I have tried to notice a difference on or off and I can't find one.

I think the only time you'd see a noticeable improvement would be with a source capable of 4K 60Hz at 4:4:4 Chroma. An hdmi
2.0 video card on an HTPC, which does not exist yet, but should very soon, would really benefit from this.

I agree. I think the issue is the tv is ahead of its time. I know the owners love it. But most people are jarred at first at the thought of a curved set.

However I think this set will hold up particularly well against time. I mean just for the sets out this year. Next year will be better. But it always is the case anyway.

If anyone else has done a serious calibration with a quality Spectrophotometer (or such) I would be happy to share measurements and settings. I would like to document how much unit to unit variation exists among these sets. PM me.

85-8850 - saw on in plano,tx bb and its edge lite, not FALD.. but it looked great, playing nfl network. first time i saw a sammy 4k not playing 4k material... moved to top of my list over the 79-900b, where the blacks are worst than on their 65 units and the sammys... but with sony media player with more 4k content, i was hoping i would perfer the sony.. sucks these makes are making 4k material and devices proprietory..

I am in the same boat as you are, started considering 85hu8550 over 79x900b after seeing how bad the blacks were on the 79x900b. Did you see it play a bluray movie? How good were the blacks overall (including the bars on top and bottom)

To clarify, BB's in-store Samsung Experience rep said it was edge-lit. They use the same public info we all have. We need someone more senior at Samsung to counter what HD Guru says their senior Samsung exec told them. While I remain unconvinced it's direct-lit, it seems unlikely HD Guru would risk looking stupid and make this up. They clarified their original statement that a senior Samsung exec has confirmed direct-lit for the 85" only, contrary to the specs. Now that Samsung person may be the one who's wrong. But even if so it means best case two different Samsung people are contradicting each other. And I wouldn't trust in-store reps or customer service to have the most insider info...

My Money was ready for the 79inch Sony..........but After checking the black levels I ordered the 85 Samsung now. My First Samsung ever. Also the screen uniformity on the Samsung was better than on the Sony.

And I checked the black bars.....the black bars and also the black level of the 85 Samsung is for my opinion the same as the 65inch 900b.

The 79inch is more dark grey, but not as black as the 85 Samsung.

same here on results... but i currently on a number of sammys and they are good tvs.. my3 year old B8500 has as good blacks as i have ever seen on a LED unit, but its a FALD.. i didnt like the idea of dropping down too much on the black level going with the 79-900b

Next time you are there, ask the in-store Samsung rep who supplied the panel and whether it is 8 or 10-bit. See if he/she immediately answers with confidence.

In my experience these reps are bottom of the sales food chain, about on par with customer service. Have you ever been to CES and gone to one of the major booth and started asking the pretty reps for those companies about their products? They very eloquently regurgitate the bullet points on the brochures behind them. Ask them something not on it and they look like deer in the headlights, or at best refer you to the one employee at the both who has real knowledge of the product. Samsung and Sony hire entry-level people to fill these in-store jobs, give them a tad of training and access to the same information we can all find out publicly. Most of them don't know enough to spend time here and therefore end up knowing less than many of us. I'm not insulting them. Some of them are very nice and a few of them are smart and curious enough to know more than the rest. But even when they do, they find it out online and from talking to other knowledge customers. They do not have special access to non-public information.

I'm at the same places as the rest of you. The 85HU8550 has moved to the top of my list. I like what I saw, even if it turns out to be edge-lit. I just haven't talked myself into spending $10K yet, or haven't decided whether to wait out a price reduction.

When you watched NFL network, did the news ticker at the bottom ever blur on you? I tried updating my judder (5) setting but still have the same periodic blur. Also happens on other channels with a ticker...ESPN, CNN. I have DirecTV.

As good as HU9000 is, I'm still baffled that it won't support 23.976Hz and 59.94Hz refresh rates - all Sonys and Pannys I've had for the past 10 years supported these refresh rates.

Yes, speeding up the media to 24.000 and 60.000 with Reclock works fine, but only if the audio is not bitstreamed to AVR - and I bitstream almost everything to AVR. I guess I could try software audio decoding.

Displays: Samsung Curved 4K 65" UN65HU9000; Samsung 4K 28" U28D590D; ASUS 4K 32" ProArt PA328Q
Audio System: SVS Ultra 5.1 with SB-2000; Denon AVR-X4100W; Dolby Atmos 5.2.2

Did you try the blur setting instead of the judder?

I didn't observe a ticker during my tests but the weakest performance I saw during the calibration slides I tested was the motion handling. It definitely wasn't smooth in the torture tests the calibration slides use. I didn't mess with the blur and judder settings though, primarily because where they were set was producing no SOE on the TV which I was happy with.

that is where i have a bit of a luxury, getting a custom cabinet build long enough for a big tv and to hold my current equipment. and it will not be ready for a month or so. the 79 has already dropped, lets hope 85 sammy does

One can hope!

The cynic in my though would point out that the SOny dropped to match the UPP price of the competing-sized Samsung. The problem is this 85" has very little competition, only really the LG which has a similar street price but a higher MSRP. But the LG is not in most major retail showrooms, at least so far.

No ticker should judder at all. Did you set blur 10, judder 5?.
Video processing in an AVR can cause judder. Turn it off.

what is the latest on any motion/judder issues with the 8550. I read early on owners have issues in this area and that initially had me worried about the 8550. whats its current state, owners still having issues with motion or other things like backlight uniformity isues..

75HU8550 vs 78HU9000

I need some help. I have read and continue to read through these threads and I'm no closer to a decision between these two sets. Both fit in a cabinet I have; The 75 perfectly and the 78 with some molding removed. I know the 78 has a few more features (and of course the curve). Personally I don't love the curve and there is the conundrum. Go with the 78 for the extra features or save some money and get the 75. Is there really a big difference between these two? Any help is appreciated.

I have the curved one and love it. The curved one has much better uniformity compared to all the non-curved 4K 2014 display models I've seen in stores (they all had some degree of banding and faster color washout when looking at an angle). Plus the curve is sexy.

Displays: Samsung Curved 4K 65" UN65HU9000; Samsung 4K 28" U28D590D; ASUS 4K 32" ProArt PA328Q
Audio System: SVS Ultra 5.1 with SB-2000; Denon AVR-X4100W; Dolby Atmos 5.2.2

Hello everyone, I know I'm new here and I hope I'm not bringing up something you all already know. I've read all 115 pages and didn't see anything about this. If you search on the Netflix app on the TV for 4k, they have test shows on it running 4k 60fps. Some pretty good looking stuff, I think it's 3 videos being tested, they only show a Netflix logo, no title or picture. The videos are all the same 1 at 60fps, one at 24fps and one showing 5994 mp. Not sure what the last one is.

I own the 60HU8550 and love and enjoy every bit of it. From picture quality to design I'm completely satisfied with it.

Netflix uhd videos cannot be found by searching 4k. They are all in the uhd section. It can only be found using the netflix app inside the tv.

The all just say 2160p when I hit info button.

A few 4k test videos can be found by searching for 4k within the App. They don't have cover art, simply A red Netflix screen and they are only tests. For some reason Ghostbusters II is not in the UHD section though. I randomly found it just browsing around, so I wonder if there are others.
