I was curious from people who own this TV which motion flow mode do you use? I was wondering with the motion flow clear mode is anyone getting judder or shaking of the background in the picture with slow camera pans side to side or up and down (especial on diagonal lines). Can happen with movies on cable or blu-ray. I believe it has something to do with the motion flow and 24p film rate and the TV processors ability to cope. One example of this is in Pacific Rim at time point of 26:55 to 27:05. In this scene people are walking and the background is juddering/shaking.

I am asking this because I have a Sony KDL65W850a which judders a lot in the clear mode. I like the clear mode because of the lack of the soap opera affect and the full resolution of 1080 on motion. Thanks.

I usually have mine set to off. I have played around with it set to clear, I don't care for any of the other modes. I can check for the judder on Pacific Rim later on today when I get home. I will let you know what how it looks.

TV turns on and off by itself

Hello, my son just called me at work saying the tv is turning on and off by itself. Said he did not touch the remotes.
Being away from home, I just instructed him to unplug the power, and also take the batteries out of remotes.

Has anyone else experienced the same thing ?

I haven't had that problem - but after unplugging the TV for a few minutes he should plug it back in and see if it's back to normal.

Here is one of my better scenic screen shots that I have posted in these forums over the last 8 months. This set makes a fantastic picture due to it's many Triluminos colors.

Acermen, I watched that 10 second scene over and over. With it set to clear, sometimes I could see the judder then other times I didn't notice it. So it must have something to do with how the tv processes it. Are you noticing it consistently in that scene? I was setting it to clear using cinema settings. What setting were you using?

Yes I notice the judder consistently on that scene and others. I am using standard with picture setting at 95, all noise reductions off, Motionflow clear and CineMotion on Auto. I see it a lot on movies on cable and Blu-ray.

I discovered an odd situation with my Comcast X1 cable box. I have a choice of resolutions on the box, 480, 720, 1080I, 1080P 30hz and 1080P 60 hz. When I select the 1080P 30hz the picture on the TV using clear or standard mode gets extremely jumpy like it is almost continuously pausing. Then switching to 1080P 60hz the picture does the same thing. When I go back to 1080I the picture stops the jumping/pausing mode. If I go direct from 1080I to 1080P 60hz the picture is similar to the 1080I except maybe a slight sharper (no jumping picture). It is like the motion flow circuit cannot take the 1080P 30hz signal. I know this is not normal since the previous W850A set that I had with a different problem had no problem handling the different resolutions from my Comcast X1 DVR box.

So my set appears to be defective and Sony has no more new sets to provide me so they offered me the KDL 65W950B but I am afraid I will not be happy with the black levels (TPS panel by LG known for low contrast and black levels). I saw this set in two locations and I got completely different impressions so I am concerned with going with it. The other choices are a repair or a refund but then what do I buy? The 4 K sets will cost a lot more not sure I want to go that route now with very little 4K content available. Thanks.

Just received this TV(european version 65w855a). Looks amazing so far. Also did some tests on uniformity. Gray uniformity looks ok but there are some darker places but they are really close to frame. Black uniformity is excellent.

Hey guys I just bought this TV directly from Sony a few days ago. I tweaked the picture using calibration discs and it looks great when I look at the screen directly. The problem is whenever I look at the TV from any other angle (even slightly off center), the colors look off like there's a purple hue (I thought this was an old LCD problem). Is my set defective or is this a common issue?

Edit: I'm used to Plasmas, but even my computer monitor looks great if I look at it from the left or right.

Could be settings could be he set. All LCDs have a limited cone of "visibility" where picture quality will start to drop off.

The last TV I had ( a phillips) had a small batch of TVs with that same problem. I switched out the set and the next one was fine....for five or six years.

I would switch it out if you still can as I believe it is a control board issue.

Played PS3 today for the first time with this set. Picture quality is great. TV input lag is not bad even with general scene setting with motionflow. At least I was perfectly happy to play Dark Souls 2 with general mode and motionflow in smooth setting. Motionflow really improves the 30fps titles look better almost as fluid as 60fps games. Also there is noticeable picture quality improvement from using general mode instead of "laser fast" game mode.

65 inches F... yeah!!!

Game mode in scene selection (input lag is only about 17ms with game mode)

Thanks. I'll try to figure out how i can have it automatically enable with my harmony ultimate remote, so when I hit "gaming" activity it goes on, and when I hit "watch tv" it turns off.

The more time I spend with this television, the more impressed I am. Whether exposing the poorest satellite channels, blazing through brilliant blu rays (both 2 and 3D), perfect performance connected to my HTPC, or gorgeous gaming with no perceptible lag and stunning visuals via PS4 and Xbox One... I'm so glad I stepped up to this Sony set.

I think TV should automatically go to game mode if scene selection is Auto and you have HDMI device control enabled. Then TV sees that you have gaming console. At least this works with PS3.

WhiteSands is a legend around here - his settings have contributed to hundreds of finely tuned KDL-65W850A TV's and has in my opinion - achieved the highest Atta-Boy status you can get!

I have had this set since March and this is the first time my set is not turning on either by remote or by the button on the set. I have unplugged it for more than the time needed stated in the instructions and still nothing. Does the set not turn on if overheated? Thoughts?

That's odd - I've never heard of that before. I'm retired and have had my TV on all day and it has never overheated. How long has your TV been on?
