Just ordered my w850a via the Frys deal a couple days ago, looking forward to getting it delivered soon. Hopefully I win the panel lottery, I'd hate to have to ship that beast back and it's hard to tell how many are left.

Also, I hate to jump on the bandwagon.. but WhiteSands, if you get a chance, could you PM me those famous settings of yours as well? Thanks in advance!

I am debating returning the TV over the inability to output Netflix 5.1 sound. I have spent a bit of time online and have not been able to figure out if this TV can do it in any way. I find it surprising that there are 100s of pages of discussion about picture quality, but no discussion on audio output. I am a heavy OTT user and audio is as important to me as picture - so inability to output 5.1 sound is going to be a deal breaker. Netflix has had 5.1 available for years, so this seems to be a puzzling ommission. Can anyone confirm if they can get 5.1 out, either over optical or HDMI/ARC?

Hdmi /arc does 5.1 for me

I just received this TV from ABT, who pricematched Frys minus tax, and I'm fairly happy. However, I'm definitely seeing banding when panning on solid surfaces and on screens of all one color (credits/white PC screen).

@WhiteSands , do your settings help with these issues? If so, I'd like to try them out before I accept that I may have to send the TV back.

Just picked the set up from Best Buy during their sale last week and I, and the family, are LOVING IT! Avatar in 3D absolutely floored us.

I'd love to get your settings, WhiteSands, if you'd be so kind as to PM them to me. Thanks in advance!

I am using a cheetah mount from Amazon that goes for about $28 or so. Ordered it when I bought the tv and has worked great. It's a slim mount with some tilt. I can't see why anyone would pay more. It is sturdy and I highly recommend it. When I was mounting the tv, I had questions and called cheetah support and talked to someone and they were very helpful.

On another note, WhiteSand, thank you so much for the taking your time in sharing your settings and answering my question. Very helpful and you're awesome
I finally got to test out my set with Avatar in 3D and boy was I impressed. I used WhiteSands' vivid settings and it was absolutely stunning. So far is only watching FIOS TV that I am noticing where is not so clear and have many artifacts even on HD channels. What setting are you guys using when you're watching broadcast tv?

It seems most of the w850a's bought on the 4th at frys have been returned. If Sony could fix the banding this tv would be best in its class.

I have not noticed it on mine as much lately. I know its there, but either I've kind of gotten used to it, or its tamed a bit. I'm someone who is very picky about this as well.

I will admit though I went into buying this TV with managed expectations. Uniformity issues of some sort are the nature of the beast on LCD's.

picked up one of those slim mounts from Frys, think it was roughly $40 or so, and the tv has held up nice with no problems at all.

You know, for a $1500 TV with colors that match (and in some aspects exceed) the Pioneer Elite's colors, it's a fantastic TV.

I also had received a 80QU17U from Sharp as a warranty replacement for my 70" Sharp Elite, I returned it ... why? Because for a TV that goes for $4000+, vertical banding is unacceptable, clouding in 0% and 10% grey was a problem too.

But KDL-65850A's banding is no where near as bad as on that 80QU17U, and for $1500, it's an amazing value. Get it while you can.

Yes I bought my 850a with the same expectations for the potential uniformity issues. I was going to exchange it for another (Best Buy) but ended up cancelling the exchange because I felt there were so many positives about my TV that I feared getting a replacement with similar banding and other problems as well, like clouding or flashlighting or dead pixels. My 850a is perfect in every other way so I decided to keep it. It only bugs me when I watch sports, baseball or golf these days. Network TV and blu ray are beautiful. No complaints. Maybe one of these days they will figure out how to remedy these LCD issues.

Looks like you are very lucky to have a good screen on your TV.
I called Sony today, and based on the issue i described, they decided to give me a replacement of the same model, it should arrive in 5-7 business days, then the delivery company will take the defective one.
I hope i will be lucky this time.

Thanks for the screenshots.
When you get the chance can you send me the settings you are using on this set.

Thanks.

Regardless, I'm going to wait for a little bit to see if it stops bugging me.

Looks like your display got the same issue as mine, i called Sony today (because that is where i purchased sony.com) and they decided to replace the TV.

Here the screenshots from my TV i took.

Berat, only your screen shot of the World Cup would convince me your present set has a panel problem. Hopefully the replacement set will be without problems. You won't find one of the sets with smooth uniformity on a gray screen shot. This is caused by the triluminos filters. When watching a good hdtv or blu ray signal your set should look great. Your one of the few that your set came with a defective panel showing light distortions. Enjoy your new set.

Have some other questions regarding 3D on this set. I read that the reason Netflix 3D is not supported is because the TV can't do MVC 3D, just SBS (side-by-side) and TaB (top-and-bottom).

I'll have a HTPC hooked up to the TV, and using XBMC (and possibly MPC) to send 3D content to the TV. Does anyone have experience sending HSBS or HTaB to the TV using XBMC? Can the set handle Full-SBS (I don't know if this would be a limitation of the set or the player)?

I have a HTPC hooked up to my TV. I'm not using XBMC, but I think the input video feed is basically the same.

Most 3d content I've viewed so far is HSBS. The TV does not automatically detect this 3d content, but it's easily selectable with the 3D button.

I haven't have any full-SBS content to test though.

I have the same problem with World Cup, it is very distracting.

I was wondering if they will be replacing the TV with a new set or a refurbished TV. My set needed to be replaced and they told me that they did not have anymore new ones so they offered a refund or the 2014 replacement model KDL65W950B at no additional cost. I like the black levels better on the 65w850a so I do not know what direction I will go in. I was curious if they told me the truth about not having anymore new 65W850A. Thanks.

The Sony Sales page shows the W850a is Out of Stock. That's a good thing as they may make another shipment. At least it don't show discontinued as yet.

Adjust the settings from one of the other apps -- Amazon, Hulu, Youtube, etc. Those same settings should then be used by the Netflix app.
