I would venture to guess this set is made by TCL.

Best Buy had this set, set up directly across from the Vizio 50" M501D-A2R and Ive was eyeballing them....and the $400 vs $800 price tag....and decided to go with this 48" set with the Samsung/Sony S-PVA panel and Full Array LED backlighting. I dont want or need 3D or Onboard Internet Connectivity. The only thing Ill miss is the 240Hz and SPS Frame Interpolation....which Ill trade for $400 and wait and see what panels are in the 2014 FALD 49" and 50" Vizio M series sets.

Im all in.

I believe Hisense makes the Insignia's now (not necessarily a bad thing maybe better ) since maybe 2011 ( I read it somewhere ,maybe Digitmes or Display Search ?) those Samsung VA panels should be decent I have a 40" 2013 Sony Bravia with one in my bedroom it plays fine.

I Also have a 2013 42" LG in another bedroom with an LGD IPS panel
The Sony has a better picture (the LG is OK though) but as one would expect the LG has a much better view angle . I noticed the Insignia's were looking better the last time I was at B.B .

Thanks for the heads up on HiSense. I think you're right about that.

Ive been somewhat paying attention to Insignia LCD TVs for a few years now and they moved from primarily using S-IPS panels to then MVA panels and now hodge podge of different panels....mostly some derivation of the Vertical Array.

Glad to see they are going back to VA panels (better contrast and black than IPS most of the time ) either Samsung SPVA or AUO MVA are my preference some of the AUO MVA panels are showing up in premium Sony's and later will be in the reference Visio R and new Visio new M series coming out this summer could be the TOTL Toshiba might use one also .

So I set this TV up last night and did some testing and watched a movie. I first calibrated the set with the somewhat limited calibration controls looking at shadow detail and colors and whatnot. Then I compared them to the presets that Insignia provided and I was pleasantly surprised that Movie setting was very close to what I had arrived at, excepting the Sharpness control which I had set to 10 out of 100 after first going with zero....and the contrast (white level was much lower than I had set, but the movie I was "watching" didnt have good full field white scenes it was very dark movie with odd colors (Thor 2). Then I put in T2 Superbit Edition and ran the THX Optimizer and set the white levels with that and was very close to the Movie setting as well.

I think the DVD player I was using a Playstation 2 has issues with below black and so I will set up the Oppo 970HD and check into that and then run the Avia disc as well. Also I saw some occassional blurring on fast motion which I want to investigate. I also couldnt find an HDMI cable to use so that may be an issue as well.

The black levels are lower than my true matte Vizio GV42LF which uses an LG S-IPS panel. Though I wish they were a bit lower.

The set is pretty thin and the backlight uniformity was good from the Direct Lit LEDs.

The video processing/upscaling seems pretty good but not the best Ive seen upon preliminary investigation.

The panel produced bluish blacks which I am unable to address/mitigate because of the lack of RGB color calibration controls other than Color, Tint, and Cool, Normal, Warm settings...unfortunately.

I also played a video game to get an idea of input lag and it didnt seem to offensive. It does have a Game Mode.

So all in all, pretty good so far, especially for 48" and $400. But still some issues to look into.

Some things I like about this unit.

The User Menus are not spectacular but they look nicer than some. Clean with bright green accents.

Has physical buttons for On/Off, Volume Up/Down, Channel Up/Down, and Menu on the set.

Full Array Direct Backlighting instead of Edge Lit whilst maintaining a slim profile.

The speakers are decent, better than most slimline affairs these days....but still leave me looking for a Sound Bar. I am hard of hearing and this is an issue for me.

$400 for 48"

Ill check into the OTA ATSC Tuner and Channel Guide tomorrow, as well.

So another thing I didnt like about this TV is that it didnt come with a User Manuel. You can download the PDF and print or view on screen. Meh. And if you print the first and last page are all black ink monsters with no useful information, which should be omitted from the page print range.

I really like the pedestrian looking remote that comes with this TV, the buttons are big and organized well and have some shape differentiation to locate from feel. It's not backlit but the Input button is very conspicuous and it also has direct access to change the Picture Setting (Game, Standard, Vivid, Movie, Custom). It's very responsive as well.

A couple of more negatives for the TV....

No Vertical or Horizontal controls.

No way to Add Channels directly, they have to be picked up altogether on one Scan....which really is annoying for people with Broadcasts from different directions and out in the boondocks. Im not excited about the sensitivity of the ATSC tuner either but Ill know more about that when I hook up the Zenith 901 CECB which I am familar with that tuner and it's quality.

The viewing angle is small on this set. However the picture is entirely watchable at greater angles, just the blacks are not as deep and their is some small color shifting.

The video processing and up scaling, I give a B at best. The Mediatek chipsets in the Vizios from 2008 do a better job with deinterlacing and jaggies and moire for example. Granted your DVD, BluRay and other devices are likely to have decent scaling and deinterlacing in them.

On a high note the 3D Y/C Comb filter does a very good job with the Composite input signal.

The set seems to be unable to reproduce blacker than black, perhaps it's level is capped at IRE 7...which is very unfortunate. EDIT: (This issue was determined to be one with the PS2 as DVD player source and not the set). Switched to the Oppo 970HD DVD player as a source and this issue vanished.

We just picked up a few of these for our office. I just tried out your settings and they look pretty good. Did you make the changes within the "Custom" mode?

If you run them for the patients sitting room at the office or something like that, you might turn on Adaptive Contrast.

If they are used mostly during the Daytime...then you might kick the Backlight up to 50.

I would take the Shaprness down to 15 as well.

I spent quite a bit of time with this set on Sunday, watched Talladega Nascar race and then had the Oppo DVD player and several movies and Disney Wow and Avia II and THX Optimizer calibration discs. Also sent 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i from the DVD player to the set looking at the comparative scaling and deinterlacing abilities of the DVD player (a known pretty good performer) to the TV sets internal scaling and deinterlacing. Long story short the 480p signal seemed to be the best output from the Oppo to the TV. The Deinterlacer in the Oppo is clearly better than the TV set and the TV set scaling seems to be a bit better than the Oppo.

So I ended up here for Daytime Settings

Backlight 40
Brightness 50
Contrast 57
Color 47
Tint 0
Sharpness 11
Overscan Off
Dynamic Backlight Off
Color Temp Normal
Adaptive Contrast Off (On for Sports)

And during the Night or Dark Room viewing

I just turn down the Backlight to 25 and drop the Brightness to 49....and change the Color Temp to Warm to try to mitigate the Bluish Blacks some...especially in dark films.

Adaptive Contrast is particularly useful for Sporting Events like Baseball and Football, IMO. But mostly just leave it off for Movies and Primetime TV. That setting is something that you might want to play with....to see it's effects for yourself.

It stinks that you cant customize the other settings. Another grumble I have with this TV. The best is to have independent settings for each input....and a Game/PC mode...and that's it. I changed the settings on other modes but they returned to default didnt hold in the memory unfortunately so it looks like one Custom setting and that's it.

After spending more time with the ATSC tuner on this set and several antennas.....Im gonna give the tuner an A. With the caveat of not being able to add channels manually being a Big Fail. The tuner sensitivity and selectivity are very good.

Pros

$400 for 48"
Samsung 10th Gen S-PVA Panel with good native blacks and high light throughput
300 cd/m2 peak brightness
Full Array Direct LED Backlighting (improves Screen backlighting Uniformity)
Good 3D Y/C Digital Comb Filter
Good ATSC Tuner
Low Input Lag plus Game Mode
Free of noticeable banding on difficult fog and smoke scenes.
DTS and Dolby sound processing onboard (not Surround)
Very Usable Remote if Pedestrian Looking (and lacks Backlighting)
Mobile High Definition Link (MHL)
Physical Buttons on the TV set for On/Off, Volume, Channel Change, and Menu
User Menu drops down to a single bar at the bottom of the screen for adjusting Backlight Level, Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Color and Tint
Quck Start Up to TV viewing (about 6 seconds)
Slim Design means no skimping on the number of LEDs behind the screen
Intuitive TV Stand
Ability to do No Overscan
No 3D
No Smart Internet WiFi Features (which age poorly and cause bugs and problems and slow boot up times...not to mention privacy concerns)
Low Energy Usage and Heat Production
Closed Captioning System is nicely customizable
No Banding Issues

So So

Semi-Gloss Screen (does an OK job at subduing some light source reflections but I prefer a semi matte)
Video Processing (scaling is pretty good, deinterlacing is so so) (can be mitigated with high quality sources with superior video processing and or 1080 resolution)
User Menus and Information (looks pretty good, intuitive, and responsive)
Decent TV Speakers (get pretty loud and remain distortion free = better than most of what is out there these days for internal TV speakers)
Channel Number, FCC Call Letter Designation and Source Resolution on the Tuner information panel (current program information available with a button press as well.)

Cons

Motion Blur (caused by constant on backlight and slowish pixel response times)
Bluish Blacks (subtle and inherent to the S-PVA panel)
Not 120Hz panel
No Frame Interpolation
No Advanced Color Calibration (just Color, Tint, and Temp (Cool, Normal, Warm)
Only 2 HDMI Ports (3 makes more sense and 4 would be even better)
Only 1 Shared Component/Composite Input
Tight Viewing Angle (really not that objectionable black level rise and color shifting off axis but it's there)
Cannot Manually Add Channels to the ATSC Tuner
No Horizontal/Vertical Picture Controls (though you can do Overscan to get rid of Closed Captioning data for example a the edge of the screen)
Only One Customizable Picture Setting
No Physical User Manual in the Box (User Manual is available online as a PDF)
.

Startup is pretty quick about 6 seconds to an image from the TV tuner on the screen. 4 or 5 to the Insignia DTS startup screen.

I wach alot of Balck&White programs and If TV's color temperature is not correct with excessive blue tint and no way to fix it, I would not be happy. Blue tint probably also effect TV's over all color fidelity also smile.gif

I think this issue is native to the S-PVA panel...so must be addressed digitally. The best Ive been able to do is go to the Warm setting and then tone the Color Saturation down a bit.

For your information the 39" Insignia does not use the same panel as this. It uses the same panel as the Vizio 39" and seems to be some kind of Vertical Array, perhaps made by Sharp. So dont give up on it.

Thanks for that info.

BB have Insignia 39 inch on sale for $250 this week, but this TV does not have anlog audio output. So I am looking at its new big brother NS-40D510NA15 which have 39-1/2 inch panel, and have analog audio output for $300.

So it takes time to evaluate a set properly, but Im thinking that this set is a keeper. Im overall satisfied with the unit. I think this 48" might be the gem of the Insignia 510 lineup so far, as well.

I bought the 40" from Best Buy today for $269 to use on my back patio. Haven't set it up yet but I'll be following this thread for some tips on getting the picture right. I walked in looking for a 32" but I couldn't pass it up at that price.

I played Master and Commander DVD which is a torture test for panel banding....and it passed but it did exhibit some subtle striations.

The Achilles Heel of this set seems to be Motion Blurring, which is unfortunate.

Where did you find out that it has full array backlighting? I didn't see that information on the product page at Bestbuy.com or the product manual downloaded from Insignia's web site.

Dammit! They just increased the price from $399.99 to $449.99. But the 50-incher is still $499.99.
