Does anyone know how the local dimming works in sets like the w900a? They are edge lit sets but behave exactly like FALD sets. For example, if your have white letters in a black back ground, only the white letters will be illuminated. It will even have the blooming artifact of FALD sets. How are they achieving this effect using edge led's?

That's not the full story. It is impossible to imitate FALD with edgelit local dimming, which is more like pseudo-local dimming. The maoin difference is that in addition to blooming, edgelit sets also produce an artifact called flashlighting. The TV can still shut off a number of LEDs, which darkens the screen—however, if we use your example of white text, with edglit you'll also see faint shafts of light going from the text right to the edge of the screen.
