so last year i bought a Panny ST50. i have been regretting it ever since. i have had nothing but problems with image retention and uniformity ever since i bought this set. i broke it in for nearly 100 hours.... i did the settings i found on this very site. my wife cant even watch videos on netflix with subtitles for a few hours without getting darkened patches where the subtitles are. i cant play games because if there is any UI, it will be there for literally weeks before fading if i play for more than 3 hours.... and there are stips of the screen in the top left and right corners that are MUCH brighter than the rest of the screen, so whenever a movie or game pans across a blue sky or grey wall or anything like that, you can see these lines of bright screen stand out GREATLY.

SO... i am saying good bye to plasma (and good riddance), as nice as the blacks may be, and switching back to LED. what i am looking for is, like the ST50 was the best cost per quality solution in plasmas, what is the best cost per quality solution in LED sets this year? thanks for the info folks.

looking for a 55-60" set. needs to have 3D... dont really care about apps and such since i have an Apple TV. not really looking to spend more than 1800-2K.

--FYI, i will never buy a "warranty" from the yellow tag store again. bought one ($250) with my ST50 that was supposed to cover these sorts of issues, and they wont even come out to look at the set. "just sounds like image retention, which is normal for a plasma".... well no crap folks, however i dont think it should be getting retention after viewing something for 30 freaking minutes....

Yes. You can name stores all day.
There are a lot of good LEDs in your price range but I cant really say which is best. I also have a 60ST50 and while I dont think its as bad as yours I am disappointed.

No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

Have you tried browsing around the LCD threads just to see what everyone is talking about? Thats how I found out about the ST50.

You may scoff at Vizio but theyve come a long way in the last few years. This is in your price range and a lot of people like it. It would be near the top of my list if I was in your shoes.

seeing a lot of complaints about flashlighting, clouding, and other oddities, to the point where some people have had to return up to 3 separate units.

it does have a good rating on amazon, but i have learned not to trust that at all when it comes to TVs.

Thanks for the suggestion.

If you're lucky, see if BB has any demo 60" Sharp Elites. Best FALD led built. (2010 winner at the Value Electronics shootout) No longer available new, so look for demo. It will come with a 2 yr warranty from Elite, if purchased from a BB store.

Another option is to look here on the...LCD Flat Panel Great Found Deals!
That's where I found my used 70" Elite.

Anthem D2v, McIntosh MC205, Elite PRO-70X5FD, Oppo BDP-103, Dish hopper, Richard Gray Power Company 400S, B&W Nautilus, JL audio Fathom f113, Harmony One, empty wallet ;>)

First, I absolutely love having my Panasonic VT50. It works very well for me and my friends love the picture quality for movies, sports and then some. I don't do games so I never even consider the notion of any ghost/screen burn retention.

However given the original post, I would agree the Elite is an excellent candidate as is the top Sony offering. These two seem to be more than marginally better than other 'similar' screens.

the sharp elites are way beyond my price range.... and the only sony i can find people talking about is the W900A.

the sony is certainly a consideration, but did not receive that great of a review from CNET. what do people think of it?

I have the Samsung UN55FH6030 from Costco, 55". Its 3d, has nice blacks and its not a smart TV, so price is lower. BB sells it also, but they are higher than the $799 I paid for mine. I calibrated it using the Disney WOW disk, it looks pretty darn good.

CNet gave it a pretty positive review. Also check the the Home Theater mag review on their website. Very nice impressions have been shared about the W900A.

yeah, the review is positive.... but 3/5 stars isnt that stellar of a review. amazon has it at 5 stars though, so people seem to be pretty happy with it.

You wrote, not really looking to spend more than 1800-2K.
I would not have mentioned the Elite PRO-60X5fd if it were not in the price range.
New units are not available, which is way out of your price range. Units I'm talking about are store demo, with full 2 year warranty, or used units with extended warranty like i bought.
I've seem them at BB lower than 2K and for sale here even lower than BB.
You mentioned good reviews, consider the Elite was voted best tv (and that's against all led and all plasmas) in 2010's Value Electronics shoot out.

As far as led's go, the Elite and Sony XBR929/950 are the best FALD you'll find. Some XBR950 still available new.
The current line leds, including 4k are edge lit. (Except the $40,000 Samsung and the two LG's)

Full ArrayLocal Dimming (I think)

If you want 3D go passive. I have an M551D Vizio and 3D is great & glasses are light & cheap. Check out review of passive vs active a Cnet. Every review I've seen gives passive the edge. Given that, I think Sony.& Sharp are both active. As for the comment about Vizio light bleed, any edge lit will have those issues. I don't see any problem with my 55" I only notice it on pure black screen which I don't spend a lot of time watching.

On this forum in the LCD Flat Panel Great Found Deals, someone just posted....Just picked up a 60" Elite from Mangolia with 1088 S/N for $1685 OTD.
