I just got the M801i-A3 and am noticing some weird waves when I'm about 5-10 degrees off center (only on the left side of the TV). Any idea what's going on here and if that's to be expected?

It probably has something to do with the backlight, but it's hard to say. I wouldn't accept that "normal" or not.

Is that a 2013 model or 2014?

It looks like you'll be able to stream 4K content when the P series launches. That is if you have the bandwidth.

Netflix begins 4K streams

Netflix 4K Streaming (House of Cards Season 2) Has Gone Live

Are there any early VUDU adapters lurking around? Before VUDU streamed on the fly you first had to download part of the title to a little black box and when it was determined that enough of the title was downloaded where you could play the title to the end without interruption then you were allowed to play the title. It seems to me that this again is the best solution for uncompressed 4K video playback from a streaming service. Of course the downside would be you would no longer be able to stream instantly. Then again such content will be very limited at the beginning and I dare say only the 70" screen would show much benefit to speak of for most viewing distances. In any event, the draw of the P series on me continues to be the promise of its overall PQ.

I'm sorry; you said that it was a M801i-A3. That's a 2013 model; the 2014 model numbers end in -Bx and the 2014 M series televisions have not shipped yet.

Sorry about that - just assumed it was the 2014 model since it was just purchased last week.

Here we go again... It is a new model announced at CES in 2014. It lacks FALD though which all the other 2014 models have. It's like the redhead stepchild of the 2014 lineup.

Correct. Check out Costco's website, which shows the 2013 80" M (edge lit, 3D) as well as the "interim" 2014 80" M (edge lit, non-3D). I'm waiting for the FALD 80" M, but there is a 2014 edge lit 80" M making the rounds...

It would seem that you are right. They didn't get the 3D version of that model, the M801d-A3, to market until October last year. This would not bode well for those interested in the 2013 M801i-B3.

I don't recall backlight uniformity being much of an issue in 2013. My E701i-A3 was not bad at all in this regard. I would consider the set pictured above to be defective, especially if you are only 10 degrees off-center. Even when viewed way off to the side, uniformity should not change while contrast and color can. Considering what a pain it is to lug this behemoth back to the store, I'm not sure I'd buy another of the same model.

You have just two posts but you know what's going on, there are 2 "80" models, one with 3D and the other without 3D, not to be confused with the FALD 80" model to come out later. Probably much later since Vizio went to the trouble of creating a non 3D version of their existing 80" model.

Will these be IPS or VA panels...I had an older LG LD450 37" LCD back from 2010-ish which actually had a pretty fine picture for the size and money and a 42" LG LK450 LCD that i picked up a year afterwards...the LD has noticeably less blur than the LK, to the point where the LK was just unecceptable.

Wrong - it wasn't announced anywhere and this incarnation of the 80 inch M-series is its own animal. They sourced (bid on) this panel to fill the void as a short run til the 2014 80 inch FALD panels are ready.

So guys looking forward to an 80 inch M-series that is full-array can continue to do just that!

Is his set full-array or edge-lit and 3D? No - so it wasn't announced anywhere...

As a clarifier - unless his set is edge-lit and 3D, then you are right. It was announced at CES (in January of 2013!)

Edge-lit without 3D.

It's in the 2014 Vizio CES press release that you can't bring yourself to read.

ps: It wasn't announced in 2013. It's a new 2014 model.

Show me in that PR (or anywhere else for that matter) where it states all the M-series are full-array accept for the 80 which is somehow edge-lit? You can't, because it doesn't exist.

They are VA panels. Pairing the VA panels naturally higher "static" contrast and FALD you get impressive image depth. The plasma people are hoping this pays off since most manufacturers are slowly getting out of the plasma game.

It seems a bit strange that the M801i would be the first new M Series model out, but I suppose its just a repackaging of the M801d. I guess that they don't have an 80" FALD M Series model planned for this year and no 80" P Series either.

Your reading comprehension isn't very good. I never claimed that the PR said the M801i-A3 was edge lit. I said the M801i was in the PR. We know that the M801i-A3 is edge lit. We also know the M801i-A3 is a new model released in 2014. You can continue to bury your head in the sand and pretend the M801i-A3 isn't a 2014 Vizio model, but it is.

So the press release lists a new model, a M801i for 2014. A M801i-A3 comes out in February of 2014 that is edge lit without 3D, and somehow not a 2014 model?

Forget about whether this is a 2014 model or not (it's a matter of semantics) and concentrate on the A3 destination. The press release is referencing the Full Array Local Dimming "B" models.

Why would I forget that? That's the whole point. Edge lit or not, it's a 2014 model. It's not a 2013 M series with 3D like Peter's been claiming.
