First time post so hopefully this is in the right spot.

So i got a new tv from Amazon (Sony KDL40R450A) and for some reason things that shouldnt be red are very red (e.g. http://imgur.com/a/REdMX). I am wondering if this could be a defect since none of the reviews of this tv that i have seen mention this, they all say the picture quality is quite good. i assume that since this is a very obvious issue that if it were normal then most if not all of the reviews would mention it. Anyways, i am wondering what could cause this and if i get it replaced should the new one be better? i have searched and couldn't come up with an answer, i wasn't really sure what i should have searched for.

Thanks

When I saw the r550a in the store it looked exactly like that, so im not sure if its a defect.

k, well if thats the case ill probably return it and get something else which is too bad since i love everything else about this TV. Can anyone else confirm that this is normal for this tv and maybe recommend another one 40-42" and ideally under $500.

Have you adjusted the settings or is this the way it came out of the box?

Young One 07-22-2013 06:58 PM

Both, i tried the "standard" preset picture mode as well as my custom one and they are both like that.

Grab the free AVS HD709 disk and see if adjusting the basic settings improve the pq. If not, send it back.

I agree with Otto.

I actually did this, and it thats where it's at now. I was hoping to find out whether a replacement would look better than this or if i should get something else. I'd rather not get a replacement only to find out that it is the same way and have to send that one back as well. perhaps ill ask some of the Amazon reviewers to see if they have the same problem. But as i said before, none of them (or any other review this i read) mentioned this problem.

Take Amazon reviewers, or any online review, with a grain of salt because you don't really know what the motivation is behind the reviews. I have a tendency to give more weight to the reviews here than anyplace else. Online reviews are a good place to start but I wouldn't depend on them entirely.

Yea, i figured ~50 reviews not saying anything bad about the display would be good enough. Not only that but i find it hard to believe that something this bad is normal for a TV, it doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.

What do you have live color set to? Even on low, it really exaggerates colors.

Young One 07-23-2013 03:41 PM

Oddly enough when I played with live color, turning it on helped with this issue but, just like you said, exaggerated the colors and made everything else look worse.

I didn't notice this on the KDL-40R450A I had for a few days, or on its bigger brother the KDL-46R453A that I replaced it with.

To get more feedback from owners of this TV, you might want to post in the Sony BRAVIA KDL-40R450A thread.

k thanks, DLiquid, I'll see what they say.
