Toshiba 37AV502R Settings

Greetings Colleagues,

This is an old television that I updated using AVS Forum HD 709 Disk, APL Clipping Pattern, which is the 2nd pattern that comes after the Black Clipping Pattern, and is described as an APL for use in a "typical viewing environment." As recommended, the brightness was adjusted where bar 19 was barely visible. Calibration patterns used were full field patterns from the Gamut Calibration Disk from this forum.

Contrast was reduced to 88 to eliminate tinting at higher settings. Primary adjustments were to blue drive, green drive and gamma setting. Used color temperature setting of medium.

For your consideration, I have attached graphs of gamma curve, rgb levels, and temperature. No changes were made in service menu. Settings are close to D65, but average gamma levels out around 1.9 which may be designed that way.

I searched the forum but did not find any other settings thread for this tv.

Readjusted Settings Using 21% Red Color Method:

Greetings Colleagues,

Settings were readjusted using 21% Red method which showed that the color red was slightly over saturated. Previous method used blue filter method. Also, backlight reduced to 74 (50 ftL maximum light output) due to wife complaining about the picture being too bright in dark viewing environment. Changes are in bold.

HDMI

Service Menu Adjustment
red gain 118
green gain 100
blue gain 73

User Menu Adjustments
contrast 88
backlight 74 (- Readjusted to 79, Wife settled on 55 ftL maximum light output)
dynalight off
brightness 61

tint -2 [1 initial setting using blue filter may look better]
sharpness 6 (changed to 8 due to my seating distance)
Advanced:

Standard Mode for Day Viewing, Gamma @ 2.0

Greetings Colleagues,

I have adjusted the settings for day viewing with color temperature @ 8000K and the gamma level set at 2.0 @ 0% ire window, see gamma graph below (as recommended by some members in this forum). To achieve this level I had to ignore the usual brightness calibration patterns and adjust the brightness setting to where gamma is measured at 2.0 @ 0% ire using field patterns. The contrast setting was lowered to remove blue tinting from the grey scale white pattern. Backlight was then adjusted for 50 ftL @ 100% ire field window pattern. Service menu also had to be slightly adjusted to obtain the 8000K color temperature.

Standard Mode day viewing with gamma level at 2.0 @ 0% ire.

Service Menu Adjustment Cool
red gain 94
green gain 76
blue gain 178

contrast 58 (lower to this number due to tinting)
backlight 94
dynalight off
brightness 68
color 31
tint 1
sharpness 4
Advanced:
dynamic contrast off
static gamma -5
color temperature cool B drive 8, g drive -3
