DAMN YoungHeat! Your setup is damn impressive if I may say so! Nice and clean. And yes the W850A along with its little brother the W900A is two of the best tv's ever made by Sony still today. In fact I would take both tv's over todays hyped up sets. But thats just me.

I couldn't agree more steve1971.......I have owned my amazing 65W850A almost two years now. It has been an outstanding set!

Poking around craigslist a few days ago, I spied a lightly used 55W900A for sale in Denver.....from a smoke free, pet free home! .... Bazinga!!
I brought it home last night.........it now resides in my bedroom! :-)

First impression is...... I believe it has an image that is even more spectacular than our beloved W850A's....................score!!

Steve 1971-
As a 65W850A owner and forum member, I have had excellent results on that set with the VERY popular settings created and often shared by long standing forum member "WhiteSands"......😎

Do you know if these settings are also good for the 55W900A? Or are there other settings you can recommend for the W900A?

To be honest I dont know if WhiteSands settings would work on the W9 due to the fact that the panels used in the 2 tv's are slightly different. Such as the W9 uses a black panel and QD's and the W850A does not. But you could certainly try them, it wouldnt hurt. The settings I use on my W9 are the ones Tom Norton over at SoundAndVision.com used when he reviewed the W9. I used his settings along with a few tweaks of my own. I had a pro Calibrator look at my set and he said not to touch the settings I have dialed in because those are the settings he would have used as well. But give WS's settings a try and see if you like it because as I said before it wouldnt hurt. If you dont like those settings then try Tom Nortons because he's pretty much spot on.

I have had my 65W850A from November 1, 2014, and everything was fine until a few days ago. Unfortunately, the screen appeared the vertical red dotted line. I am very sad, the set was excellent. Does anyone know if this can be repaired or the set must be replaced?

Sadly that looks to be a panel issue and if thats the case its unfixable. Do you have a warranty on it? If so give Sony a call ASAP!

I don't know Pero77. That could be a issue with the TFT board. (which usually causes a distorted picture) The TFT not that big of board located in the upper center looking in the back of the set. I think this is the board that feeds the picture to the front panel.

This could also be a ribbon cable with one pin not making good contact to the display screen. I would hope for a easy fix as it's major if the panel is the culprit and would need replacing.

You might look for a local Sony Certified Shop should know the fix right off. If not the shop or tech can call a top-tier Sony Tech for advice. You can also call Sony and ask what local shop to use in your area that's Sony approved.

Is it any easy way to enter text from YouZtube or Netflix?

I bought a wireless keyboard (Logitech K400 Plus) and it did not work with this TV.

I tried to enable Bluetooth and paired with my iPad, no luck.

Hi,

First Sorry for my english, but i'm not a native speaker, but i try my best.

Why i write you all:

We move to our new house at march and i was able to find a lightly used w850 in 65" as replacement for my good old Panasonic TX-P50GT30 in the Livingroom.

I choosed this one, because it should be one of the best "Plasma Replacement TVs" made by Sony (After the W900).

Now i searched for the best Settings an found a lot of posts here.

So i would like to ask, if someone could send me the legendary Settings from WhiteSands?

I would be very pleased about that.

Unfortunately i'm not able to write WhiteSands directly, because i haven't 15 Posts yet.

Greetings
Robert

Huge shoutout and thanks to Mr. Whitesands for his kindness and knowledge of tvs especially the w850a. I got his tv settings and it made a difference. Colors pop and blacks are deep. I haven't tried 3D or blurays yet but can't wait.

Just want to chime in here. While I am now in the process of building a home theater with projection equipment, I still have my w850a which I purchased 2 years ago sitting in my living room and it is simply amazing even today. I compared the picture quality to a friend's 4k curved samsung yada yada and I still believe the w850a is superior. Great investment.

Nice to see that someone agrees with me. I have saying the same thing about my 55W900A for almost 2 years now.

My friend is looking for a new TV but the 65w850A is no longer available. He may get a 4K this time.

Do you guys have any recommendations for a new TV with PQ comparable to ours?

Hi all,

I am looking for 1 of these 3 sony 1080p models: kdl65w850a, KDL65S990A, or kdl65w950b to upgrade my 7 or 8 year old kds60a3000. I've had no luck on ebay or craigslist after over a month of searching and figure this might be a decent venue to see if any of you folks are looking to sell yours. I am in westchester county, NY and would be willing to dirve 150 miles or so to pick up. Send me a PM if interested.

Thanks!
Luke

Good luck Krazyboy trying to get anyone to sell their W850. Next to the W900A which I own the W850 is one of the finest 1080p tv's that were made by Sony. Both the W900A and W850A still to this day have 5 star rating's on Amazon which say's alot for set's that were made in 2013/2014. You can still find them on Amazon I believe for sale but here's some advise for you and it's only my opinion. Stay the hell away from the W950B. Poor contrast and poor black level's killed this tv sale's wise and Sony pulled them fast which speak's volumes. But good luck in your search.

Thanks for the advice! The only siting of any of these for me (other than cross country, local pick only listings on ebay) was an 850a on craigslist back in december just before I started actively looking for one of these sets. The post was 2 weeks old when I saw it, and the set had been sold already

I may just suck it up and drop ~2k on the xbr65x930c. I checked it out at best buy today, and it looked phenomenal.

So there is one on amazon now. Like-new condition. Total with shipping is 1360. Seems high to me...

I almost bought the KDL-XBR65X900A 4K TV back when I bought my W900A. Do I regret not buying it? Nope. I dont have alot of love for 4K and I wont go into why but the 930c is a nice tv.

Honestly if it's "Like New" that's not a bad price especially with how the W850A is still so popular with alot of people. They could be asking alot more. Hell I saw my W900A last month on Amazon going for 2 grand from a seller and he had one used and one new and they both were gone within a week. He sold the used one for $1500.

Is there a particular reason why you're only looking at the w850a, s990a, and w950b? Is it the low display lag for gaming? $1360 is too high IMO for a 1080P LCD in 2016 unless you specifically need a feature one of these sets offers. I paid $1500 in 2014 for a new 65w850a to use as a gaming TV. At this stage I would put your money towards a 4k model. Samsung has a few with low display lag.

I've never understood the negativity for the w950b here on AVS. On paper it's the successor to the w802a (IPS screen, low display lag, passive 3D) with the added benefit of Triluminos and a 65 inch option. The w802a got overall good reviews here and yet the w950b for the most part did not. The w950B actually gets pretty good reviews on other sites, especially gaming circles. Currently the overall customer rating for the w950b on Amazon is identical to the w850a and w900a at 4.5 stars.

I aint hating on the w950b I'm just going by what I have read and seen with my own eye's. It come's nowhere close to the color's or the black level's of my w900a and that could be because the w900a uses the deep black panel along with the use of QD technology AND it uses a VA panel and not a IPS panel as the w950b uses. I cannot comment on how it matches up with the color's of the w850a. That would be WhiteSands to comment on that.

Ive got a 60" now and would like to go a bit bigger.

Those are sonys best 65" HD models as best as I can tell. If i could get 1 for $700 or so, i think that is a good deal. 1360 was too high for a 2-3 year old used tv. For me, 4k is still very much in its infancy but manufacturers are pushing it by no longer offering quality HD sets (save the 55" lg oled and maybe a few others). I didnt want to spend the money for 4k when i will barely watch any 4k on it in the foreseeable future.

That said, i ended up buying an open box sony xbr65x930c 4k from best buy for $1900. I am picking it up tomorrow. If it doesnt work out somehow, i think i will wait for that 55" lg HD oled to hit 1400 and pull the trigger on it.

Good deal. Enjoy!

Well, it didnt work out. The upscaling just wasnt that great. There was a noticable decrease in image sharpness with increased noise and digital pixelation. My wife could see it too, though it didn't bother her since the set was so much brighter than our old TV. It bugged the heck out of me though. I ended up taking it back since we had a van rental for the day. I feel like if I kept it, I would have buyer's remorse, and now that I've returned it, I'm questioning that decision. Damned if I do, damned if I don't I guess.

I'm going to keep on in my search for 1 of these 65" HD sony models. Someone on craigslist by me has a 950b for $1200. He says it is new in the box. I know some people hate on the 950b, but it's got the same rating on amazon as the 850a. To be continued...
