrin.gif

Actually the New 2014 Model is the M801i-D3, not the M801D-A3. Only the M801i is Full array I believe.

I would like to avoid that but the lack of 3D in the 2014's make them a no go for me.

I do not think the M801i is part of the new 2014 line up. I think it is a continuation of the 2013 series. You have to wait a little longer for the true 2014 series. The M801i is lacking FLAD, comes with the same wifi remote and 3D so it looks as if it's the same as the M801d minus 3D is all. And the 1i designation was used for 2013 sets as well, so all signs point to this is still a "current gen" model.

Anybody have any input regarding the quality of this set compared to Sharp? I have a Sharp 80" LC-80LE857U which is being returned (dead pixels).. actually my second one as the first one had issues, as well as pretty bad clouding. This M801D-A3 looks promising based on the threads I've been reading. I've never owned a Vizio as I thought they were a lower-end TV, but from what I've been reading they seem to be a good contender nowadays.

I don't use any of the smart apps - I just use it in my living room with a HTPC and Xbox One/Cable TV.. and the occasional blu-ray movie.

Any thoughts?
