Just for the fun of it I looked up if it would be possible to import the 55Z8 to the US. The 55Z8 sells for about $1450 and shipping would be $300 by EMS and the cross shipper wants a $150 sales fee for a total of around $1900 US. This would put the 55Z8 into the same price range as the Sony 55W950B. https://www.buysmartjapan.com/index.php/en-us/product-index-K0000579672-f27b3c0a8003b3d890c1f7ee2e50986c.html#header

I think power and video standards are the same in Japan and the US. The built in over the air tuner wouldn't work and I would guess that all the streaming services wouldn't work. As long as you would use a cable box and something else for streaming it should work ok.

Importing the European model would be more problematic since they have different power standards and their video is 50Hz.

The carton doesn't state it but the Toshiba web site does state it has local dimming.

No they don't, but please, keep misleading people.

The spec sheet for the Z8 (55") says:

LEDエリアコントロール (LED Area Control) and has the dot next to it, indicating that the set has it.

The spec sheet for the J8 (55") says:

LEDエリアコントロール (LED Area Control) and does not have the dot next to it, indicating the set doesn't have it.

Further, the J8 still has the CEVO engine, but only a single core version, not the Duo version.

if you have a problem with moderation, take it up with the moderators via PM, publicly posting will not help your cause. The same goes for when you report someone. Report them and leave it at that, posting a comment like the one you did WOULD be considered an "attack".

I said the J8 had the single CEVO and the z8 had the CEVO DUO. If you click on the please tell me more tab on the J8 they have the same pic as the Z8 for increasing blacks.

though the don't mention control over indivisual LEDs. They are playing loose with the term "Local Dimming". The L7400U is the J8.

When I imported a Canon printer from Japan, I needed to by a power inverter for the 220V. Wow they have it around $1100 now.

Japan uses 100V. You live in Europe where the voltage is 220V?

Why says the polnish test it has 6 LED Dimming Zones? And when you look at the pictures they have different "dimming" below.

Just got off the phone w/ Toshiba Tech support. They took my call since I have a serial #.

They did state the TV has local dimming.

They state that the 55" unit has 8 zones

I'm not sure what you're asking. The L7453 has local dimming, just like the Z8 and the L7400U.

So just 504 less than the marketing people told you it has. And, ~120 less than proyal was claiming. tongue.gif

Looks like I'll finally be able to get this TV in June, going to order it from B&H.com which come to a total of about $1,350. Not too bad me guesses, but a little more than expected than the $599 i planned on paying for the Vizio E 50"
but that set is a no-go no with it's puny 300nits..... it's no less than 500 for me.

There is some doubt that the Toshiba product page and press release (and their shills at CES) are telling the truth. I just wanted to know if all of the marketing terms they bandy about in that literature are present on the carton. It's mildly concerning that all but "Quantum Black Local Dimming" are there.

I notice that you're in Vancouver (presumably BC, CA, not WA, USA). Extra shipping and/or VAT? For me in San Diego, it's $1044 from B&H, no tax, no shipping.

I think that is what we are going to find out in the end. Manufactures have always been secretive with LED and zone counts. I think this is going to turn into another pseudo "local dimming" like the Samsungs. It would be strange they would add local dimming to a cheaper model when it is identical to the J8 in almost every other way. It is like how Cnet claims Toshiba 240 Clearscan just quadruples its native 60hz.

All of this educated guesswork is tiresome. What we need are some professional reviews by reputable experts to tell us what's what. At this point my plan is to wait for the 55" Vizio P-Series; the 55" M-Series should be out soon and might outperform this in every aspect except backlight brightness.

You're telling me. But i'm just as bad, what, with my repetitious posts about input lag. tongue.gif
Anyways, one of the owners on this thread said the blacks looked outstanding, the picture is super bright and viewing angles are superb. I'm not looking for the deepest plasma blacks, but as long as they get the job done.

We have two different sources that say it has 8 zones. I can't figure out why you're so desperate to convince everyone that it has none.

I think these pictures will show it has local dimming. The blooming on the Q and the brighter light on the top left side.

Can anyone confirm that Netflix has this brighter white "circle" when exiting Netflix "children" screen? I don't have it when exiting my Netflix login but it is there with my Children's. I can't remember if it looked this way with my RPTV.

Thanks.

Jerry

That blooming on the 'Q' has me confused. The blooming is relatively limited in distance from the white of the 'Q', and that should only be possible with a large number of relatively small dimming zones. Confused now unless the 'Q' reflects some sort of light bleed and not blooming/haloing.

The upper left corner of the screen appears to be a bug - there is no reason for it to be brighter than the rest of the background black.

Can you be more specific? Are you referring to panel manufacturers (such as AUO, LG, Sharp) or to TV Brands (such as Vizio, Samsung, LG, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba & Panasonic)?

Could it be that the "blooming" around the Q is actually a design element like a glow or reverse shadow? The logos to the right appear to have none.

I tried Netflix with that UI on a TiVo Roamio, Roku 3 and Xbox 360 and found no glow around that magnifying glass icon. What device are you running a Netflix player on?

The left Corner has heavy clouding? Like the other pictures when you are in the "Auto" Mode seems like a hardware issue? Or the local dimming is not good because the clouding in the left corner semms very bad for a full direct led.
