As I said in a previous post, I believe that HDTVtest were using a crude test card designed to check for on/off lines (which was the problem with the original 55" A), and NOT full resolution in terms of luminance. The review then says this: "However, there existed some vertical high-frequency rolloff (i.e. the alternating black and white horizontal single-pixel lines were indistinct rather than crisply delineated), causing the Sony’s 3-D images to be edged out by those seen on Samsung’s HU7500 and HU8500 UHD TVs in terms of outright detail and sharpness."

Trust me, I've tried it myself with a 1080p test card. The 55" B does NOT pass 1080p vertical detail, which is exactly the "high-frequency rolloff" mentioned in the HDTV review.

And people can keep quoting the tech specs till they're blue in the face but the following (taken from the UK Sony website) is hardly conclusive:

LCD3D, SimulView™, LED Backlight
3D Super-ResolutionYES
Auto 3D Depth AdjustmentYES
3DYES
Simulated 3DYES
SimulView™YES

So no cross talk but motion blur for fast paced content seems bad.

Anything I can do to alleviate that?
Yes, the motion judder is quite obvious in 3D on my 55", it's probably due to the speed of the shutters in the glasses. It's not a huge problem, and it's still better than turning on the Motionflow which generates huge amounts of crosstalk.

Welp... I'm off the fence now. I got tired of waiting to ever see a Vizio P Series 70" in the wild, as the local Best Buy doesn't show any coming their way for the foreseeable future, and after yesterday's hour-long demo-diving experience at Best Buy, I just ordered the 65X900B.

The local independent hi-fi shop (yes, they do still exist!) that I bought my 70" XBR2 from in 2006 beat the Best Buy Mover's Coupon price and threw in the wireless subwoofer: $3,440 + tax.

It should be here Tuesday.

Woot.

Good luck and congrats to your decision, i was doing the same actually i ordered Vizio P55 before came out and after reading first few reports from the owners, quality and everything else raised a question about what was i doing (that order was my first Vizio ever). When i saw Sony 55X900B at best buy without 4K feed i was very happy what i was seeing, amazing colors and contrast.
Anyway mine came today and didn't get a chance to setup and look at that beauty yet.

If anyone trying to decide between various Sony 4K sets has not been to Best Buy and spent some time with the Sony interactive 4K kiosk, you REALLY need to do so. I spent about an hour at one today, digging a bit deeper than I had previously, as I hadn't realized the extent of the demo material available.
Now that's the way these should be displayed.........

I have the XBR79X900B and I have motion blur when watching football. Can U tell me what, if anything, I can do to reduce the motion blur. It occurs when players are running, or when camera is panning the field and when they are showing slow motion replay.

Honestly not sure.

Am starting to see motion blur more and more.

In 3D, Lego movie was impossible to watch, have sent a mail to Sony

Your day time settings are very similar to mine.
I have Picture.. Cinema 2
Backlight..2
Bright..50
Motion Flow..I have "Standard" but True Cinema works well too
Other than those differences, all my other settings are exactly like yours.
I think these settings really brings out the best in this set.
BTW..I use the same settings on HDMI 2, for watching upscaled Blu Rays from my Oppo, and they look terrific.

Yeah the settings really do the set justice.

You had any luck with 3D, the motion flow in fast action is not great

To be honest,I never got into 3D, so I've never bothered with those settings at all.
Sorry about that.

My 900B coming tomorrow and i can't wait to set it up.
Now i'm trying to see my AVR also doing an upscaler or not, other member "400MHz man" told me that let TV to upscaler i'm trying to figure but i was
going to ask anyway if AVR upscales the picture and also TV does the same what happens.
Well sad thing happened!!! Maybe not!
I received my 55x900B Friday and after 2-3 hours use developed a blue line from top of the screen to the bottom and it stayed there no matter what i changed input to.
This was like 10-12 inches from the left side of the panel and thin blue line maybe inch thick or so.
Bought this directly from Sony no third parties or anything, called Sony they checked a few things and tests and they told me they have to send technician to fix the TV.
Very disappointed first with the Sony's quality and second customer service telling me that someone has to come and fix the TV.
Anyway i said no, i don't want a deal with this with brand new item and told them to take this back which is scheduled for Tomorrow. If they told me we will exchange the unit i might
accepted but anyway hassle to put everything back in to the original box etc.
Maybe everythings worked for the better hopefully, i have a LG 55EC9300 Curved Oled TV now and picture quality, black levels and contrast ratio, colors are just amazing, i have to say wowww,
what a difference OLED tv makes. Paid almost same price 3K Sony was $2800. Yes i won't have the UHD but i can be very happy with what i'm seeing with this new TV.
Seems like OLED is the future and i have no doubt about that and 4K Oled TV's are probably will start price point 10K or so until those pieces coming down to 3-4K price range we probably looking 2017-18.

Do you set the scene setting to SPORTS?

Turn motion off completely. Yeah sports sucks when using motion. Or ells try clear or clear plus. Standard and smooth well make motion look weird.

DirecTV resolution settings?

Dumb question #2 ,822:

I'm receiving my 65X900B this week and I have a question regarding upscaling, specifically as it relates to settings on the DirecTV Genie.

The Genie has a "Native" ON/OFF setting, as well as checkboxes for various resolutions. I believe that different combinations will result in channel resolutions either being passed through at their native resolution, or being upscaled to 1080P before output.

Since the X900B scales everything to 4K, my assumption is that I should pass the native signal to the TV rather than scaling to 1080P and then sending the signal to the TV to be scaled again. Is that an accurate assessment?

If so, what combination of the above Genie settings accomplish this? I'm seeing conflicting interpretations online.

What experiences have other X900B owners seen with respect to DirecTV Genie resolution settings? Any impact?

Thank you.

At 55" better blacks are much, much more important than 4K over 2K. You made the right choice.

Thanks Tedd, i think so too. I'm coming from a high end plasmas so i'm used to good black levels and contrast but with LED i knew i was giving up on that (doesn't matter which brand) but for 4K i thought it's ok. Now i'm seeing it that it's not okay OLED is really something else, this is my first LG ever but every day i'm loving it more and i'm glad i made this purchase.

I have had the sony xbr 79" 900b for a month now and thanks to this forum I was very prepared with what I got. I actually have the 65" in my bedroom so I have a very good comparison. The blacks are definitely better with the 65" hands down but as long as your not watching letter box its not terrible on the 79". Many of you stated that the 3d was unwatchable on the 79" but maybe its the viewing angle on mine cause It has been very good for me. I attached a pic cause I always enjoy seeing the final set up of other peoples theater or entertainment rooms and the hard work that goes into it.

At 55" u don't really need 4k. Even thought there is a difference when your up close. But black level is everything in a tv if your looking for best picture. For now my 65900b is good enough untill 4k oled comes down in price. Im still impress with how good the black level look on the 65900b.

Cool setup with the b&ws.
3d is bad on fast action scenes, otherwise is reasonable (still can see the horz lines on light backgrounds).
Give it a shot on the the life of pi bray, title 17 (flying fish).

Thanks I'll try it out. I watched journey to the center of the earth 2 and I didn't see much ghosting. The b&w took me forever to get in white.

I challenge anyone to put 2 55" sets side by side, one with a full hd panel and one with a 4K panel, play a 4K content and tell me if there's no difference. it's definitely false that a 55" 4K TV has the same picture quality than a Full HD TV. except if you have a sight problem.. sure, if you look at them from 30 feet I'm agree, but the point is another one..
I can accept that someone tells me that 4K difference is more noticeable on a 65" and over, but say that there aren't differences respect a Full HD panel on 55" size it's simply wrong.
