I ordered a new 43" TCL LCD TV from Amazon and received it yesterday. After turning it on, I noticed a sort of "ripple" effect in the top right and on the right hand side of the TV. It's very noticeable when a solid color is on the screen. When watching a movie, it's less noticeable, but I can still see the distorted "ripple" much of the time. Here's a pic:

This is the first LCD TV I've purchased, so while I'm assuming this is not normal, I'm not 100% sure. What do you think, should I try to see if Amazon will allow me to exchange it for a new one?

Such effects are typical when that portion of the screen has had pressure applied to it, or on very cheap panels. If you're within the first 30 days, go ahead and exchange it.

I don't know if it's a cheap panel or not, it's this TV from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/TCL-LE43FHDF3300-43-Inch-Limited-Warranty/dp/B0085BFB5A/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Is there a name for this type of defect?

That is unacceptable. Return it and leave TCL in the dust. They are not a very good manufacturer. For that price range id go to bestbuy and look at the insignia/dynex sets. They have always been impressive for the money and get great reviews.

^^^^ out of those, I'd consider the Vizio your last choice.

Thanks for the suggestions, but my budget is actually $350 (Amazon price matched the TCL with Sam's Club, so I got it for $348).

I guess I'll go ahead and contact Amazon tonight or tomorrow and ask about an exchange. I've never had to exchange something with Amazon before, so hopefully they're good about stuff like this smile.gif

Amazon is pretty good about returns and exchanges. It will be easier though if you kept all of the original packing materials and box.
