29ms on the 40W600B (known as 605 in the uk).

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/kdl40w605b-201404233740.htm

I wouldn't expect much difference on the 48", as it should be the same processing.

W653 had 32" with 33ms and 42" with 15ms (http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/input-lag ), so one can still hope the 48W605/600 is better than the 40".

HI folks,

I have been a long time Sony fan but recent Vizios look interesting especially since Sony seems to be focusing on the larger sized screens. I was wondering if anyone has compared the following models. I am mainly interested in display quality, product support and reliability between the two.. Also I tend to like the Matte screens for use during the day. Any opinions especially on the display technology used would be helpful.

Vizio M422i-B1
Sony KDL40W600B

Thanks Bob

Thanks for that, your pics and quote are what pushed me into getting off the fence getting one of these tvs!

I can tell you that the Sony W600B has a maybe semi-glossy screen. It's not matte like a Dell U2311h screen, but at the same time it's not super glossy like apple's 27" screen, just very light gloss. (I don't like heavy gloss, so that was a heavy consideration for me.) I've been looking at a lot of 39"-42" tvs lately and I don't think I've seen any with what I'd call a 'true' matte screen.

It seems to have very wide viewing angles so I'd say it's most likely VA (edit: the review Naylia put 2 posts up confirms it's VA). After playing some BF4 Conquest on it the Sony seems to have very little input lag, and very little little ghosting or motion blur.

I'd really recommend going to a place where you can actually see both of these in person. I just went to my local best buy although I initially went in looking for something a lot cheaper, but really liked this TV when I saw it in person.

How to reset the television to the original factory settings.
Article ID: 42994 | Last Updated: 11/04/2013
WARNING FOR LCD AND PLASMA TELEVISIONS: This procedure will reset the video calibration settings of the TV. If you paid to have your TV screen specially calibrated, you may want to first try performing a power reset instead. Otherwise, any special calibration settings will be lost.

Turn on the TV.
Wait approximately 40 seconds for the TV to completely start up.
On the TV remote control, press and hold the UP ARROW button.
While holding the UP ARROW button, press and release the POWER button on the TV set.
NOTES:

The button may be on the front, top or side of the TV. Newer model Sony TV have a Master Power or Energy Saving [FIG.1] switch on the side or back of the TV.
The TV may turn off and then back on.
Release the UP ARROW button.
Additional reset steps are available if you have a TV that was manufactured after 2012 and the above steps do not work.

IMPORTANT: If the procedure did not reset the TV to the factory default settings, perform a power reset .

Does anyone here own the W600B? Rtings.com gave this set the best uniformity for a gaming screen. Wasn't aware that this set was direct-lit. Maybe just what we need for our gaming room. My family is a little picky when it comes to flashlighting and DSE.

Direct lit panels *usually have better uniformity than edge lit panels .

I have a 2013 Sony Bravia KDL 40 R450 in the bedroom it's similar to the W600B (in fact the 600B replaced it) it has an direct light LED Samsung SPVA panel with 50 LED back light lamps on a 40" screen, uniformity is very good no clouding or flash lighting there is some DSE on a (solid white background no program .) No banding at all on test patterns. Nothing objectionable or noticeable at all during normal viewing very decent picture for the $$ .

At these price points. I prefer direct light VA or MVA panels they require less processing to get a decent picture.
Of all the similar price sets I looked at in Mar.2014 (plenty) IMO the Sony ,Samsung and Panasonic sets had the best pictures .

That's good to hear. BestBuy has the 40" inch model discounted for memorial day weekend. I know you have a different set, but does yours have any dark corners? The new FALD Vizio TVs all have this and it is a deal breaker for me (for a gaming TV anyway).

The corners aren't noticeably dark on mine (very very slight ) not an issue at all like many lower priced sets. On mine you would really have to look for it even on a solid test pattern that's the only time you would see it and just barely . I don't see anything on normal viewing.

I'm not sure which panel the USA W600B uses as opposed to EU W 605 model , the Sammie VA and AUO MVA panels are very good it's going to have one of those two . I wasn't all that impressed by the similar sized FALD Visio sets I thought they were OK but not for me. . (they are cheaper than Sony's also ) priced good but couldn't match the Sony color IMO .

I thought the Sony had the better picture overall (I'm picky as well my big set is a 2013 Sammie Plasma )

Comparing the 2013 Sony to a 2014 Visio E (B model ) series and 2013 M model Visios the Sony won hands down. The 2014 Sony's were not out when I bought this one in late Feb. 14 .

IMO Problem with FALD in all but the most expensive sets with lot and lots of dimming zones is going to be significant dimming and blooming some folks say it's better to keep it off on the Visio's .

Look at the Sony.Samsung and Panasonic and maybe Toshiba , they should very close ,the others not so much . Anytime you can get a discount on a Sony that's not a bad thing they will sell out real fast better be early !

Nobody has said the 2014 W600B series Sony's are any worse than the 2013 sets they replaced (might even be a little better ) that's good enough for me.

Nice to finally hear an opinion from someone not one the Vizio bandwagon :p

I'll be picking up the 40W600B this weekend then. Seems like the ideal set for a gamer.

The review below has a shot of the pixels on the panel. Looks like a VA panel, but I'm no expert.

I have been doing a lot of reading about the w800b and it appears to have the AUO AMVA5 panel, which if it does, would mean that this mid-teir tv is going to destroy any of the higher end offerings that don't use AMVA5 panels. The contrast should be well above 5K:1 on an AMVA5 panel.

Probably so those AUO panels are decent the Sammie SPVA panel in my set has a 5,000 : 1 panel spec good blacks and contrast not plasma black but good
I've thought about replacing this 2013 KDL 40R450A next year with a bigger W800B never know .

Go for it I'm sure it's going to be good let us know .

I didn't quite get all the 2014 E series B model Visio hype after seeing a few of them ( I wanted to see something after reading the Hype ) nothing remarkable there on the one's I saw .

My best guess is a Samsing SPVA panel .

So, I have the w800b. Well, the gimped-down-and-more-expensive version sold as the w790b in Canada.

Can someone please tell me where the frame dimming setting is, so I can turn it off? Couple of weeks ago, when the first set arrived (the one that had a how-the-hell-did-that-pass-QA amount of dead/stuck pixels) I was able to find and disable it. Now I'm at a loss as to where in the freaking menu that toggle is... confused.gif

I am thoroughly confused to the Sony modeling name conventions.

2014 Sonys: W600B, W800B, W850B (All USA Models?)

2014 Sony UK W829B = USA 800B or USA 850B (http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/kdl50w829b-201403023650.htm)?

What year models are the W802A and W805?

Is the 850A a 2013 Model?

I'm trying to buy a Sony, roughly 50" and about a $1,000 budget give or take a few hundred. I"m looking at PS4 gaming, hooking up my PC via HDMI for streaming and watching a ton of sports, like hockey, soccer, NFL, etc...

I understand Sony has top notch tv's for gaming due to their low input lag. Right now I'm looking at this TV: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-KDL50W800B-50-Inch-1080p-120Hz/dp/B00HPMCN7Y/ref=br_lf_m_1000610021_1_19_ttl?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=electronics&pf_rd_p=1774282462&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000610021&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0YYRPFGH2VEG3HJ0SQ3S

Amazon has 24 month no interest financing on it as well.

What are my options? Thanks!

Heh, So after research I gathered the following:

UK: W829B = US 800B

850A = 2013 model  (successor is 850B)

802A = 2013 model (successor is 950?)

805 no clue.

I could be wrong let me know. I also bought the 50W800B and it arrives tomorrow so I'm super excited!!!

If it's W805B it's likely 2014.

There's also W815. And W828 (maybe same as W829, different color). Yeah, great numbering system.

Some box pron to hold you guys over a few more days:

In regards to the numbering discussion above, the guy at the Sony Store told me they just print W80 on the box because the same box is used in many countries with only the third number varying.
