Here's some pics after I punched in old David Katz settings last night... I bumped up the backlight to about 4 and the contrast enhancer and black level to medium... didn't really need it just added a bit more to the black level.

If anyone still questions the upscale ability of this set keep in mind this is actually 720P. Also if you haven't already seen it, I suggest you download the Suicide Girls UK Holiday... for the soundtrack of course it's free just google it.

Just had my 79X900B delivered today. Haven't really had a chance to do much with it yet but it does look rather imposing when wall mounted. Hopefully I can get some rudimentary calibration done on the weekend.

Congrats please let use know how you like the new tv. I've read it may be an ips panel and I was worried about the black levels. 79 inch passive 3dtv. That's a dream come true to me.

OMG, please let us know how the passive 3D is if you get a chance. A pic of this TV out in the real world would be sooo nice.

Passive 3D on a 79" screen, that must be amazing

Sorry guys. Its been a busy evening as I have guests arriving tomorrow. Not much time to play.

My brief initial impression is that the picture is fantastic. I found that using custom mode with Warm2 color temp gives you a picture that's extremely well calibrated out of the box. Black levels are excellent, and I've got a hard time believing this is an edge lit LCD. I'm also very happy with the motion handling. Much better than all of the other large displays I've looked at. Sony really has done a great job from what I can see.

I can't really comment on 3D unfortunately. This display is mounted in our kitchen / family room area and isn't really for movies. We have a dedicated theater room for that. In this space we watch a lot of sports, news and the kids use their PS4 so that's what this TV will be tasked with.

I will try to post a pic or two tomorrow.

An interesting choice of a TV for that kind of use IPS panel should match well to usage in bright room.

Pre-delivery check, no pass. Seems to be a lot of issues with Sony panels, they might want to package their sets better.

Good reason to pay for delivery and setup. You do not want this to be your $5k paper weight. The box looked perfect.

So much for the 100,000 hour lifespan

That's terrible. I'm so sorry, man. You'd think a "premium brand" like Sony would not let this kind of stuff slide. I would be livid

Don't feel bad, it was caught before delivery. Just an example of how fragile these sets are and why the extra few dollars for white glove delivery might be worth it. The box does not have to be damaged for a set to be damaged during delivery.

There were also a lot of broken panels in European TVs. My unit was all good on this front. I think transport people put them sideways to two wheel trolleys opposed to two guys carrying it like it should.

I have only spent about an hour or so with the set, so take it for what you will, but I haven't noticed any significant banding. I am coming over from plasma, so I'm a bit sensitive to it and it's one of the reasons I've stayed away from LCD in the past. I tried pretty hard this morning with the Dubai fireworks 4K demo and I can't notice any. I suspect it is there if you look hard enough though.

I am sorry for the quality of the pictures. Taken in a hurry this morning.

With the wedge shape, it's actually quite thick at the bottom.

Sound quality is excellent. I've decided to get rid of he receiver and speakers I had in this room and just go for the clean look of the TV on the wall. The black version of the wireless subwoofer is backordered for a couple of weeks in my area but the set sounds good enough on its own that I'm not concerned.

I'm honestly not sure what else I could've gone with. I wanted a large fixed panel. Plasma is a non-starter above 60". The OLEDs I looked at are all too small and I'm not convinced the tech is ready for prime time. I needed about 45 degrees of off-axis viewing and the LCD panels from other manufacturers don't seem to do nearly as well. The Samsungs in particular seem to fall apart after about 20 degrees. The larger Sharps are a little better but not much to be honest.

I suspect the 950Bs are better, but in my viewing environment I doubt the differences would be appreciable. The 85" 950B just didn't make sense from a value standpoint in this environment. So it really came down to the 79X900B vs waiting another 6-12 months.

Going to the airport then hopefully I'll get to enjoy the world cup games today.

World Cup is the best banding Test. I am not sure if the dubai fire works is good for a banding Test.

Deke6, if you have the time, can you download the following 2 images, copy them to a USB stick, and view them full-screen on your 79X900B?

> Backlight Uniformity Test

> Edge Light Test

The first will show if there any backlight uniformity issues by displaying a simple 25% grey image.

The second will show if there are any edge light issues in dark areas on the left and right by displaying a white column in the center and black columns at the left and right edge.

Tell us what you see, and it would be great if you could post a picture or two with the results.

Thanks in advance!

I think Vizio has cheap big screens with local dimming and they have been getting good reviews(m and e series) Of course I don't have any first hand experience with those because they are not available in Europe. No doubt x900 is great TV for any use

If I have some time later tonight I'll try to get it done for you. I'll have to wait until it's dark enough and disconnect the bias lighting to give an accurate representation.

The IPS panel should be a huge improvement in off angle viewing from the 65". Nice photos, looks very good.

Close up shots during World Cup has major lag, I haven't checked in other sets around the house so I'm not sure if it's the 900b itself or a combination of the camera being used and the display set.

Wow so you're the very 1st on our forum with the 79X900B hmmmm? That is a blessing and a curse cuz many are interested in this set and you just made yourself the go to person for a short season until more members get them in.

I know you mentioned this tv is a "secondary" not being your main home theater unit. You must be very very well off to afford a 8g tv as a second! lol What do you use as your first set as your home theater?

Many here are curious about the 3D on this set and you said more or less you were not using it for that, and that was that. But c'mon really? The set comes with 2 pairs passive 3D glasses and a blue ray 3D movie rental is easy enough.

Roles reversed you would be asking us many similar questions so kindly oblige...In a month or so no one will bug you anymore as others will have their own for show and tell and the initial newness of this model will be passe'.

Observing the rhythm of your prior writings we can assume you will not be getting this professionally calibrated then, yes / no / maybe or indifferent?

Thanks for your time Mr. Deke!

What we will be is not what we are, what we are is not what we were...therefore hoping in all things becomes possible.
