Because Sony doesn't make it's own panels and the panel they could source from a third party in that size was and IPS from LG. I don't know if it's the same panel as the 850B but it could be -- good question.

The problem isn't passive 3D per se versus active. 4K passive 3 sets can look great (like last year's LG). It's either SOny's implementation this year or LG's panel. We'll know when feedback of the 79: LG come in for the 3D.
