That link is out of date. It was one of several stories based on the initial press release and assumption the 85" would share identical specs with the previous smaller models. That same site subsequently posted a story saying Samsung officials had confirmed the 85" was in fact direct-lit contrary to the previous information about being edge-lit.

If HDGuru is to be believed, any story that came out prior to that and the Samsung website are outdated and incorrect. They were heavily challenged on this claim and say they went back to Samsung and stand by it as confirmed.

This is perfectly plausible. Samsung's website and press releases are managed by the marketing department and have a track record for being wrong. As for it costing more if it were direct lit, perhaps, but JVC is releasing an 85" FALD this year with an MSRP of $8K and inevitably an even lower street price. Vizio is releasing a 70" FALD for a fraction of that cost.

The jury is still out on whether it is edge-lit or direct-lit. But links to articles based on the original press release or Samung's website won't settle it. We need a major review site to get a Samsung corporate official on record confirming or denying what HDGuru is attributing to them.

True, hopefully assJack1 can shed some light on this as well. It should be pretty easy to tell.

The 50HU8550 just dropped by like 200 bucks. I'm thinking about picking one up. I was going to wait for the Vizio P series but im starting to have the feeling that they are not going to be as good as we hoped.

Ps remind me i should look for a box that has a TS or TH for a Samsung Panel?

Seen this thread while trying to find out information out on my new 8550 i picked up today. I have run into some things that i suppose i could read about, but after browsing through the manual i didn't see much.

How does one turn off "pop up blocker"
Can you install such a thing as "adblock" within the web browser? So forgot that youtube videos have ads on them these days...i liked forgetting until realizing how many they are after browsing on my tv.

Can you watch streaming online movies from movie4k, solarmovie etc? I have a sony 4k blueray player that allows web search too, what about that?

I have 2 speakers and a sub. The speakers connect to the sub while the 1 speaker has a mini 3.5 jack that i connected to the back of the TV. I changed the audio source but no sound. I am assuming even if used a female to R/L RCA to the TV i would have same result? Just thought since i have these Klipsch 2.1 speakers i might as well use them or sell them.

So, as far as that I am learning my TV. I need to learn more of how to use it and and appreciate it. I feel like upgrading was a waste of $2300. I've never had a TV before..since like my childhood days.

thanks for help.

To be honest, I do not think Samsung or Sony are shaking in there boots, but I guess we will see if they should be.
Out of curiosity at a minimum how many zones would a 50" to say 65" inch need? I was trying to hold out for the P series but looking at the picture quality in stores vs Samsung or Sony Im thinking about going 50hu8550.

I powered it up to see if it worked. It did. Now, due to work obligations I will not power it up until the end of the week. It's just sitting there on the floor, unfortunately. Sucks actually.

Ya, the samsung just had a big cost drop about 2-3 weeks ago, so its finally hitting retail now i picked up a 50" around 17XX CND mark, 4k is basically at the mark of 1080p panels last year its great and bad all at the same time it makes me want to replace everything in my home with 4k sets. if your on the fence for buying now is a good time i doubt you'll any more of a cost drop on these units until they become clearence.

Had the 50" set for a few days now. Calibrated it with Video Essentials BR and things look pretty good. Only thing is, I don't know if the issue I'm seeing is macroblocking, or something else. Don't know if it's from poorly compressed HD video (Dish Network and OTA) or? I'm attaching a picture and hopefully it's clear enough to tell. In the image, the left side should be black, but you'll notice quite a bit of blue and the same for the red on the right side. While the scene plays out, these distortions are moving and quite noticeable.

This problem seems to only happen in low light scenes and mostly with darker colors, but it affects lighter colors as well. I didn't really notice it with my previous Panasonic plasma. However, on this set it's quite noticeable when it happens.

Thanks!

I have had my 65HU8700 rolling for a few weeks now, I'm pretty happy with it. No calibration yet, and I'm not totally satisfied with my picture settings (all going through Denon AVR-S900W) but 4k content is amazing, the Netflix app streams 4k no problem, and apparently I get the content pack from Samsung for free - hopefully that shows soon.

Running these settings:
Smart LED control: High
Mode: Movie
Backlight: 15
Contrast: 75
Brightness: 24
Sharp: 20
Color: 37
Dynamic contrast: Low
Picture option: Warm2
Gamma: +3

I'm not completely happy with this setup. Any other 8700 folks have a better set of parameters?

What type of source does this appear on? Is this your satellite or a blu-ray, or other content? If it's 1080i/p, this should be a virtually "crisp" delineation. If it's upconverting a SDVD from 480i, then I'd say the distortion is likely (on an earlier disc) because upconversion will never create a 4K image from this content.

Where did you get the set from? My guess is it's bad and you should switch it out for a new one while you can. The picture should be crystal with anything but 480 sources.

This pic is from Dish Networks Fox HD (24: Live Another Day). I'm assuming it's 1080i. It also has done it in many dark scenes on Dish's HBO Game of Thrones. With a 1080P BR, I noticed it on Outland, but I think it's a crappy transfer to begin with. I'm going to try the Director's Final Cut of Blade Runner as it has many dark scenes.

I got the set from Amazon.

Okay, just checked out Blade Runner BR and I noticed something odd. Seems the right and left sides of the screen are brighter than the center. I know it's edge lite, but I don't think you're supposed to have brightness differences. I'm attaching a pic. This might be part of my issue with other images in dark scenes. To think of it, most of the image distortions in dark scenes are usually on the sides and not the center of the screen.

Anyway, look at the image. Especially the bottom right at the base of the column. Also note that the left and right sides have more of a greenish tint to it. I also have a pic of Rachel in her black dress. The center and left shoulder are jet black, but the right shoulder is washed out a bit. It is hard to take a picture of it, but you might be able to detect it.

So now I'm looking for color patterns to display to see if the color is uniform across the entire screen. They should be perfect, right?

Thanks!

Thanks, please let us know your thoughts once you have it setup or if you can try a blu-ray on it before hand. It looks amazing in the store.

Okay, this is hard to get a picture of. Seems the camera is not able to capture or it's filtering it somehow. This image, we all know it, is not displayed evenly by my 8550. It is red in the center and the right and left sides are more of an orange. I'd say about 25% of the sides are orange and the main 50% of center is correct. I am quite certain that this shouldn't be happening with such an expensive and well reviewed set. If it is a problem with the set I need to know so I can arrange for a replacement before that window closes.

Thanks

Yes. You just have to purchase it with the first 30 days after you buy the tv.

As far as the Uhd pack see post #3476 in this thread. You need to scan a copy of your receipt(jpeg). Also use the serial number on the tv and not the box. The tv has 1 extra letter/number at the end.

Can speak for most of it but as far as the youtube video why not just download 4k videodownloader
http://www.4kdownload.com/products/p...ideodownloader

Download the video in 4k then put on a thumb drive or external hard drive and watch

How do you identify if you got "Panel 1H01"? Can this be done upon delivery, meaning is this clearly marked on the outside of the box?

Is this the panel that many of you have that has the least amount of issues?

To think of it, most of the image distortions in dark scenes are usually on the sides and not the center of the screen.

Anyway, look at the image. Especially the bottom right at the base of the column. Also note that the left and right sides have more of a greenish tint to it. I also have a pic of Rachel in her black dress. The center and left shoulder are jet black, but the right shoulder is washed out a bit. It is hard to take a picture of it, but you might be able to detect it.

So now I'm looking for color patterns to display to see if the color is uniform across the entire screen. They should be perfect, right?

Thanks!
I'd say that TV needs to be replaced. It shouldn't do that. You are getting blue blacks. Mine is very even and the blacks are black.

You guys sure do have your share of problems with these sets. I was about to pull trigger on a HU9000 but have decided to hold off for superior consistent PQ of OLED. 4K sets soon. Although I wind up watching campy fare such as Sharknado! so it may be a waste.
