Lightbulb Create a digital photo frame from a smart TV?

Hi, I'm sorry for posting this question as a newbie but would really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

My father is an enthusiast photographer and I would like to surprise him for his 60th birthday with a large digital picture frame to display his photos. The thing is - I really don't want it to look like a multi-purpose TV or for him to have to go through the TV menus to get to photo display mode every time it turns on.

So essentially what I'm thinking about is pretty simple:
- Good quality display (40''-55'')
- Frame
- Option to boot directly to viewing pictures from USB
- Ability to set up slideshow timing (I'd like it to default to 1 a day)
- My budget is around $1000

Researching in the web it seems like this can be built from the ground up using Raspberry Pi, but this is probably too technical and complicated for me (even if I pay someone to do this). I was wondering if this can also be done by "dumbing-down" a smart TV, perhaps with SamyGo and a slim Samsung TV or developing a special skin on chromecast?

Would really appreciate any advice!
Thanks, Sam
