I had an 52 inch xbr9 that really didn't have any banding. I really do think this has become a common problem in the newer sets.
The LCD's I have are between one and six years old, and go from an old and small Samsung LN-52A650A to a Sharp Pro-70x5fd that is 5 inches larger than the 65w850a. Uniformity is an issue with this set. Other than that, the picture is good, so get this TV if you don't mind the lack of uniformity. I also did the frozen towel trick on the edges, and that did not improve the TV at all.

CNET's setting for Sony W900A, has both the Power Saving and Scene Select Sync set to Off. If that means anything.

On Sony's website it describes Scene Select Sync as:

"Scene Select Sync is a function that enables the television to automatically adjust the backlight control according to the selected Scene Select setting. This function will allow you to save power when using the TV."

Can you elaborate on the frozen towel trick? I have read others mention this as well but cannot find specific instructions.

For me though, my viewing environment is in a darker room therefore I need to make compromise's to minimize the some of the short comings. Namely the brighter sides on an darker scenes. These features , along with the brightness control make in impact on this, as do other things like motion flow settings that can dim the picture depending on what setting.

On thing about CNET and settings from other review sites is that sometimes I think they just turn this type of stuff off because they assume it will make things worse and don't even attempt to evaluate it. Likewise, I doubt they spend real critical time with the display to notice or be affected by the short comings enough so to make other adjustments. I know in the Sound and Vision review of this TV, the have the brightness set at 51. If I set it like this on my set, it has a very noticeable negative impact on my display. The sides are real bright get a red tint to them in dark scenes. I'm sure my set isn't the only one that behaves like this.

No display is perfect and for me because of this, sometimes a display dialed in with the test patterns ( such as brightness ) doesn't necessarily translate to a picture I want to sit down and watch.

Also, below is a link regarding the AVS HD 709 calibration patterns that you can use. The instructions are pretty straight forward on how to burn a disc or whatnot and I'm starting to use this again over the WOW disc as it is more robust.

Thanks for the links. I actually hooked my macbook via its HDMI into the TV and you can set the desktop to different shades of gray. I took these pics. I'll have to take some tonight when it isn't so bright. I didn't see any banding in these grey screens. I just only see it when watching baseball but it's pretty minor.

You need a darker gray screen to see the banding. I can barely see it in those pics.

Regarding the Scene Select Sync mode. I have seen and owned dozens of TV's in my 66 years and the last 4 were Sony's. This 65w850a is the first set where the Scene Select Sync mode actually worked like I thought it should. Using Vivid, cool, BL AND PIC to Max, Color temp to Cool, Bright to 48 and COLOR to 30 (yep, 30), I am seeing the best blacks I've ever seen in a edge lit LED display. I always turn off Power Save but this is the first time I've turned on SSS. Maybe it's the X-Reality Pro because I had someone with the 70w850b try these settings and all he could say was WOW.

I agree. Next to the W900A (Which I proudly own) the W850A is simply one of the best TV's ever made by Sony. 2013 gave us the W900A and the W850A and look at what Sony has offered this year.....Wedge shaped monstrosities! Instead of following up on the success of both of these TV's they drop the ball and only put the best in the 4K sets. How sad and what a bunch of BS if you ask me.

I couldn't agree more. During the latest news flash from Sony they stated that they will be heavily promoting 4K. Probably makes sense because I doubt you will see anything 2K over 50 inches in 2016. I have no problem with that as long as they are affordable.

I know the w850b is a step down from the w850a, how does the w950b compare? There is a w950b,right?

W850b is a 60in set. I purchased and returned after a couple of days to get the upgrade in size with the 850a. The wedge design was horrible, you couldn't notice it if it was mounted on the wall but I had it on a stand and it appeared the screen slanted backwards because of the design.

Definitely. Even DirecTV is alright, but switch to Amazon Prime for HD shows and wow.. just wow.

Decided to do the scene sync and it did help some with my dark scenes. However Netflix will not launch at all even after turning the set off and back on.

Bigger screens and better sets are often more revealing of HD lite re-transmission faults and particular compression artifacts and noise and also make the panels dither more .

Sometimes Amazon Prime HD and Netflix HD often looks better than many Dish HD channels here as well.

Yep, there is a thread here for the 850b and it is the wedge. My current 65w850a is a replacement for a 70w850b. Quite a few have had radial banding issues with the 850b as did I. When Sony offered me another 70w850b or a very new 950 series I requested the 65w850a. Reviews on Amazon and seeing how happy folks here were convinced mei to go with the 850a.

Headed to Best Buy now to pick it up. Whitesands, thanks for sending me you settings. I look forward to getting them entered. I am also looking forward to getting my PS4 hooked up to see if the lag is really that low on this set. Does anyone have any good game settings? This tv will be in a dark theater room also. Thanks Jon

So I bought this TV and was blown away at how good the picture looks especially on vivid. The issue is that this set has terrible banding that I just can't ignore. So I called Sony and they offered to pick this one up and replace it the same day. I checked and saw that this panel is from November 2013 so hopefully I will get a newer set and there will be no issues.

The lag is really low. I play MLB 14 The show and before with my old set I was always late on pitches but with this one I have perfect timing.

Incidentally, while waiting for my TV to ship, I was reading the manual (I get bored, ok? smile.gif ) I had seen some people commenting about the white balance not changing after they do a reset. That's apparently performing as expected according to the manual.

For those that already have the set and have been looking through the apps, is there anything worth noting in there? And has anyone found a cheaper pair of the 3D glasses that work with this set? Thanks!

Snagged this at BB today PM'd from .fry's. Interesting note, this is a UMAP product and frys it seems is breaking sony's rules by selling it at $1499(not that I minded). BB had to call corporate to Ok this, but all was good.

Can anybody give me a quick link to the calibrations by the most awesome whitesands? (seeing there are 110 pages and 3359 posts) wink.gif I don't have time to play with all the settings at this time and would like to see what this tv is capable of.

I checked and saw that this panel is from November 2013 so hopefully I will get a newer set and there will be no issues.
Newer isn't necessarily better. I have a March 2014 build date and have been having issues with mine as well. Sony has decided to replace mine.
