Nismoblack, now that you got the settings fixed are you completely happy with the set? Will you be keeping it? Also, would someone please take pictures of their settings and post them after they have calibrated it?

i sit about 8 to 10 feet away and there is a difference in PQ. the picture looks incredibly sharp and the blacks are inky. IMO its worth the extra 1k. I have no clouding or "flash lighting" in the corners even on 3D when the backlight is pushed to max. Its an expensive tv, but for an edgelit LED, its the best I've seen in performance. The 55" however, does leak light from the sides and the passive 3D is cut in half to 540p in each eye, where as the 65" X9 does full HD 1080p per eye, just like an active set would.

I saw this tv in BB yesterday and its a beautiful tv. The curve makes it sexy, BUT, i did see some banding and flashlighting on the display model. The new Samsung curved tv also had some color banding that i saw, so i think its just the nature of the curved panel which is still young and in its first stage. Still impressive nontheless.

I'm now completely happy with my set and plan on keeping it. I'll trying and post up my settings once I'm done calibrating for sure. Though the settings Mr. Biggles posted look pretty similar to mine overall, despite a few small changes like color temp. that are more personal preferences

Just for kicks and giggles I tried to put a code of 65X900 yesterday on the 4K set but it did nothing.

I finally did some calibrating with the WOW disk on the different modes. Looks great - very pleased with the results, will post pics soon.

Two downsides I notice during calibration:
1) Minor image inconsistency, probably due to backlighting. Only noticeable during critical viewing of a solid white or color screens - doesn't stand out. Mostly invisible during normal content.
2) Worse is the flashlighting during black screens with content. The "LED Control" option fixes this 100% during completely black scenes, like fades to black. However, black screens with content, such as credits, the flashlighting is still visible even with LED Control turned on, albeit much improved.

I guess there's no "perfect TV" - this set's flaw seems to be less-than-ideal LED backlighting. #1 above is a non-issue for me, #2 is somewhat disappointing. Fortunately the flaws are all but hidden during most viewing content, so hopefully watching TV, movies, and playing games I'll focus on the great black levels, colors, image detail and excellent input lag.

Watched American Idol tonight and I felt very pleased with how the set looked calibrated. So I snapped some pics with the iPhone, but as mentioned earlier in the thread, taking digital photos of a digital screen leaves a lot to be desired. redface.gif I might need to set up the wife's Canon SLR and a tripod to see if I can get better representation.

I'll post a couple of the iPhone pics anyway, but I feel the TV looks much better in person then what these represent:

Commercial for new Spidey during American Idol (1080i) - colors popped off the screen:

Also, commercial for upcoming 24 mini-series (1080i) - I thought the skin tone looked good:

From the Disney WOW Blu-ray stress test (1080p)

Also from WOW stress test (1080p), the skin tone/color check slide. You can see a bit of the uniformity issue in the blue background:

PS4 Zen Pinball 2 (1080p)

PS4 Strider demo (1080p)

Can anyone who mounted this on the wall take some side profile pictures for me? I am about to buy this but it seem much thicker than the Samsung ( I know its 1k more) and because of the position of my wall you will see the profile.

Thanks!

Thanks for the pics DaverJ. Did your settings end up being close to Mr. Biggles'? Also I'm guessing the camera exaggerates the uniformity issue in the picture with the blue background, can you confirm it isn't that bad during normal viewing?

Rastargate, I hope to have mine wall mounted on Tuesday after it arrives, I'll post a pic for you then if nobody else has by then.

Yeah, the camera exaggerates the flaws. The uniformity issue is there and somewhat noticeable on solid white/color screens if you look for it.

I keep changing settings every time I watch, but at some point I'll settle down and stick with what works best for me.

DaverJ,

All are off but the light sensor and auto shut off. Went back and forth with the light sensor, but in the end left it on.

Today I tried the settings from Sound & Vision for the KDL-55W900A, which for the most part is very similar to the S990A display. They remind me of my professionally calibrated plasma. Just like on my plasma, at first they don't 'pop', but they look much more natural. Also, it seems like the color saturation is still there.

I'm curious what others think.

I'll give them a try tonight, but with a backlight setting of "2", I have a feeling I won't stick with these settings. I like a natural look, but gotta admit I'll sacrifice some natural to get some "pop".

I hope I don't get my AVS account revoked for that last comment. biggrin.gif

smile.gif Yes, that is akin to blasphemy around here. But at '2' I'm very surprised how it looks. I am curious what you think ultimately.

Here is the update on my replacement S990A after the first one had the brown line in the lower center of the set..This one is teriffic! No brown line and the flashlighting is next to none. Black levels are some of the best I have seen from an LED LCD and the Tri-Luminos really makes a difference from the R550A. I have included 2 pics from the first S990A with the problem of the brown line and the build date on that set was November of 2013 as is the new set I have now is also from November 2013 so im thinking it was just a bad panel. Also something to think about is the delivery company that makes the delivery to you when they call to set the appt ask them if they can make your delivery the first stop so the set is not "bouncing around" in the truck all day and also not sitting in too hot or too cold of a climate for an extended period of time. The delivery guy on this second set said I was his first delivery of the morning and he had about 5 other stops to make including 3 in Manhattan! Im glad I got the set before he took my TV on a ride on the potholes of Manhattan! lol..And finally I have to say Sony Customer support was outstanding in doing the exchanges very understanding of the problem and looked to correct the situation as quick as possible. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Gave those settings a shot, and was surprised to find out those are almost identical to my custom settings! Mine are a tad brighter with just a touch more color, but very slightly. Almost unnoticeable difference.

Don't have mine wall mounted, but I know it can be. And I have now had both the S990 and the W850. W850 picture is better. I am returning my S990. Not happy with it at all.

Don't know if has been mentioned yet. If you would like to see reviews on this t.v., I was
able to find some. I searched for the European model....65s995a. A few were very detailed
and thorough, unlike CNET and others for the 990a. This one being the most informative.

Convinced me to purchase one. Hope this helps.

Thoughts? Make any improvements?

The image appears to gain resolution/clarity without any type of induced artifacts as stated in the article. And that seems to give it more depth.
