This is my setup:
Seiki SE50UY04 50" with Firmware 522712
Mac Mini running MacOS X 10.9 Mavericks
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB graphics
Active Startech HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Adapter MDP2HDSW
"High Speed" HDMI cable
I can not get 4K resolution to work and can't figure it out as it seems like other people are succeeding with all these pieces. In any 4K mode, it just wraps the display on the left half of my screen. Lower resolutions work fine. I've seen what I think is perfect 4K when I boot the Mac. The startup screen with just the Apple on a grey background looks glorious. Then when it switches to the login screen I'm stuck back at half screen. I've tried every variant I can think of in SwitchResX for settings to no avail. Is the Intel chipset the problem? Photo of the screwy half screen problem attached as well as example SwitchResX settings that cause it. You can't tell from the image, but it basically wraps the display over the left half of the screen twice. I can hyperspace the mouse off the right edge and back onto the left and back.
I have had only partial success with the active adapter...the startup screen reports a resolution of 3840 x 2160 at 30Hz, but it reverts to 1080p by the time the desktop comes up. This has to be because of the Mac OS, since when I startup in Windows 7 (using BootCamp) I'm able to run the same hardware at 3840 x 2160 with no problems whatsoever. By the way, this is the latest from Seiki on their upconverting HDMI cable:
By the way, congratulations on the Mac Pro...it is a stunning piece of machinery. Wish I had the money (and some practical use) for such beautiful beast.
I finally got my Mac MIni on 10.9 to work with the Seiki 39" 4K monitor. Unfortunately I'm not exactly sure how I did it. It is running out of the HDMI port and running at 17Hz. I kept going into SwitchResX and messing with settings. It was giving me the "half screen" issue and then seemed to just work. The resolution looks GREAT but 17Hz is pretty awful. The good news is that it will look great when I get my Mac Pro. If someone makes a patch so that I could get 30Hz, I would probably order another one for my Mac Mini.
Sorry...I uninstalled SwitchRezX when I couldn't get it to work. For the past couple of weeks I have been using the Seiki with a Windows 7 PC. The graphics card is a AMD Radeon HD7750 with 2GB RAM. Hopefully the next revision of Mavericks will allow the Mac Mini to output 4K from the DP as well as the HDMI jacks.
As I mentioned previously, the text in the OS X Menubar is too tiny, so I enabled 1080p HiDPI mode to keep the razor-sharp text and vibrant colors while enjoying the 2160p desktop.
Rudy, are you using switchresx or RDM? Or is this with just normal mac display settings?
I installed the clock patch, rebooted, and the monitor claimed 3840 but it was really 1920 (however, it was nice and crisp, but everything was large... definitely not 3840). When I messed with the display settings to see if I could get the menu bar tiny and large resolution, the display got messed up and now I can't get it from displaying only on the left half of the screen and really messed up....
Still playing with the settings, but curious how you were able to achieve this.... thanks for posting back though, hope I can get this to work!

With all of the HiDPI modes selected, the TV reports 3840 X 2160 @30Hz; when using any of the non-HiDPI resolutions (except the native res, of course), the TV scales the image to whatever you select at 60Hz, resulting in a softer image.
