Hi

Tempted to buy this TV. But I cannot get a clear answer on if the TV can play YouTube 4K clips natively (i.e. in the YouTube app). Can anyone who owns the set actually confirm that they can watch YouTube 4K content in app or not?

Many thanks

I don't think YouTube app on the tv play at native 4k, heard they use different kind of video codec compression called something vp9 and the tv is hevc. If you want to play YouTube clip on tv native 4k I think you have to download it from your computer then use the USB key to play it on the tv,

If true then that's rubbish. As there is so little 4K content this seems like a major oversight... Who designs this stuff? That's really put me off buying the TV... No way am I going to download each video from a channel subscription to USB.

You are not going to buy a great TV because you can't watch 4K YouTube videos from the TV's YouTube app?

Are you serious?!

Yes it's a major factor. I subscribe to lots of channels, several of which are in 4K which I watch on my 4K monitor now.

Regardless of that, I would like a TV that supports 4K YouTube as rather like Netflix you need a tv that supports a platform which has demonstrated support for 4K. This is not a mature technology. I have some confidence that YouTube will expand its 4K output (split between content creators adding more 4K as the cameras are now cheap enough AND YouTube possibly selling more video content though it).

So, yes, in summary I would like a TV that supports the only 2 platforms that deliver 4K today.

My 8550 TV's Youtube app does not play in 4K. Some of the 4K movie trailers won't play at all.
You can watch Youtube in 4K on a PC connected to it.

Edit. I think my net was bugged at the time. 4K's seem to be playing fine.

If you press the Info button on the remote does it show you the resolution being played like it does when viewing Netflix?

So many contrasting opinions about this, all very weird.

Just tried some 4K vids on the 8550 again. They had to have been playing at 4K. They were extremely clear. The info button does nothing. I can't find any way to show what rez is playing.
Still some 4K movie trailers won't play, like Elysium.

On the F9000 you can get resolution via "tools/settings/information" while a 4k video is playing from the smart hub/usb hard drive. Maybe this works while watching internet streaming.

I have a 58 inch Samsung plasma and the HU9000 both connected to Comcast X-1 boxes. The HU9000 upscaled picture is clearly superior. It is far superior on channels with less compression. Highly compressed channels still look better but the difference is not as great.

So has everyone/owners come to the conclusion that these TVs are not really made for watching sports, specifically hockey? This is what I would primarily be watching.

I'm a huge hockey fan. The playoffs for me were unwatchable b.c of the judder. It is slight, but it is very real and there.

its funny you asked me if i'm owning a this tv, of course i am, i'm not here to bs and gives false info, in my case i watch netflix 4k house of card and its look good, but then i try 4k on you tube its look terrible unless i download it and put on my usb then i'll look like 4k. Just remember one thing asking these stuff you have to be aware of fan boys and haters, they're also subjective thing, each person have different point of view. why don't you just go buy it see it for yourself if you don't like it you can alsway bring it back.

UPDATE: as some of you said their tv working fine in 4k on native youtube app, most that seen is hu8550, mine i hu9000 and i didn't noticed it work before but after thursday morning firmware update i can finally watch native youtube with 4k, the firmware also add : netflix black cinema bar and auto motion plus custom.

I'm on FIOS and using my own HTPC. For me on certain channels that use little compression the picture is slightly more sharper than my old plasma. If the signal is full of a lot of compression then not so good.

I noticed that as of today the Samsung site is finally offering the 78 inch model 9000 for sale. Such was not true just two days ago. They claim 10-14 day delivery schedule and include the media player free. The price is $7999

Thanks for replying. Glad to hear that it does seem to work.

I noticed this for the first time watching basketball on ESPN yesterday - both the ticker at the bottom of the screen and side shots when the players were running down the court.  I'm guessing no setting changes will fix this?  Debating whether to return this tv or not..

How did the remote session go.  Did they find a fix for the "skipping"?

I found if I set the Auto Motion Plus to Clear it stops the skip.  The Geeks are going to replace a board next Saturday as they feel it should not skip on any of the settings.

We were in Amsterdam a week in April.  Had a wonderful time.

Nothing fixed it. That was the first place I noticed it, ESPN. Then watching hockey on CNBC and it just continued from there. I could not fix it not matter what I tried.

Remote session did not solve the problem yet, had a long talk to 2 Samsung techs to explain what was happening.
Then i got a lady on the phone and see runs the tech department so i hope all will be cleared.
She asked me if i can make a movie of the TV when this happens, i told here it will be difficult as i can watch for hours and nothing happens, and then 2 -3 times in a few minutes.
So its still in research.......

I will try your setting to see if the skips are gone, if so i think Samsung can work from that setting to see the differents with other settings. I do find smooth the best for movies and tv, but lets see what this setting wil do.

One more strange thing with the 65U8500, i tried ARC but can not get it to work, and this is not rocket science.
A 1.4 HDMI on the ARC slot on the One Connect box and the HDMI to my ARC slot on the receiver.
I put the receiver on ARC enabled but no sound.......
Tried the same on my previous Sharp and no problem.

That annoying auto-dimming feature has a name, CE Dimming. It's a hard-coded feature in these TVs which deactivates the backlight when the image gets all-black. Until about 2012, this feature could be disabled in the service menu, but not anymore. It also used to be disabled when in Movie mode, but that is no longer the case either.

Even in dark environments, I don't like Movie mode. It gives the screen a 'foggy' grayish look. No matter how much I adjust the colors and white balance, the colors seem muted and cloudy. I calibrated my screen in Natural Mode, which unfortunately disables the Advanced Settings menu, which has color space, white balance and gamma. I'm very happy with the results though.

I'm picking up a Spears and Munsil disc in a week or so, but I have the picture settings as follows:

Picture Mode: Natural
Backlight: 15
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 52 (CE Dimming is disabled at this brightness level. At 51, the backlight still shuts off)
Sharpness: 0 (Doesn't seem necessary, even with broadcasts)
Color: 50
Tint: 50/50

Picture Options:
Color Tone: Standard
Digital Clear View: Off
MPEG Noise Filter: Off
HDMI Black Level: Low
Auto Motion Plus: Custom (LED Clear Motion On)
Smart LED: Off
