review from 4K:
http://4k.com/tv/review-vizio-p-series-4k-tvs-50-70-inches-affordable-top-shelf-technology/

"Whatever minor flaws the Vizio TVs do offer are more than offset by their sheer affordability. These are not your typical crappy budget 4K TVs from unknown brands, they really deliver while sticking to budget prices."

Updated CNET review of FW 1.1.14/1.1.16: http://www.cnet.com/products/vizio-p552ui-b2/2/

"Black level: The 65-inch P series is capable of delivering a very deep level of black and superb contrast for an LCD TV. In most of the demanding dark scenes from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," it was neck-and-neck with the Samsung PNF8500 plasma (and often surpassed it) for second-deepest blacks in the lineup, trailing only the exceedingly expensive Sony."

Updated review from HeronFidelity on FW 1.1.14/1.1.16:
http://www.heronfidelity.com/blog/update-vizio-p-series-ultra-hd.html

"Almost there
The Vizio P-Series Ultra HD television isn't videophile-grade, but the latest update barely nudged it into a value 4K UHD recommendation. Calibration benefits any TV, and it's a must for the Vizio P-series to fully realize its picture potential. "

http://hdguru.com/vizio-4k-ultra-high-definition-p652ui-b2-review/#more-14529

"Given our preference for accuracy over enhancement, HD Guru sees no choice but to award the Vizio P652ui-B2 1 out of 5 Hearts, our lowest rating."

http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/podcast...ast-658-vizio-p702uib3-ultra-hd-tv-review.php

"Conclusion We are at the beginning of the Ultra HD transition and you may wonder if its too early to switch. One can argue that it is, but if you have a Blu-ray player or a 15Mbps Internet connection you really don’t have to wait. The Vizio P702ui-B3 will take those platforms and make them better! We can’t wait for 4K Blu-ray!"

http://televisions.reviewed.com/content/vizio-p652ui-b2-p-series-4k-led-tv-review

"The P652ui-B2 may be the most value-packed we've reviewed this year."

http://www.rtings.com/reviews/tv/lcd-led/vizio/p-series

"The Vizio P Series is an exceptional 4k LED TV at a competitive price. It isn't without flaws (no LED TV is perfect), but it has an overall great picture quality.

P60 Overall Rating: 8.4
  • +Great black uniformity, even with local dimming turned off. It also has a better gray uniformity than the M Series.
  • +Very bright. It currently holds our maximum white luminance record.
  • +Very low input lag and great features to control the motion blur, which is great for gaming. However, it has a very long trail on full color transition.
  • -Poor viewing angle. The colors change significantly when you view it at an angle [greater than 21 degrees]."

Also, it appears that Youtube does offer some HQ 4k videos that are high bitrate to get these follow these steps:
1. Get a download plugin (Flashget is what I use)
2) go to Youtube and find a 4K video (example http://youtu.be/eYqIEBpbRhg?list=UUQn7aX0JAIfH0KVL7nqUzjw)
3) for flashget once the video starts playing you will see the "media icon" become available in the top right of firefox
4) Click the icon and look for the "highres" media file.
5) select either the webm or mp4 (I have found that webm while having no audio has the higher bitrates and larger files size when both webm and mp4 "highres" versions are available)
6) You can download the separate audio file as well and then use a program to "mux" the audio and video together.
7) Once complete you should see the file available in your selected download location., you should now be able to play this file as you would any media file. You may need to update your codecs if you are running an out of date pack.

First owner reports of the new Vizio P Series are starting to come in and this thread has been started to capture them.

Specs of the P Series are summarized below.

It is now clear from the Vizio website that different sizes of the P Series are based on different panel types. Vizio did not make this clear within their specifications until recently (and absolute shame on them for that :-( but the spec on viewing angle was a hint).

55" P Series has been confirmed to have an IPS LCD panel (so poor black level performance when viewing in a dark room).

70" P Series is confirmed to be based on a Sharp VA-type LCD panels (so ~5X better black levels). For dark-room viewing, the early owner's of the 70" P Series express greater satisfaction with the black levels than the one owner of the 55" (though new P55 owners have since emerged that are happy with the P55 for dark-room viewing). The 70" has a reported issue with perfect red calibration but most consider that it is not noticeable unless next to perfectly calibrated TV.

65" P Series is based on a VA-type panel. The 65" P has the same 178°/178° viewing angle as the 55" IPS panel but in the case of the 65" M Series, the panel has that same 178°/178° viewing angle spec but the panel has been confirmed by Vizio to be VA-type. So the 65" P isVA-type like the 65" M (and probably both coming from AUO as has been rumored), but this is more of a wildcard than the 60" and 70" panels at this stage. It is also possible/likely that the 65" AUO panel does not suffer from the same minor red chroma defect as the 60" and 70" panels.

60" P Series has been confirmed as VA type and is another Sharp panel like the 70" panel and it also suffers from the same minor red chroma defect as the 70".

55" P Series has been confirmed to have an IPS LCD panel (so poor black level performance when viewing in a dark room). Calibrated color on this TV is excellent (see posts #2 and #3 below) and it appears to be a winner for bright-room viewing but not the best P Series TV for dark-room viewing. Local dimming improves the black level performance when viewing in a dark room but in this case the viewing angle is severely reduced (which undcuts the primary advantage of IPS panels over VA panels). Anyone looking for a TV for brightroom viewing and needing the widest possible viewing angle that an LCD can provide may want to consider the 55" over all of the other P Series sizes. Anyone not needing the widest possible viewing angle or for whom dark-room viewing is a high priority should probably avoid the 55" in favor of one of the other sizes (which are all VA-based).

50" P Series has the same viewing angle spec to suggest it will be VA-type, but that is an unknown at this stage.

Went to Sam's today. But they had no P series in stock.

I did look at the D650i-b2 though, and it's a VA panel.

The new Magnavox 55" is using a IPS Panel.

E320i forgot what B version though, had a IPS panel.

M49 IPS panel, M55 IPS Panel.

Everything else seemed to be VA in Vizio.

They didn't have a M65 there, or E65 for that matter. So, I couldn't test if they were IPS or not.

I didn't have much time though, had frozen things melting in my trunk and had to shop fast and go home. :)
The M652i-B2 has a VA panel, at least the one on display did as does the one I bought and am enjoying right now.

Well, that covers the D and M being VA panels. So, does that hold true for the P65 panel???....

I guess will just have to wait till someone gets one, and takes a look. :)

I dont have a straight on picture, i can take one when I get home tonight and I'll post it later. I wouldnt even say it's subtle when viewing straight-on...it's almost non-existent. However, once you get outside of the ideal viewing angle (side to side as well as up and down) it becomes much more obvious. Also, remember that if you're just watching normal content, you wouldnt be able to see it even off-axis...I guess it's similar to the flashlight effect on edge-lit displays, but not nearly as bad.
The only time it was distracting during normal viewing was when I paused the movie, and the pause icon appeared in the letterbox, you could clearly see the dimming zone light up (we were watching the movie on the ground, so outside of the ideal viewing angle).

Ouch, Major ouch, Sheesh, Yipes.
Is this the way it is with all of these E's, M's & P's with local dimming??

At this point 99.9% of what I and everyone else is watching on these televisions is 1080p and 720p upscaled--it looks great, crisper than on my old 1080p television. I'm using it right now as a computer monitor at 1080 res and it looks great doing that as well.
And you switched to the HDMI 5 input, right? Has the upscaling been handled the same way? Some others were complaining that it looked terrible or jaggy (that may have only been 1080i).

I guess it's based on this TechRadar article from July 10,2014. If the SiL9679 chip is the only one available, the same will apply to all 4K TV's currently on the market (not only the Vizio P-Series).

Based on this article from c|net July 31, 2014
"The current crop of 4K TVs from Samsung, LG, Panasonic, and Sony, etc. list HDCP 2.2 compliance in their specifications."
the samsung only has HDCP2.2 on the mhl port, which does not support 4K 60 Hz @ 4:4:4 due to the inclusion of HDCP. The rest of the ports support full HDMI 2.0 @ 4:4:4, and has been confirmed by nvidia 970/980 users.

Agree. The P65 seems to be the elusive one. I really wished I had a chance to see one before I pulled the trigger on the M65, but after following this P series thread for weeks I decided that the M would fit my needs for now.

From what I personally have seen, I prefer the flesh tones on the 65" better than those on the 60" and 70" Sharp panels.

I was able to compare the M652i-B2 head to head with a Sony KDL65W850B and was able the dial the M65 to produce a picture that was basically indistinguishable between the two. This was pretty remarkable (to me) as the Sony uses the Samsung S-PVA panel and this model has been regarded very highly.

So far I'm enjoying the M65 and hoping the honeymoon lasts a while. It will be interesting to see what the R65 brings to the party.

I did with the Tears clip H265 with a mkv wrapper provided through the Torrent link given several posts ago. The 4K 60fps clip played on the Vizio P70 through the USB port from a thumb drive through the multimedia app.
That's great news! One note, its 24fps, not 60. How did it look? Did you download just the 30s clip or the whole movie?

The same video would not play through the Vizio multimedia app DLNA option linked to my media server. Also, almost all my mkv files on my server will not play through the the Vizio DLNA multimedia app but a few would (Groundhog Day!). What would happen on most was that they would start, play about 5 to 10 seconds and then display in a small box at the top of the screen and play the first few seconds over and over.
I wonder if that's a bandwidth issue. The clips I posted average 25mbps, which might be saturating a less-than-perfect WiFi connection?

JStanton sent me 2 4K files, a mp4 and mkv that did work on a UB stock on my P70. Don't know much more then that about the files so I will let him speak to that. There was no sound but that could have been from the source to save space.
The ones I sent Eric were the same 30 second clips I posted torrent files for, both encoded with the same H.265 settings, just in different containers. And correct, neither had audio for space reasons.

Eugene, I tried and put a few nice files on a USB (Ink Drops, Wildlife, Spring, and such) all in mp4, but they didn't play. Got "File not supported" message :(
For everyone, not just Z-Mad: If you have any clips with some sort of non-restrictive license (Creative Commons or full open source), send me the links and I'll see if I can diagnose and re-encode them specifically for these Vizios.

By any chance have you (or anyone else) downloaded the Tears of Steel I posted first (the full 12 minute movie with audio)? All these other successes seem to be just the 30s clips. I'd be great to get even a single confirmation of that before I start with Big Buck Bunny (the raw 4k PNG frames just finished downloading after 3 days!)

Thanks,
Jim

It looked great and it was the whole movie. Also, I am hooked up by gigabyte ethernet for the tv and for the WD Live through a gigabyte switch. I have 130 MB/s download with Comcast!

The full movie worked great with sound through a thumb drive on my P70. Edit: By the way, since I have an optical connection back to my home theater receiver the sound was great. I have 7.2 and don't know what the clip was encoded into but it sounded awesome. The P70 exports the sound from the usb port through the optical great.

I was in best buy today and they didn't have vizio p series yet. One sale guy said he was kinda glad. He said it will be harder to sell those other 4k sets with that price difference. They pushed Sony 4k tvs pretty hard.
I did get to see the lg OLED tv there too. The contrast of that tv beat everything on the sales floor plus viewing angle.
Harder to sell means price cut now or get trampled on by the VIZIO competition.

The audio was encoded as Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3), 48 kHz sample rate at 448kbps from the lossless FLAC original.

Big shout out to the Blender Foundation for all their work making these movies and providing the uncompressed originals!

Don't forget: OLED is susceptible to burn in and does deteriorate over time. Maybe someday there will be an OLED that doesn't exhibit these characteristics but not yet.

I'm anxiously awaiting my p55 from Amazon next week. On this thread, however, it seems like everyone with the 55 has had some defect with their panel. There also have been several people who reported their p series from Amazon was DOJ. I'm curious, are there people who got the 55 and/or ordered from Amazon and not had a defective panel? Also, my last real TV was a fuji p50 (circa 2003). I see lots on how people coming from a VT60 may be disappointed. I'm curious how the fuji compares.
