Is it too early to start a thread dedicated to this display and those of us who are looking forward it? It has all the signs of being a game-changer with respect to price vs performance.

FALD with 384 zones:eek:
800nits
80% of Rec 2020 colorspace
true 24/48 fps presentation (no 3:2 pulldown)
Integrated5.1 soundbar

I for one am hoping for a November-ish release date with a street price of about $3K (but prob really closer to $3500)

AND...I hope it doesn't have a glossy screen! I can live with semi-glossy, as it seems to provide a more detailed image than a matte screen. Anybody hear about the screen yet?

Pretty amazing a woman could conceive and birth a child faster than Vizio can give birth to the "P" and "Ref" series especially after it was stated they'd already invested two years into these back in January.

For God's sake at this rate LG will have it's 4K 65" 77" OLED debut before these and two generations of 55" OLED's.

It's hard not to poke fun or be a doubting Thomas when you come in here for 9 months seeing numerous anticipation threads and the Hype of CES 2014 and ZERO results while competitors are delivering second gen 4K and OLED and Vizio is stuck on 1080P and zero 3D choices and until they deliver the goods they remain a second class budget panel until they can deliver on the CES Hype that has demo'd no result to-date and their existing models could not qualify for the high end flat panel shootout held recently.

Please prove us wrong Vizio, brings something in UHD to market will ya!

I don't think competitors are concerned with slomo progress of Vizio as they are global and Vizio is domestic:cool:

Wow Westa, that was ONE LONG SENTENCE! I wasn't sure when to take a breath....
To your point however, it would be nice if Vizio could make good on these promises, but I suspect they don't have the R&D budget or resources to develop product as quickly as say, Samsung or Sony.
Given that LG is just about the only company developing OLED sets, I suspect they contracted or hired all the OLED R&D talent that there was on the market to help them...

I've read non-specific comments in a couple places saying that the 70" P Series will have an inferior screen in comparison to the smaller models. Can anyone confirm that?

John

Where have you heard or seen that? The 60" and 70" P Series panels will be made by Sharp, while the 55" and 65" Panels will be made by AUO. What aspect of the screen do you believe will be inferior on the Sharp panels versus the AUO panels?

The fact that Vizio chose to make the Reference Series 65" and not 70" is an indication that the AUO panel should be as good as it gets, but I've not heard or seen anything about inferiority of the Sharp panels.

There doesn't appear to be a thread dedicated to the Vizio R series, and what info there is seems to be posted in several different threads. So I thought I would resurrect this thread I started a while back. Latest speculation I heard is that it might be 2015 before this series gets released. Does anybody have any hard evidence to the contrary or to support 2015?

Vizio executives were straight up suggesting at the P-series launch media event that the R-series would probably be 2015.

They showed a prototype at CES 2014 but called it a product. A lot of the major manufacturers show prototypes the only difference is they don't call them products and say they will launch that year when they haven't worked out any of the manufacturing details.

So, yeah, looks like it may be a product in 2015. At least the 65". We'll see if the 120" ever is a consumer product.

I believe its very likely Samsung already has a tv similar to the R series ready to go for CES. Sony and others are of course going to follow. Theirs no way Vizio will be the only ones with HDR. id consider this year another trial run next year and 2016 will probably be a Alot more significant for UHD and OLED. so maybe vizio did us a favor for those also waiting on the R series, its always good to have more choices available.

Vizio was never ahead. It was a clever marketing gambit and it has paid off. For every person annoyed they over-promised there is still more interest in Vizio on this site than in previous years, and discussion of it as a major player versus a value player.
Precisely - from a marketing aspect, this year's CES was a major win. Their core market will get bigger because of the extra internet attention of a cheap 4k. That the P seems to have fallen short of its lofty claims ultimately only prevents sales to the very small percentage of objective enthusiasts, but we were never Vizio customers or target customers to begin with. If quality defects don't bite them in the rear, kudos to them.

I can't wait. But I'm gonna say that it will be worth the wait. One question, how is this HDR content they are waiting for going to be deliverd? 4K bluray or will it be included with the streaming services?

Good question. Even if the HDR/Dolby Vision content is created, how are we going to get it? If it is streamed, will it require even more bandwidth than even the current 4k does now?

Vizio R doesn't have to best the Sharp Elite in overall picture quality, Vizio is more of a value brand, if they price these right, they are gonna be very profitable and making a profit is what keeps you in business, it make no sense to follow the lead of the Japanese CE companies and spend a fortune on R&D(win bragging rights) only to be out of business within the year, the Video Enthusiast was never there target audience, the reason they are tops in sales in the U.S. is value(reasonable price, reasonable quality), the audience here on AVS will pick apart any and every display and on top of that, we don't buy enough T.V.'s, to sustain there business, if that was the case, than Fujitsu, Hitachi, Pioneer, Panasonic and to some degree Sharp(Elite), would still be in business all those jaw dropping high quality Flat Panels are Kaput.

But the Reference model *is* their effort to attain a portion of the high end market. Hell, it's even insinuated in the chosen naming convention of the model ("Reference")! At CES the prototype was shown next to a Sharp Elite for crying out loud. Another year has since passed, so I can't wait to see if they've just been blowing smoke for 12+ months. I would have never even considered the brand before (it's still a distant second to OLED in my preference, but timing and pricing is important),

The only thing that I am worried about now, is that OLED is getting considerably cheaper. Not nearly as cheap as the P-Series, but the R-Series will not be that cheap either. A 65" P-series is going for $2,199 right now. LG's EC9300 is already at $3,499 right now. Some have been reporting to get the EA9800's for $1,999 (but on clearance). So, will the RS be worth it now? Is it still going to have a 10-bit panel? Will the HDR make it better than a OLED even? Will it be able to do 4:4:4 even?

I am thinking that since they took to long to get the RS out that they are not going to sell that many. Maybe I am wrong but you have to think that with the 384 Active LED zones that it will be at least $1,000 extra or more.

I'm thinking that Vizio is betting on most consumers choosing 4K over 1080p OLED. I'd LOVE to be wrong on this, but I don't expect that LG will get the price down on its upcoming 65" 4K EC9700 fast enough. At 10-11k starting price (going by the few listings that have popped up recently), that TV could end up still being twice the price of the Vizio R 65" after reductions next year.

I think we could see the price on the EC9300 drop to around $2.5k in the coming months. That would make it quite appealing to me. Thing is, all the marketing focus is on 4K and I don't think most consumers are going drop that kind of money of a 1080p set no matter how good it is when they can get a quality 4K for around the same price.

How is everybody here just glossing over the 120"?? The real WOW factor of the best of CES show wasn't just that it was an attempt at best in class 4k (or even best picture quality ever), it was that it was going to be offered in a 120" option! Not just 4k, 10 bit, etc, but with a killer sound bar and Bluetooth sub and optional powered rear speakers for more realistic surround sound. This would be the first truly "home theater in a box" ever...albeit a damn big box. No need for a screen, projector, bulb replacements, requirements of a dark room, reciever, wires, cabinet, setup and on and on. If this thing lives up to the hype and they can offer it at 25k or less this is a steal. I have owed dedicated home theater rooms and they are a pain in the ***.
Bring on the football weekends, Lord of the Rings marathons, and the most killer Call of Duty sessions ever!
You are all invited! ;)

Last I read, Vizio was still trying to figure out the logistics of delivering a 120" screen. I could be wrong, but the 120" seemed to be more of a proof of concept set. Vizio has been widely typecast as a low budget, low quality manufacturer. They needed something really big to blow the doors off that stereotype. They succeeded, but it remains to be seen if this set will actually come to fruition for anything less than $50,000. If it does, it's more likely it will be special orders for things like casinos, large convention centers, etc.
