I am shopping for a TV at least 70" (could be bigger but no more than $3K).

I've looked at the below models so far and was wondering what people thought in terms of PQ, or whether there is a better choice out there:

Vizio M701d-A3R

Sony KDL-70R550A

The Vizio is 240Hz. Unfortunately, no stores nearby have them so I can't see the picture myself.

Vizio 80" 3D LED M801D-A3 w/ Denon AVR-1612, Polk Audio RM6750 | Sony Bravia XBR-60LX900 w/ Sony HTCT550W 3D Sound Bar | Sony SXRD KDS-R70XBR2 w/ Onkyo HT-S770 | Sony PS3 (Slim) | DIRECTV Genie HR44-500, C41s | Harmony 700

Both the Vizio and the Sony are pretty good screens. They both tend to be on the glossy side, so look out for screen reflections when viewing.

Vizio

I think the Sony is a better looking set - it looks more expensive than it really is. The Vizio is priced at $50 more than the Sony on Amazon as of this evening.

Sony

If ambient light from windows and lamps reflecting off your TV would present an issue, most 70 inch Sharp panels have a semi-matte surface that is less reflective.

Thanks myoda. You don't think the 120 vs 240 hz weights that much, do you?

No. I run my set with all processing off. A lot of it is marketing and adds very little to improving picture quality.

It just gets silly:

In an effort to keep prices down and sales up, TV companies are pushing TVs with "fake" refresh rates. Know your terms and tech to make sure you're really getting what you think you're paying for.

This is an older clip, but the info is still accurate..

Not familiar with the Vizio but I owned that Sony for ONE DAY and the irony is that it reminded me of a basic budget Vizio. Hated it! Large size with Zero wow factor. I went from a two yr old Samsung 60D8000 I moved to my Den and there was no comparison on PQ versus the Samsung and in fact it was the worst Sony I've ever seen and thank god I bought it with return rights with Amazon and sent it back the next day and replaced it with slightly smaller 65F8000 - Yes more money but hell that Sony was horrific and while the F8000 is not the Holy Grail Panel it hands down blows away this Sony. I own a 4 yr old Z4100 Sony in the Bedroom that's still an awesome PQ and I'm not anti Sony at all but this thing is a fake LG I suspect carrying a Sony badge.

I don't mean to offend Vizio folks but I owned one a few years ago and gave it away after a few weeks to my daughter as I could not tolerate it's bland PQ that dates back about ten years ago and I fully understand there have been some local dimming quality monster size Vizio's but the basic budget ones are exactly that BUDGET for folks that will never view it after having an F8000 PQ Pop. It takes more than size to equal immersion I learned from this 70" Sony what a big TURD it was!biggrin.gif Sony should be ashamed to place it's badge on this Turd!

Samsung 65F8000, 60D8000, 40HU6350, Panasonic 50E60 LCD's
