It all depends on what you want/need. If 3d and the extra 10" are important then the 80 may do. If improved quality of picture due to the FALD screen then the 70"M would be better. Neither may match everything your plasma can do, but the 70"M will most likely be closest.

Been lurking here for a while, and after seeing it was available at Costco on here, I ordered it this weekend and it was delivered today. I'm no AV expert (I was upgrading from an old Hitachi RPTV), but my initial impressions without any kind of calibration have been great. And as a gamer, I've seen no noticeable input lag at all.

Trust me it really doen't matter what the box look like because that's half the story of how that TV been shipped....At FedEx company like Sam's & Bestbuy really don't care how its shipped standing or laying flat. All they care about is load quantity because the claim will be paid if the TV damage to much....Sad but its the truth.

Another update. The 8/1 date is for arrival to the Salt Lake City distribution center, so probably won't be in the Denver stores until sometime next week

Oh well, it'll get here sooner or later.

You might be the first one to actually have a 70" M in your hands...

How's the picture quality? Are there any banding or gridding problems as people have seen in a few of the other 2014 M models?

The M702i-B3's have reached Ohio! I just happened to call my local Costco yesterday and they had just received a shipment of 5. Of all days, I had to work late so my wife made the adventure out to purchase it for us. Just a fyi... it will fit upright into a van if you slide it in from the side door with 2nd and 3 row seats down.
Since I didn't arrive home until after 9:30 last night, I can't offer much in the way of a technical review at this time. However, the picture quality is significantly better "out of the box" than the E701i-A3 that I returned(more on this below). The blacks are significantly more inky, the colors are much more saturated/rich with flesh tones right on (standard picture mode). If it looks this good "out of the box", I can't wait to calibrate with my WOW disc. Will report back once I have had time to tinker with it this weekend.
A note on my previous E701i-A3..... Originally purchased in May of 2013 from Costco. It didn't develop the dreaded white spots issue until February of this year. I went thru 2 additional refurbs from Vizio under my warranty claim that both developed white spots within the first few months. Even though I spent hours on the phone with Vizio trying to get them to upgrade me to the then current M701 series, they would not. They would have rather kept shipping me one of those defective E701 panels, paying for shipping across country from California to Ohio, paying for a private courier to come in and un-box it, set it up and re-box the old one and then ship the old one back. I finally had enough and went into Costco to see if they would be able to help me. After explaining my story, the manager made a phone call and within minutes, he said they would take care of it by returning my E701 for store credit. So, I am very fortunate to be sitting in front of my new M702i series tv.

Got the same CEVA (or whatever the shipping company is) notice as the person above. I'm being told Wednesday the 6th for delivery, but I still haven't gotten the "call to confirm".

Can the two people who have these sets already post comments about basically anything and everything? I'm hungry for info.

Also, please let me know if another thread gets started.

Will there be huge price and quality difference between this and the P series 70" that should be coming out soon?

The price is about 6-700$ more for the p series (1899 vs 2599). No one knows how big of a difference there will be. If you can wait then wait to see how the P series fairs.

Yeah, if you already have a decent setup and can hold off, you should. I, however, am probably going to be ordering the 70M in the next 2 weeks because my (LONG TIME IN THE MAKING) basement finish is finally about done, and to have that basement theater area done after all this time and just sitting empty without a TV would probably send me over the edge

However...if I get the 70M and it exhibits any of the banding or grid issues some people have seen in the Ms, or has anything else I can't live with, I may return it and cough up the extra for the P, assuming the 70P comes out within the 90 day return window I'll have with Costco.

Thanks for the update BlakeCB. Wonder where the sets come from that Ohio got them in stock before Denver? I would assume they trickle in from the west coast, but maybe they come up from south of the border?

All the info for a new TV shopper is maddening! I am considering the M701-AR that is $1899 and the Sony 65W850...PQ is of utmost importance....non gamer and this will be primary TV for main living area channel flipping, netflix and sports galore. Not into 3D at all or games with occasional COD on PS3 once a month. Will likely go without a receiver and just use a sound bar for simplicity. We have a dedicated home theater for a more enhanced movie experience. Is the Vizio the best bang for the buck under $2k?

Is a 70 an absolute must over a very good 65' like the sony? We have 12-14' to couch from wall and some light from side windows but not a ton. Getting rid of 7-8 year old Samsung DLP. I have not been able to see a M-series anywhere of decent size....I saw an E-series 70' but did not care for the PQ next to a samsung 65" that was about $1900 at best buy..really need to see the vizio to get blown away by it and pull the trigger. Any thoughts?

This is most likely using the Sharp panel, so unfortunately would might be able to see the LED light array on an all white screen at certain brightness, like on the M60. Should not be a problem in normal everyday viewing. Post pics if you can or start an Official owners thread. Congrats on your set, hope it is a good one.

Just a heads up this is the M702b3 thread (2014 model) the m701a that you mention is last years model (there is a dedicated thread the 2013 model). You should be able to see the larger models (2014) now or soon at B&M stores as they are making their way out.

If you can wait you may be able to see the p series 65 which should come in around 2k at retailers (2199 MSRP)

I'm quite pleased with the picture quality. I watched Sin City, figuring it would highlight any issues with blooming or banding and show off the black levels, and it looked great to my untrained eye. I plan on spending a lot of time with it this weekend.

I've seen some reports of banding on other sizes of the 2014 M series. Have any of you lucky M-Series 70" owners noticed anything like this? I am tempted to pull the trigger on one, but not if it has issues like this.

Thanks!

Brief calibration experience

I got my hands on this new 70 FALD Vizio (M702i-B3) that my cousin purchased 2 days ago @ costco. I was pressed for time but was able to perform some stock measurements and a quick n' dirty white balance/gamma calibration. I'm using an i1d2/HCFR for calibration.

Results regarding it's stock form (calibration dark setting w/all the nonsense turned off):
White Balance : Green push across the board
Gamma : Too dark on the low end / too bright on the high end
Color Accuracy : Noticeable yellow push in red (making it orange).

As with most sets with viable white balance and CMS controls, this one will benefit greatly from calibration.

Here are the stock measurements:

All I had time to optimize was RGB balance. I was aiming for a PL 2.22 gamma but fell short on time - I got it flattened out and it was time to go.

Quick tip for anyone calibrating these sets: The large white box that comes up when making adjustments in a continuous read mode will skew your readings significantly. To compensate I used full screen patterns and moved the meter slightly more towards the top of the screen.

Actually, you are seeing the 2013 model OOS. They've removed the 2014 model from the website.

Can't find it in stores either

Lol, didn't expect to run into you as I was lurking on the LCD forums . So how does this compare against your PN60F5300 in terms of PQ/black levels? Were you tempted to switch to this TV at all?

Well if it aint my ol' plasma pal... !

Honestly, I didn't have enough time to view the TV to develop any meaningful opinion. I did watch about 2 minutes of "Despicable Me 2" and it looked good - didn't have the depth of the plasma but I would expect so at a higher gamma in pitch black ambient light. We did throw a full field black screen up and stood back to look for "glow", it was barely there but not much. Our budget plasmas certainly have better stock color accuracy. Off angle viewing was not great, which I expected. Otherwise I think it's a smokin 70" at that $1900ish price point, going to be tough to beat. I'm looking forward to getting the gamma up further and reigning in those color inaccuracies.

Of course, I did try to push him in the 64" F8500 direction but failed . Although, I can understand wanting the extra 6 inches, less screen reflection (it's in a very bright room during the day), and not having to worry about burn in (not to mention saving a grand).

Local Costco has them in, will probably run over tonight and grab one

EDIT: TV Acquired! So far so good, don't notice any issues with it, picture looks good (if not a bit bright and too much color, but I have done a few basic adjustments and will see if I can watch a movie or something on it tonight. Football is going to be awesome on this thing

Do you remember what any of the settings were that you changed? I just got one last night and did some very minor adjustments to color, sharpness, backlight. It looks pretty good to my eye, but I'm sure it can be tweaked further.

I watched part of LOTR, the more recent POTA movie, and some TV on it last night. The Blu-Ray movies looked fantastic. I also put up a pure white screen, didn't see any hot spots and the uniformity was a lot better than the Samsung 65H6350 I currently have. The Sammy on a pure white screen does show some shadowing in the corners.

I had the lights way down and didn't see anything like the backlight bleed I'm used to seeing on older LCD TVs.

The only thing that I noticed, and it might also be due to the larger screen, is somcolor banding on screens where the color fades from one shade to another. My Blu-Ray player has a purple screen that goes from light to dark, and I could see it there. Pretty sure it was there on the Sammy too, but I'll hook it up to the Sammy tonight and see how it looks on there. Or maybe it's just a crappy color background on the player, who knows
