The TV screen is always refreshing at 120Hz. What is displayed on the screen when you press the info button is the refresh rate of the selected input, which in this case is 60Hz for the PS4.

So are you saying that even though when I push the info button and it says 1080p 60hz while playing Battlefield 4 on PS4 the refresh rate is actually at 120hz? I plugged my PS3 in and it says 720p 60hz while playing The Last Of Us or GTA 5. And when I plug my laptop in it still says 60hz. Now I can honestly say that once you tweak with the picture settings to the right places THEN this tv looks AWESOME and outputs just as good as an image as my dad's 47inch 120hz Vizio. So are you saying that it will always have a 120hz refresh rate no matter what the info button says? Or if I were to hook up my PS4 to a 60hz tv would I get the same quality? I just want my brand new $450 tv to tell me it's taking advantage of all the technology it says it has.

Or are you saying that the PS3 or PS4 can't output 120hz. Or are you saying that no matter what the TV is always set at a 120hz refresh rate and the info button is just showing the refresh of the system and that has nothing to do with the tv refresh rate. Like there two different things?

You are correct -- the info button will show the resolution and refresh rate of the input. The screen output is always 120Hz, just like the the screen is always 1080p. The input is just scaled/duplicated to fit the screen.

It is my understanding that the PS4 or PS3 can only output 60Hz.

Furthermore, in my experience, it seems common that these lower end 120Hz TVs actually can't accept anything greater than 60Hz input anyway -- the sole benefit of 120Hz is really just doubling the display of each 60Hz frame. (Even 24Hz Blu Rays get converted to 60Hz by these sets, the result of which is then doubled by the 120Hz screen.) Some say that still helps with motion blur, but the difference is probably pretty slight.

I have to be at work in a few mins so I have to make this quick. My settings that I believe are good when I play BF4 on PS4 are starting with back light and going down are: backlight 39, 62, 55, 68, 0, 75. And then I have all of the advanced settings turned off to reduce input lag. I keep it in wide screen. And I will flick the motion enhancement from off to film mode every now and then because I do notice a difference when it's on but I can only set it to film mode and not high or low because the high and low settings for motion enhancement cause really bad input lag. I have not heard any audio lag even though my PS4 is connected with a HDMI and a fiber optic cable. And the dark corners thing is true but I may have noticed it after reading this but it really isn't bad enough for me to take it back. The only real complaints I have is if it is true 120hz. To my UNTRAINED eye it looks good, really good actually. Let me know if that helped and if you can please give me advise on how to make the picture better. Thank you

I think it's "true" 120Hz in the sense that the screen indeed refreshes 120 times per second. It does not appear to be a 60Hz set with special lighting gimmicks to simulate a faster refresh.

So if it looks good to you, don't worry, be happy. smile.gif

Just got the 50" Toshiba 50L1350U Best Buy has on sale for $399 today.  I tried to like the Sharp/Insignia but I just cant take the dark corners anymore.  I also have the sharp sound bar and the TV doesn't seem to wake it from standby.  So back you go.  PS still not firmware update too so I am guessing they don't care about fixing the lipsink issue.  So for an even swap I think Toshiba is a much better unit.

Same here. I can not take the dark corners either. So I returned it and go for samsung 46f6300 when the promotion came out couple days ago.

I will say that there are certain instances were I can really notice the dark cornered and other times I can't. To me it seems to be more noticeable when the picture is a certain way or color. It's more annoying now that I no to look at it after reading this thread.

Just throwing this out there for those of you using PS3 (and probably PS4's or other consoles) who want to get somewhat of a fix for the lip sync issue over HDMI on the tv's speakers. I was watching Hulu on my PS3 and the lip sync was completely off. I tried practically every setting on the tv to absolutely no avail but found a solution through the PS3's Sound Settings under Settings on the XMB. Just select Audio Output Settings > HDMI > Manual and UNCHECK Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch. The only things that should be checked are the ones that are greyed out by default (Linear PCM 2ch 44.1khz and 48khz). Confirm the changes and anything you watch should have the lip sync issue fixed (with motion enhancement enabled).

Just keep in mind that there's still an bit of delay when on game mode (or having all enhancements off) but it seems less than when Dolby Digital was enabled. Hope this helps some of you out. Let's pray for a firmware fix though. LOL

Hey Fat Ugly Guys,

Can you help me out for a second? Cause you look like you know what you're talking about here. I was looking at this TV for the purposes of using it as a monitor, and I'm glad I saw your post.

A few questions I have.

1. What's important when looking at getting a TV to be used as a monitor?
2. What kind of refresh rate am I looking form? 120 or should I get higher?
3. How important is brightness for this?
4. Anything else?

Thanks!

Toshiba has a lot better backlight on whites and better menu system.  Base is a little flimsy.  Overall much better TV.  I just got a 32" insignia and the menus are almost identical to the fake sharp I just returned.

We just put up 5 of the Toshiba sets in classrooms to be run only off of laptops, VGA or HDMI.

I am not any more or less impressed with the Toshiba over the Sharp.

The Toshiba has a mirror finish, shiny as all get out, like a plasma. Great for letting color and light out, horrible for reflections.
One Prof moved her class to a room with a projector because of the glare and other issues.

The Sharp is like everyone says dark corner, meh, I hardly notice them at all and blurays left in normal settings have black bands top and bottom there so???
The images, I swear are better as the set gets more time on it, less banding in colors etc; It had a couple of small pixilation goofs, but those too have stopped completely.

The longer I have it the more I like it.
I went to Bestbuy and shopped 3X since getting it and there is no way I'm dumping another $3-500 into a supposedly "better" set.

If it blows up I will go Vizio 240z if I can find one, otherwise, I'm good and I'm sitting tight to see where 4K leads us!

I picked up this tv it does not produce the best nor a horrible pic but with simple tweaking it looks fine to me. I just find the snobby attitudes towards some of these electronics, especially tv's these days, unless you drop crazy cash most hdtvs look pretty similar imo

True, some are really picky. But for me, I'd say there are better TVs out there in this price range.

Hello LC-50LB15OU owners,

Could someone enlighten my brother, who owns this model, why HDMI does not look as good a Component when connected to this tv. I'd told him I'd post his question on the AVS forum, for these owners may have some input to what's going on. Here's what my brother wrote me:

My TV is a Sharp 50" LC-50LB150U, advertized to be 1080P and 120hz.
My receiver is a Dish VIP722K DVR, connected directly via component cables and detected
by the TV @ 720p, because it looks better than the the HDMI which has such poor resolution.
It's not a pixilation or motion problem, it just looks like crap. I don't have a blu-ray player
to compare it to, but the DVD player looks better with the component connection than the
satellite with the HDMI. The Wii player with the yellow AV cable looks better than the
satellite did with the HDMI. The satelllite receiver looks better with the component that
with the HDMI. So, tell me again why HDMI is better? I have 3 of them on the TV and
can't tolerate the picture, even after havng tried several different quality HDMI cables.

I haven't had time to mess around with the advanced settings.

Anything you can find out is appreciated.

My brother and I look forward to your comments, questions and suggestions to help improve his picture quality.
Cheers,
bekindrewind

Depending on your channel Dish or any DTV broadcast of any kind can look like crap or look better from channel to channel it depends on the original channel/broadcaster compression ratio and feed quality to Dish, the original program quality from the content provider and finally the Dish feed which is HD LITE
for example some channels are more compressed ,and a lower bit rate than some others Nat Geo,Discovery channels ,and *some special interest channels usually have good quality feeds . Broadcast TV wether cable, sat or OTA is nowhere near as good as 1080p blue Ray .

I've read that sometimes simply reversing a HDMI cable end to end might help . I've never run into that myself though .

The bigger the screen sometimes the picture is not as good as a smaller screen until you get into
more expensive sets with better panels and video processing .

HDMI is better in that one cable is capable of replacing ~ 8 cables all in all 5 for surround sound and 3 for video and can provide 5.1 audio return with no loss of quality then ofc there is the HDCP thing for blue ray and protected content . http://www.hdmi.org/consumer/finding_right_cable.aspx

Make sure the ECO or energy settings are turned off on the TV on All the inputs then set the back light usually to max along with contrast (or picture on some sets ) and start out with color and brightness about 50 hugh /tint at 0 and go from there . or maybe some good settings are in this thread

First you have to make sure your
The DISH DVR output should be set to 1080i so the TV EIDE can detect it as a 1080i easy to do menu > system set up > HDTV set up >select 1080i >
done >keep settings when prompted >view live TV if by the odd chance 720P looks better on your TV then change it back.

CNN isn't bad .Fox not great etc. In any event TV broadcasts, OTA,SAT/CATV are all compressed some more than others and can vary widely in quality
none are true 1080P like a well made Blue Ray .

Composite or HDMI should be very equal if anything HDMI can occasionally be very slightly better . have your brother try to adjust the settings on each input settings are usually exclusive for each input.

OH .....I don't own one of these sets maybe an owner can add something .

920 posts to date. That's a lot of reading. Could someone direct me to the page or pages where owners have posted their favorite settings. Maybe my brother needs to get out of what ever the factory setting he's in and change to what owners here use. I don't think my brother has any calibration disc's and he doesn't have a blu-ray player yet. So he's really not seeing what the tv is capable of.
