It did not take me too long after turning it on to notice the clouding and flash light. Very noticeable with menu black background and the nexflix loading logo. The picture are a little long exposure to hi lite, so it's not as bad as the pictures make it seems but it still bad enough see it on solid color backgrounds like black or red, especially in the upper right corner and lower left corner. I just want to know is it a defect, then I will get a replacement. If it is inherent, then I will look for something different. Compared to my HX909, the X850B is a giant step backwards. I only upgrade to get 4K and bigger screen, but I do not think the X850B belongs in the XBR family. It's more like a KDL series with 4K.

Thanks.

This is why I went back to OLED form my Sony 65x850B.

I am back home with true blacks on my OLED, The 65X950 also has great black levels.

It's stated that all edge lit sets will have clouding/flashlighting to some degree and you basically play the panel lotto when buying one. If you feel it is unacceptable you could try exchanging it and see how that goes.

It's a shame these manufacturers don't have tighter quality control for these mid-high end sets.

Are the photos taken with an input selected and no video source? The 900A and 900B shows some clouding when an input is selected with no video source.

Try connecting a laptop or video source and have it output full screen black, gray and then white. If you still see clouding with a video source connected then exchange for another 850B.

Check your screen for major clouding and flash light.

Please post some pics and your first impressions. I keep vacillating between the XBR-70X850B with the HT-CT770 sound bar and the XBR-65X9000B all by its lonesome self! My trigger finger is very itchy!

Well the pictures of the edge light and clouding is disconcerting. Waiting to hear from others if they have more of this issue. Seems my quest to get an affordable passive 3D, high quality upgrade to my current Sony 52XBR2 goes on.

Connect your computer and output full screen solid black, white, gray, red, blue and green and look for clouding. Or create jpeg files of those solid color blocks and save to a USB stick. Plug in the USB and display the files.

I used a black jpeg file via my NAS. I have 8 test files I created using MS Paint that goes through the RGB combination. I have Black, Red, Green, Blue, Aqua, Purple, Yellow, and White.

Thanks everyone for your help. I will be sending the TV back, it's defective. It's obvious every time bring up the menu, the black background flash light in upper right and this with ECO and ambient turned on. It so bad there is not a lot of room for me to reduce the backlighting. I'm just trying to decide to get a replacement or get the 900B/950B. My problem with the 900B is those speakers. It has been at least 15 years since I last use the TV speakers. The problem with the 950B is it's so expensive and it doesn't come in 55".

For comparison, here is my 4.5 years old XBR-HX909:

Keep in mind this is a long exposure picture, so it's actually a jet black background when viewing.

I will keep you updated.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could answer a couple question's regarding the X850B series 4k tv.

First, does anyone know if all 4 HDMI ports are in fact HDMI 2.0 ports?

Second, does anyone know or not if any of the 4k tv's that are mentioned the thread title will support the native 4k resolution in PC mode if using the right type of connector or adapter?

Hi All,

Question for any one with the 850B hooked up to a audio system, Does the Home menu clicks and swipes sounds go away when switch to audio system speaker vs TV speakers? Not sure if this is normal or I have something else wrong. Audio plays when playing DLNA videos but not the menu sounds. Strange.

Thanks, now I know. Key Tones are not available on external speakers. So sad, this must be new since I last bought a sony. If there is an option to turn off /on, why turn off during audio system?

Just wanted to know how cable channels look upscaled? Reason I ask I was at Bestbuy yesterday and there was a 55xbr850 over top a w850 either 60 or 65 inch. I know the feed in best buy isnt great but with the up scaling should I be able to tell the difference? If there wasnt a sticker on the tv letting me know it was a 4k set I would not have know. The top tv is the 4k tv. From the picture I took I know it looks like the top image may look better but i think it was because of the angle I took them from. In person the 4k had a little bit more color but I really had to look at it from a close distance to notice it.

If you divided the 4k set into 4, the 1080 signal which is probably going into the set would only fill 1 1/4 of the screen. So to me the fact you cant tell the set is making up 75% of the picture using the upscaling is a very good thing.smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

The feed looped at BB is crap. Ask them to feed both TVs output from a blu-ray and you will see the difference. And ask them to feed the 850B 4K material. Or bring your own. Download 4K clips to a USB stick and plug into the 850B and play the clips.
