I just noticed the 2014 P Series Vizio has HDMI 2.0. Would it be better to buy a 2014 P series over the 2015 M? The prices are very close at all the stores I have been checking.
I would say that it depends on what you want. Sure the extra zones is good. However, the more accurate motion control makes the 2015 M-series a more desirable TV in my opinion. I am keeping my 50 2014 p-series but I am also picking up a 55" M-series tomorrow as well.
I have not seen the new X850C but it is highly likely that the Vizio will have be bigger and have better blacks while the Sony will have better colors, scalar and 3d
I am going to get the Vizio M80 as soon as it hits the shelves in my local stores. It should have 1080p @ 120 FPS for gaming with a PC, 4K @ 30 FPS 4:4:4 for youtube with a computer, excellent latency, and great black levels and color once it is calibrated. Honestly, I am amazed at how good my M55 looks once I calibrated it most of the way. The only thing that will make it significantly better is if the TV is bigger and the M80 will allow me to get that without going ridiculously over budget.
I looked at this, BIG-TIME, and no. You are literally getting a awful (compared to the P-series) contrast ratio, and only half of the active LEDS. The new M-Series seems to just be a rehash of the old M-Series, they are def not competing with the '14 P-Series in terms of specs, as the P-Series still kills it (64 active zones, 50 mil:1 contrast) vs say the M series (32 active, and a 20 mil:1 contrast) these seem to be a repeat.
Also, here is the M-series NEW, port wise!
5 HDMI Ports
HDMI 1 - Version 1.4b (HDCP 2.2)
HDMI 2 - Version 1.4b (HDCP 2.2)
HDMI 3 - Version 1.4b (HDCP 2.0)
HDMI 4 - Version 1.4b (HDCP 2.0)
HDMI 5 - Version 2.0 (HDCP 2.2)
GET IT? Just like on the P-series only HDMI 5 is 2.0! M-series is literally identicle to the '14 P-Series (aside from a much lower contrast ratio, and only half the active leds)
Come on please at least look at the manufacturer specs
Specs are often misleading, especially when they are manufacturer’s specs. For instance rtings.com measured the contrast ratio at 4233 for the 2015 M-series and 3406 for the 2014 P-series.
And while the 2015 M-series has half the dimming zones it has much better control over blooming in certain situations.
HDMI 2.0 is only useful for computer connections since no movies are at 4K @ 60 FPS. There is no need for more than one 4K @ 60 FPS input.
Both the 2014 P-series and the 2015 M-series are great sets. Neither of them offer “awful contrast ratio”. In fact both of them are quite good in that area. However, the M-series is definitely better there due to a better implementation of the FALD zones even though there are less of them.
I have both TVs and I prefer the 2015 M-series over the 2014 Series when the prices are equal.
I hear you completely! I was thinking about the P series, but two things, I can't help reading the reviews of the m vs p and m being better, and if I get the P series 70 inch should I wait and see what Vizio does with the P series in the fall? What do you think about all of that?
The new P series should be announced here in a few months if you can wait. It may have some sort of HDR or more FALD zones but not info on it yet. All speculation right now
I asked this in the p series forum, but no answers. Both P and M have 1.07 billion colors I believe. Are these 10 bit panels or 8 bit and an enhancing process? Is it only available when uhd blu Ray hits, and now it's limited to 16.5 million colors on cable and blu Ray? I love the picture on my 55"(I do have dse banding across the screen, but backlight at 45 makes it 99% un noticeable, even on football and golf)it would just be cool to get a new 4k player this fall, and be even more blown away!!
My biggest concern about the '14 P-Series is some reviews called it out for having blooming issues (unexpected because of the amount of zones) that the '15 M-Series seems to lack. I have no way to compare these side-by-side, so I don't know how bad we are talking.
Also, Someone said that none of the 2015 Vizios use IPS panels, that is not true. The E-Series is a mixed bag, some of the 2014 P's are, there is no reason to believe that the 2015 M's will escape with all VA.
Edit: I was also going to ask about how the P-Series compares to Sony's XBR-X900B. Again the price is about the same right now for 60" for all 3 of these TVs.
The 4k is unimportant to me since the size/distance precludes it from making a difference. I'm only considering the P-Series because it's all around better than the M-series.
It's troubling the Sony doesn't seem to have local dimming.
I haven't noticed any blooming when watching TV or movies. I do notice it if I am off angle (outside my seating arrangement). The blooming can be affected by settings as well. The dimming algorithm acts differently based on the brightness setting and mode. I've had the 60P for more than a few months now and haven't been disappointed. The great thing is that dimming algorithms can be updated via firmware (we have already seen slight changes since the beginning).
The M series seems to be a great TV. Vizio has stepped up the algorithm used so that it can do more with less. Either TV would be a good choice to get you by as long as you know the drawbacks to each and can live with them. If you are in no rush to buy you may want to wait for the 2015 P series. I expect those in the Late August or Sept timeframe. Rumors are that it may have HDR/WCG as the "base" difference between last year.
It seems like the P series is slowly rolling out the updated 2015 firmware with individual motion controls, etc. Likely will also update the dimming schemes to the M-series algorithms.
Well, the P's seem to be drying up and can be found less than the M, and it really has one thing going for it: The pedestal style base will fit in my current set-up. Vizio's new wide feet will require a new wider stand for me. It just doesn't feel like a good reason to make a decision... but might be as valid as any other.
I don't understand how there can still be any large color issues with TVs any more. Most things are standard and the firmware/circuitry should be pretty mature. Maybe manufacturers are afraid to fix things like that in firmware because then people would need a new calibration... which would be fairly annoying.
Funny thing about the feet. Sony last year had the option of wide or narrow feet placement, this year they've gone back to pedestal style. I can't help thinking they went with wide feet a year earlier and found it to not work too well.
Edit: No, evidently they DO make changes that require re-calibration with firmware updates. Considering Vizio enforces firmware updates, I'm surprised Buzzard hasn't updated his calibration profile.
I will say, though that some of the screen shots, especially his comparison to the Panasonic VT were awful to my eye. I can't believe there is that much of a visible difference after calibration.
He no longer owns the P60 which is why it hasn't been updated. Calibration can do wonders
There are a few members who still own and have calibration equipment. Once the firmware gets to them we may see what if any changes have been made outside of the noticeable ones. The red skew is a panel deficiency, most likely related to the Sharp panels used (similar things were seen with Sharp TVs).
Rtings.com has the capability to fully test the calibrated colors for all of the TVs now. Hopefully he will post the Vizio color calibrations in the next week or so.
I didn't know there were any enthusiasts or semi enthusiasts who actually put any value/belief into the silly dynamic contrast ratio figures manus give out.
If I were a manu then I'd say my TV has a 2 trillion to 1 contrast ratio.
Not everyone who is on the site is an enthusiast we ha e people at every level. Sometimes people don't know not to look at the dynamic CR posted by manufacturers
Yikes, between the blooming and reds, the P-Series definitely looks inferior by comparison.
My real problem is the stupid wide base on the new M-series. Why couldn't Vizio have made it adjustable!?
Personally I wouldn't take photos as proof. For me I haven't had any issues with blooming on my p60 unless I am off angle (out of seating position). If you can see it in person.
The problem is TVs calibrated properly at a store is rare... budget TVs under good lighting and not looking like crap is even rarer.
But, yeah, I'll have to try to view these somewhere.
I do have a favor for anyone with a M-Series in 60".... can you measure the width of the stand? For whatever reason it is a spec no one lists and is pretty important. I've seen numbers range from 3' to 3' 9". One I could accommodate with some changes to my setup, the other I can't.
I still prefer the 2014 base... which is why I'm not giving up on the P yet.
I just got the new P-series update and I now rate the 2014 P-series higher than the 2015 M-series for the reasons described in the post below. I believe the 2015 M-series will get a similar update one day. However, for now the 2014 P-series is king of Vizio's lineup again.
The 2015 M-series now has the update and I would again rate it ever so slightly above the P-series simply because there is a red shift in the 10% grey scale pattern that I could not alleviate on the 2014 P-series. It isn't terrible but it did make me turn down the RED offset slightly lower than ideal to alleviate the issue. This issue does not exist on the 2015 M-series.
I am looking at the Vizio site, and I am a little confused. they have a 49" and a 50" version. huh?? I understand stepping 5", but 1" ?? is there any difference here? (I would need a smaller TV for wall-mounting reasons.) is there a quality difference in the smaller panels?
all the P and R series on the website are unavailable. I presume that they don't exist right now[mid-2015], they don't really have a release date, and the M is the best they have. which is not so bad, because the M series seems to have pretty good TVs.
There is very little cost difference between the 2014 P60 from Amazon vs the 2015 M60 from Sam's Club. I will be using this for watching OTA HD, football and movies. I will not be playing games nor will it be connected to a PC.
mpgxsvcd has recapped it pretty well here. He has both sets.

I don't own the M-series yet, but will be buying it soon. Since performance-wise they're very close, it's a toss up for me. but I prefer the feet stand and design of the M over the P (I don't like that dangling Vizio logo on the P series, nor the stand).
