So really the hdmi 2.0 update is pointless for 3 inputs because they dont have hdcp 2.2. In theory, unencrypted or less than 2.2 encrypted 4k would work fine, but given the push for 2.2 to protect uhd content, its likely future source gear will require it.

Well, it finally arrived! I've been watching some TV shows on it tonight.

I'm using the Marantz AV8801 to take the DVR output, convert it to 4K, and output it to the TV via the HDMI 1 input (Audioquest Carbon cables all around, for whatever that is worth).

Remember, I'm coming from a 52 inch 1080p LCD TV to a 65 inch 4K TV, so multiple variables other than the Sony XBR part of both sets.

Very, very, very crisp and clear picture on the new set. The level of detail you can see is pretty impressive.

The auto setup was very easy. I have tried a few settings, but nothing serious. Random clicks of the remote to try this or that and see what the difference is.

The true test will come on Sunday, watching football.

So far, so good.

Explain this a little further, are you saying the hdmi 2.0 upgrade is bogus cause it won't play the 4k at 60p directly through the tv anyway? Would the samsung with evolution kit or the panny wt600 be better for real hdmi. 2.0?

I'm sort of thinking out loud here...

Like the Sony 4K media player, any future UHD source devices will likely require HDCP 2.2. If only one port has HDMI 2.0 & HDCP 2.2, the HDMI 2.0 update really didn't help future proof that much.

Mine will be here tomorrow. The FMP-X1 is sitting all hooked up (except for power) waiting. Can't wait. Hope I don't have any issues with setting things up.

Arrived. Not too bad out of the box. No visible clouding, light bleed or crease like my last Sony 820. Now I need to find time to get a basic calibration done. Also need to set up my new account to access the 4K movies. Samples looked terrific. The box paired easily with the TV. The samples I tried that had 5.1 audio worked correctly.

Picked this up yesterday. A couple of questions.

what calibration settings are you guys using?

I mainly use it for 40% TV viewing (comcast), 40% blu ray, 20% gaming.

The black levels seems terrible compared to my Kuro.

Massive sale at the moment in australia. 55" 850 is 3099 with $500 rebate on top. So $2600 total.

I have a 65" x900 already but I want a 55" for a pc monitor. Does the 850 55 suffer from the same Horizontal lines? Hows the input lag? Or should I just wait for Gen 2.

Does anyone know the command to get to the advanced diagnostic screen? I know you get to one of the service screens by going to (power off), display, 5, +(volume), power on - that brings up a mini service screen but there is a full screen one that gives far more information.

My Sony XBR-65X850A screen calibration settings.....

First a disclaimer: I'm not a pro tv calibrator, but I do have experience calibrating monitors with printers at a university print shop. I have a good knowledge of colour.

Also, my personal TV picture preference is 1) Bright  2) Crisp and Sharp 3) very slightly over saturated colours (1% to 3% approx.)

And, I hate 'motion enhancers' and never use them.

That said, I couldn't find any screen calibration settings anywhere on the internet that even came close to what pleases my eye

The below tip and settings work very well with most cable channels (Shaw cable box) and same settings work well with my PS3 for both mp4 720p videos and Bluray disks.

First, a tip:

Hit the HOME button, go to 'SETTINGS' -> 'PICTURE + DISPLAY SETTINGS'

Scroll down to 'PRO PICTURE SETUP'

Scroll down to 'DYNAMIC RANGE'

Set each HDMI setting to 'FULL' (by default, my TV was set to AUTO, and changing it to FULL made a big difference)

Now for my settings

( If I don't mention a setting, it's because it's either OFF or 0 )

I start with GENERAL/CUSTOM then hit RESET

Backlight - Max

Picture - 95

Brightness - 58

Color - 56

Hue - 0

Color Temp - Neutral

Sharpness - 64

Noise - Auto

Mpeg Noise - Auto

Dot - Auto

Reality - Auto

Video Area - Auto

Smooth Gradation - Low

Got to Advance Settings

Hit the RESET

Black Enhance - MEDIUM

Advance Contrast - MEDIUM

Live Color - MEDIUM

Detail Enhancer - MEDIUM

Edge Enhancer - MEDIUM

Some programs won't look perfect, but most will look great (in my opinion)

Feel free to tweak these settings to your taste.

Cheers

I ended up using the settings from a 900 user from here:

Quite happy with them.

Thanks, the tip about turning off the Light Sensor in Preferences is a good one. Makes the overall picture brighter.

However the rest of the settings in that pdf made the mid tones and shadow detail on my XBR-65X850A rather murky.

Anyone else get a stop/start, non-smooth flow of scrolling text like what you see when you watch ESPN? I am upscaling to 4k via my Marantz AV8801.

Love the set but this is a bit annoying (first world problems are a real pain…).

Anyone get the FMP-X1?

I'm going to hook mine up today. I couldn't find a good option for setting this up on my Harmony One - couldn't find DVR, PVR or the right device to select for this unit.

I have. The player is actually controlled through the TV. There isn't even a remote for the X1. You get to it two ways: Through the Home button (Sony 4K is listed on the bar) or through the SEN button where it is the Sony Entertainment Network folder. HDMI out goes to HDMI 4 of the TV and if you run surround HDMI 2 out to your receiver. Player settings are accessed in the upper right.

CES 2014 has revealed sonys 2024 plans -

XBR-X950B series: 4K resolution, direct LED local dimming Sony's newest flagship packs all the picture quality enhancements, including that sweet dimming. It's only available in truly large sizes, and will likely cost a mint.
Sizes: 85, 65 inches
XBR-X900B series: 4K resolution, edge-lit LED local dimming The main difference between this and the flagship, aside from screen size selection, is that the local dimming is available from an edge-lit array. If it performs as well as similarly-equipped Sonys like the W900A--our favorite LED TV for picture quality last year--that's not a bad thing.
Sizes: 79, 65, 55 inches
XBR-X850B series: 4K resolution, Triluminous display Another thing we loved about the W900A was its color, which seemed a cut above the competition thanks to its quantum dot equipped Triluminous backlight. The X850B, Sony's cheapest 4K set, keeps that backlight but loses any kind of local dimming.
Sizes: 70, 65, 55, 49 inches
KDL-W950B series: 1080p resolution, edge-lit LED local dimming Speaking of the W900A, this TV seems like its direct successor. It gets all the picture quality extras of the higher-end 4K X900A series, without the extra pixels you probably won't be able to discern. Win!
Sizes: 65, 55 inches
KDL-W850B series: 1080p resolution, Wedge design Sony's mainstream 1080p line begins with the W850B, a big-screen series that's the cheapest to get the "iconic Wedge" design chops found on the step-up sets. It incorporates large front-facing speakers in a relatively small footprint.
Sizes: 70, 60 inches
KDL-W800B series: 1080p resolution, 3D Gone from this smaller series is the wedge, but it preserves the 3D compatibility also found on all of the more-expensive models. It's tough to tell from Sony's preliminary press material whether it offers better 2D picture quality than the step-down sets.
Sizes: 55, 50 inches
KDL-60W630B: 1080p resolution, Smart TV We liked the 60-inch R550/R520A series from 2013, and this set looks like its direct successor.
Sizes: 60 inches
KDL-W600B series: 1080p resolution, Smart TV If you want a 2014 Sony for as little money as possible, the W600B is your boy--assuming the company doesn't sneak in a smaller or cheaper set later in the year.
Sizes: 48, 40 inches

I have setup the Harmony One and the set with X1. Essentially I only flip the components on, select the X1 HDMI input on the AV receiver and hit the TV home button. I just navigate from there. Wish there was a "4k App" button on the remote like the Netflix button though smile.gif

Btw, anyone yet find either a PC graphics card that does HDMI 2.0/60Hz or a DisplayPort 1.2->HDMI 2.0 adapter for this thing? Really itching to try native 4K gaming at 60fps. Just because. smile.gif

Anyone know if our XBR65X850a's have the dedicated h265 decoder needed for Netflix 4k streaming?

Apparently the "new" Sony 4k TVs have it but I don't know if we missed the boat:
