For example --- does 2D 1080p look better on a Sony 55X900A (ultra) or a 55W900A ? or a Samsung 65F9000(ultra) or a 65F8000?

Is the PQ difference between the ultra and flagship 2K sets marginal?

Thanks in advance?

Generally speaking, 1080p looks just about identical on HD and UHD TVs. On a number of occasions, I've seen a 1080p plasma beat a UHD LCD in terms of total picture quality. Sony's UHD offering stands out for having superior upscaling versus the competition. In some scenes, the 55X900A outperformed HD models at rendering fine details, but the difference was still minor and required a scene with little or no movement. I've even seen 1080p look a little softer on some UHD panels, versus native HD. In each case, all of the TVs were calibrated.

Since we'll be siting 8+ ft away I cannot reap the benefits of a 4k source - I'd have to sit about 4 ft away to see the 4k in all it's glory - looks like a nice flagship 2k set is the way to go ....
