I agree. After reading the f8000's thread, it seems to have far worse problems than the w850a.

Any settings not listed here, stay at factory default.

SCENE sets to GENERAL. This prevents the TV from switching your picture over to some Sony pre-sets that may darken the picture in their Scene list. Although you can manually choose one of those if you want.

PICTURE MODE - STANDARD Setting.....Use Standard for most of your TV viewing

Backlight, set to Max....This one step really brings up the picture quality.

Color Temperature to Neutral.
.........................................................................................

PICTURE MODE - VIVID......only 4 setting changes here.

Backlight, sets to Max, some may prefer 7 for less brightness.

Color, sets to 57

Color Temperature to Neutral

Sharpness, sets to 50

That's it, your done. PM me if you want my Custom Settings

I don't mean to beat this to death, but what difference do you see, and why do you prefer, color temperature set to "neutral" as compared to "cool"?

I went to a local FutureShop and they now have W850B on display.
Price in Canadian funds:
60-inch $2,299
65-inch $2,699
70-inch $3,099

W850A is now $2,699, it was on sales last week for $2,199. Strange because I would think the price of W850A would fall once they introduce the new models.

Did anyone compare W850A and W850B?

One more question: Where is remote control sensor on the TV? Wonder if I can put my soundbar in front of the TV?

Be aware they will add a required shipper insurance fee after you buy.   Read all the fine print.  Be prepared to say no to other "extras" they will hard sell you after you click buy.  One should compare the actual walk out price to other vendors on line to make informed decision on whether money saved is worth hassles you may have if tv is a bad one.   Read up on return policy.  Google them to learn about other's experience.

Great price on the price maybe to good to be true. East Coast TV don't look to be a Sony Authorized Dealer and are not listed on Amazon's list as such, and it gets worse.

I usually do a google search on these low priced online companies and found this one from you tube. This outfit has lots of customers upset.

This so called company is nothing but a scam. You got to read this below.

Page down to Method 3 on this site and read everything below that.

Play this video below all the way through. Also read the comments below the video. It's reading things like this that made me buy from legit large companies like Amazon, Best Buy, Costco and Sam's Club.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMiudAZTDNE

Here is a list of Sony authorized dealers from the Amazon people and is good to bookmark or keep in your favorites list.

The 850b line is a step down from the 850a. It does not have Sony’s Triluminos color technology. Future shop has been running ads on the 850a every couple weeks at 2199.99. Just wait for that and grab it! Regarding the sound bar you would have to have a really deep stand because the circler base is about 16 inches deep. Check back in this thread because there was a guy who mounted a sound bar on top of the tv using a pretty cool little gizmo that attaches to the back of the set.

The remote sensor is located in the sony logo bottom dead centre. The 3D sync transmitter is also located there.

That's easy to answer. First off Vivid from the factory is way to bright. So I prefer to turn the backlight down to 7 to make Vivid watchable. Vivid is to sharp with the factory setting at 75, so I move it down to 50 which is still sharp enough and looks great for regular TV viewing or when streaming a movie or playing a DVD/ blu ray disk.

The ultra bright LED's in this set are a translucent blue color so the Triluminos filter don't have to do much to add to the blue colors. I found when I used the factory setting Cool for the color temperature, then the picture looked a little to blue. Especially on sky and water scenes. The cool setting also made the reds have a touch of blue mixed in which didn't look natural like reds should look. The Triluminos filter in the panel works mostly in creating a balance of bright red and green light then mixed with the blue creates a sunlight kelvin used to illuminate the back of the LCD screen. It's the LCD screen that produces the various colors that you see when watching the TV and is controlled by the Color setting. It's the combination of the Dynamic Edge LED backlight and the LCD panel that gives this set it's deep blacks.

This is why I prefer using the Color Temperature set to Neutral on Vivid, Standard and Custom picture modes.

I just checked the Amazon site for this TV and it's still showing the price at $2298. They also put back their 2% back in Rewards which gives you some Amazon credit to use.

Their site now says: In Stock. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.

Evidently Amazon was waiting for another shipments of these sets to their warehouses.

I did read that Sony removed Triliminus color and X-tended dynamic range in the w850b. i read the descriptions of these features but not sure how they impact the overall PQ. Is there any known reason why Sony dumbed down in the new offering? Manufacturing costs?

As for the TV stand, I like one with 16-inch depth (top shelf) which would just work. With the location of the remote sensor and the small distance between the TV base and the screen, we cannot place the soundbar in front of the TV anyway. I think I will have no choice but to place the soundbar in the middle shelf.

White Sands, A few Questions, ?does the term Triluminos imply that quantum dot technology is also incorporated within the panel? Does the 65w850a have the quantum dots? What is your opinion of the triluminos display of the 65w950b? I look forward to any and all comments.

850A has everything the 900A has except the quantum dot and the lower MotionFlow XR 480 instead of XR 960. Slightly better blacks on 900A. 55" too small for me so this set is next best thing.

Z...Thanks for your reply, That makes sense, and I agree Sony messed up by not offering a 65w900 . I have been waiting for them to rectify that misjudgement, although not patiently.mad.gif

So far a UK quality review gave it a poor rating. The new sony Triluminos panel they used didn't have the same deep blacks as this W850a that looks so good

This below may help explain better about the Triluminos quantum dot technology. Evidently the 65W850 was not available at the time they made this video.

Another good one.

For the W850 it looks like Sony copied their more expensive 4K, X850 set other than not using the expensive 4K panel and some 4K circuitry. I read somewhere the W850 was very similar inside and is how the W850 got the fastest quad processor ever used so far in a 1080i set.

The sound and vision revue states that the 850a does not have quantum dot triluminos display and they specifically asked Sony. They didn't get an answer (well not one they've printed). Triluminos has appeared before about 2008 with a different technology than QD. It was stopped as it was too expensive. There are articles on the internet about it.
Perhaps this has been mixed with the cheaper S-PVA panels to very good effect.

I am picking up my w805a in the next few days. i still have to decide if I should buy the 4-year extended warranty. It is pricy, $499.

What should I do first after I unbox it? Any tips on the installation?

I read here someone mentioned shipped date. What is the significant of this shipped date?

When I bought my 46Z4100 a few years ago, I had to update the firmware right away and 2 more updates in the following year. Is there amy firmware update for w850a?

Does the w850a use color IQ quantum dots? The w900a lists it has having the color IQ but can not seem to find that for the w850a.

You might look into the Square Trade 5-year extended warranty from Amazon. It's cost shows to be $248 looking just above the Add to Cart on the Amazon page for this set. Use the link below for you TV price vs years of extended warranty. I don't think it matters where you bought you TV. I think you have 30 days from buying your set to buy the extended warranty. It's best to call Amazon's customer service to ask details about Square Trade's policy. Amazon customer service, 1 888 280-3331

The shipping date is important especially with Amazon to keep up with the 30 day return policy and 14 day price match that Amazon offers. I'm sure other Authorized Sony dealers are similar. Some offer a 30 day price match. If you buy you set from Costco they will give you a second year extra warranty for free. Then for $100 or so they will extend their square trade warranty up to 4-years.

The W850A has about 5 firmware updates over the past 6 months. The new sets recently sold should already be updated. Your new set may require a single update when you connect your set to the internet though a router. I used the same Cat-5 cable I had on my earlier set, that this new W850 replaced.

Here is the Square Trade price list for various priced TV's.

http://www.amazon.com/SquareTrade-5-Year-Protection-Plan-2750/dp/B005STXQWC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395050058&sr=8-1&keywords=b005stxqwc

Sony uses their own unique method of using the quantum dot technology, naming theirs Triluminos.

The UK version of the 55w900a set. This set also uses the Triluminos display and may be why this set has 111 amazon customer reviews with 95 of them being 5-stars. The w850a is also showing to be top 5-star set. Evidently Sony's Triluminos display is a big selling point over the competition.
