The Samsung technician from the local electronics repair shop called to get details on my issue with my set. She asked what the symptoms were if I could send pics and he would be able to get back quickly with an appointment set-up. She called back shortly after receiving pics to ask a few follow up question involving transport and delivery and the condition of the box.
I once again explained that there was no box that I had purchased open item. I said yes and once again she said she would get back to me shortly. After a short time she called back saying that Samsung would allow them to come out and inspect the display,but if physical damage or apparent tampering were seen the warranty would be void. While the retailer I purchased the TV from is a certified retailer,service center and refurbished display provider I still purchased a used TV.
I ended up returning the TV and will patiently wait for the holiday sales hit before attempting to pick up another.
That is a shame because this is such a good TV but I think you have probably made the best choice. Even if they had fixed it free of charge you would likely always feel like something was wrong with it. At least I know I would. Maybe stay away from open boxes for awhile though
