I am extremely stuck between these 2 TV's Samsung UN65HU8550 Vs Sony XBR65X850B and am not sure which is better and why? What are your recommendations and why ? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
The Samsung will do much better dealing with clouding. Unless you are a hardcore gamer the Samsung is your best choice. The Samsung has active 3D the Sony has passive, which do you prefer? The Samsung also will be upgradable with their box if 4K specs change.
Hi everyone thanks for your replies! I am not a hardcore gamer but yes I do game . I prefer active 3d until I'm looking at price but I find the full resolution each eye is well worth it .
I was under the impression the Sony is a entry line series where as the samsung is a premium series . The flagship being 9000 but I believe the main difference is the curved screen?
Also what about dimming ? I heard the dimming is edge on the sony ? But entire image on samsung ? Is this true ?does one have better dimming than the other ?
How would you all think picture quality would compare ? Does tri luminous make a huge diff?
I just ordered the Sony after spending an hour comparing the two at BB Monday afternoon. Let me first say that both looked fantastic. Anyone stating you can't see the difference isn't an enthusiast or is straight hating the fact that their 1080P set is soon to be dated. I know this first hand as I sold my 6 month old W900A earlier this week.
To start the 8550 is thinner and it's colors did have a certain 'pop'. The blacks were very well defined if not 'inky'. The connect box thingy is much bigger than I thought it would be, looks more like a premium power strip. Off angle viewing was not bad although from the sides you really notice the silver metallic of the frame, distracting. However, the Samsung seemed to be very stylish, light and modern, along the same vein as their curved screens
The 850B, while not as bright, the colors seemed richer to my eyes. The thicker frame is a bit off putting but it does add to a solid feel, though because of it, I'm still not sure if it's going to fit in the space I have for it. I paid special attention to the black levels throughout and I must say they looked every bit as detailed/inky as the Samsung. As a matter of fact the picture was so rich and detailed I would have sworn I was looking at a Plasma. Gorgeous 4K demo, I watched the 10 min loop over and over again.
However, all things being equal, there was one glaring detail that I'm shocked employees didn't address immediately (then again it's BB). Watching the Samsung demo, while beautiful, I did notice moments of judder. Now this could be a matter of settings and I was willing to blow it off but then it came to the World War Z scene... While panning up to the wall in Jerusalem the Judder was so bad it was unwatchable! After that point I began to notice a pattern. Fast moving scenes or large panning scenes all displayed some level of staggering. Not to the frame wrenching horror of WWZ, but none the less present. I then spent another :20 with the Sony scanning hard for any hint of artifacts or judder..., ZERO. Never skipped a beat, flowed like liquid through every frame, every scene, in all conditions.
Thanks so much !! I really appreciate it thank you so much !! Very detailed and extrmwly insightful ! What about the local dimming on samsung vs edge dimming on sony ?
The HU8550 will offer a much more capable dimming solution than the X850B. The Samsung offer UHD dimming (software) with precision black local dimming hardware based dimming (zones). The Sony offers their Frame dimming which is more in line with a global dimming solution than zone or local dimming.
You will have far more adjustment options for calibrating the display with the Samsung.
Sony and Samsung both offer some of the best motion processing in the biz,so sport, gaming and movies should be fantastic.
Sony is pretty much untouchable when it comes to gaming as far as input lag is concerned. I don't game online,so lag is of little concern to me as long as it doesn't reach 100ms or higher (in game mode).
You know, I couldn't tell the difference. Something like that would take some real evaluation at home, light off, lights on, etc. I'm just hoping that I get a panel as good as the one I saw, otherwise it's going back.
I've read a bunch of reviews on amazon . Calibrate it and the consensus is the samsung will look better than what you saw in the store any clarifications on dimming from anyone would still help ! And is sony a better picture quality? Is 8550 a flagship for the flat panel?
I almost rolled over someone saying the 1080p sets are outdated haha 4k is great and all but at least 2-3 years from being out fully. That being said the Sony looked awesome I recently had to pick 70w850b (1080p) or the Sony 65 4k tv and to me the size was more important as once you sit back to where you should I can't tell a diffrence from 10ft sony though hands down
Thanks again! Very very insightful!! So I actually picked up the sony 70" x850b and then had buyers remorse because it did not fit my wall very well. The picture was good but I liked the brightness on the samsung better at BB that being said many people said go with sony in the store but I wasn't sure if it is because Sony gives them kickbacks. The picture also suffered from major glare in my opinion.
The point of this forum was to see if I am wrong about the quality of display and if it was truly superior to Samsung which I am shying away from . I own a plasma Samsung from 2011 and LOVE it. But being an early adopter, I couldn't resist 4k which looks stunning with native footage ( if I can find some ) after reading almost all the reviews on amazon and comparing it to my experience with sony I am beginning to think that Samsung is the right choice .
You good people are also reinforcing my belief and also teaching me new things that I am not aware of. I will probably get the samsung unless so,done says something drastic about it here .
In my opinion the best people to learn from are fellow enthusiasts as we all share a passion for the field and while I am fairly aware of the market , I am humble enough to recognize the immense value of all your thoughtful opinions and suggestions.
Thank you all!
One other thing I have a Pioneer elite SC-75 , I had a different thread I started asking about whether or not it supports HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. I couldn't find any answers as no one has replied . Do any of you know ?
It doesn't seem to have the HDMI 2.0 or HDCP 2.2. Since the those standards really started appearing in the higher 2014 models. Your Elite does support 4k @ 30hz and true 4096 x 2160p @ 24p.
What world are you on? From 10 ft back you will not tell the diffrence between full hd and 4k . Have you not done your hw? There great tvs but the technology isn't worth the money as of now . And won't be for another 3 years otherwise they would stop making full hd tvs my lord some people
3840 x 2160p keeps the format at 16:9 or 1:78:1,so manufacturers simply round up to 4k. Market research has shown that know one likes a 3.8k TV.
If I am correct 4096x2160p would change the picture format to 1:9:1 or 16:10 aspect ratio, which would make our screen slightly more square than rectangle like 1920x1200p monitors.
I have spent 2 hours on the phone with samsungs supervisor for their highest level of tech support, he didn't even know hdmi 2.0 or hdcp 2.2 existed... All of your replies are invaluable. Thanks so much ! It is the only way to clarify any of this .
Lastly will a device that does not have hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2.2 transmit 4k ? you mentioned above about my reciever being able to do 4k etc but how is this possible if the tv needs an hdcp 2.2 device? Or is that not a requirement ?
If you are streaming 4k than the new HEVC .265 is needed as well as HDCP 2,2, any 4k compliant TV/receiver will accept 4k the 1.4 HDMI @ 30Hz and 2.0 HDMI @ 60Hz. Now some the 4k media players offered by Sony and Samsung may require HDCP 2.2,but I can't be for certain.
HDCP 2.2 is not needed for streaming via built in TV apps like Netflix which is likely to be how most of us get our 4k content until they decide to implement HDCP 2.2 into 4K players. Currently there are only a few HDMI 2.0 chipsets. One allows full 4K 60 4:4:4 (18Gbps) but does not have HDCP 2.2 and the other has 4K 60 4:2:0 (10Gbps) but has HDCP 2.2. All receiver manufacturers except Onkyo opted for full HDMI 2.0 vs adding in HDCP2.2 since nothing uses it yet. Onkyo has HDCP 2.2 on two ports but they are the reduced Chroma 4:2:0 on 60Hz (full chroma 4:4:4 on 24/30 material).
Also just to point out the HU8550 does not come with a One Connect box. All the inputs are on the back but it does have a One Connect port to add a box later to upgrade. The first box for it will likely be available in 2015.

The 70" X850B is a different animal than the smaller sizes since I am pretty sure it doesn't use an IPS panel (I took a loupe to the 70" panel and don't remember it having the trademark chevron-shaped IPS pixel-structure, while the smaller sizes do). Plus, the 70" is active 3D which would imply a different panel, so the native contrast of the 70-incher should be better than the 65" and on-par with the HU8550. Keep in mind, as has been mentioned, that the X850B lacks local dimming at all size points, so the Samsung should have it beat on black levels. I find even after some quick adjustments, though, that the Sony has better-looking color (to my eyes), and is less prone to motion anomalies. Sounds like you're close to returning to 70" though...keep in mind the Samsung is also very glossy and will also reflect quite a bit. Good luck.
I could kill myself with the back and forth I am dealing with... Do I get a top of the line 1080p now and save a ton of money and wait a few years for more 4k content to be available and the tv specs to get better, or go with the 4k now and rely on the one connect box to keep me current??
To me 4k just isn't to the point where it's going to be the next big thing. They still have so much work to do to even get the tvs out to the masses and then they have to worry about content . At 10ft away the same blu ray on a full hd tv vs a 4k most people won't be able to tell diffrence . If you sit 5 ft away then maybe you will. Me personally was between the 65 sony 4k and a 70 sony 850 I went with the 70 size over the 4k more people will notice that
This was the same thing we were saying with the introduction of 1080p,funny how history repeats itself. In the year 2020 and we are talking 8k displays we'll all be like,"don't invest now it's too early and you'll never see the difference over 4k at 10ft".
Very true and that trend will continue just still think it's to early for 4k once it becomes a hit prices will drop . And for me that 70 In just dwarfed even the 65 lol
Hi everyone , thank you all So Much for all your help ! I ended up getting the 8550 Samsung today and I'm my personal opinion, I prefer it to the sony hands down . Picture quality is jaw dropping and I did not notice a problem with fast moving stuff .
Again , thank you guys so much you all have been the BEST resource in making this decision. I am so very glad I got it and it's all thanks to your invaluable opinion !
They are both great sets in the end, its not like one unit is smoking another. They are basically the same price. I do not think there is a wrong answer......
I ended up buying a 65" HU8550. Was going back and forth between that and the XBR950B. I like future upgrading of the Samsung. Great picture on both sets though. Tough decision.
Tough decision indeed but this helped ME figuire out what may be better suited to me .
Just one other thing it says on the manual this tv has a 4096 x 2160 resolution . What is this resolution I thought 4k was 3084 x 2160. And is there anyone that can confirm that the Sammy can do 4 k 3d( as per the manual ) unlike the sony which explicitly states it can only do 3d at a 2k resolution ?
