I really think edge lit tv should be thing of the past and we should vote with our money and stop buying them! If vizio can make cheap Full LED tvs, then how come sony and Samsung can't make their mid level tv full led? paying 4500 for a edge lit is just crazy, and from what I hear, the JS9000 isn't great in dark room and it doesn't come close to 900b and IMO 900b is just okay, but isn't bad by any means, IMO 3800 is way too much for it, it should cost around 2700 and the 950b should cost 3800... Truly I wonder if Sony and Samsung are getting over?
I will take an edge lit Sony X900B over a Vizio M-series with their FALD implementation all day long. Just because it has FALD in the specs doesn't make it good.
I had to choose between the FALD Samsung JS9500 and the edge lit Samsung JS9000. Two reviewers had said except for night scenes, the picture quality was very similar on the two models. I decided to save $1,000 and get the JS9000. I think it works great. But you think I shouldn't have had the choice. You want to decide for me -- is that what you're saying?
Sonys new 850c series look awesome and are not edge lit ( at least not the 65 and 75 inch ones). This includes the w and x series... Loving my 65w850c so far, it is extremely uniform with deep blacks, very satisfied with it.
That's what an authorized Sony repair center told me a few years ago when they were first introduced. Not knowing what edge lit meant at the time, I just said "ok".
there isn't any more input it seems? I think we should take a stand and tell Sony and Sumsang, stop trying to make High end edge lit tv happen, cause there is nothing high end about edge lit tvs...
And all they will talk about is sales and how many millions they make so that means the product is working and that they are expecting to sell 4x the number of 4k led tvs this year than they did in 2014.
Agreed that it's inferior but I think it's a more uniform picture then edgelit based on what I have seen. Fact remains is 65 and 75 inch are direct let
I for one, am very sensitive to direct-lit sets in that I can see the individual LED's behind the panel. A lot of the direct-lit LG tv's have such a low amount of LED's that I would think the average person could easily make out the LED array. If you look closely at the posted pictures, you can make out the individual LED's. This is one major draw back of direct-lit vs edge-lit, even though I would rather take a slightly noticeable LED array over flash-lighting and clouding any day. For reference, I can also make out the LED array on the Vizio P series. I can not see it on the JS9500 or the X950B though.
and this is exactly why they will keep making edge lit tvs. 80% of what most people watch will still look good/acceptable. with a good FALD that number gets bumped up to probably 90-95%.
and its still possible to find edge lit tvs that have great uniformity. my 2nd 4k tv was 95% good, had almost no backlight bleed at all and blacks were very inky and dark scenes looked tremendous. i only returned it because i wanted a sharper picture with better colors, but ended up with a worse uniform tv. DOH!!
Samsung, Sony and the like are in this for the money. They could easily make FALD sets in the affordable bracket, but how would that benefit them? FALD is a premium feature that commands a premium price. I hate it too, but they'll milk this as long as the general masses need new TVs.
To simplify terms, FALD means full array local dimming. Technically full array is direct lit (LED's located behind the screen as opposed being located along the edges). The LED's in a FALD display are very close to the screen, placed in any number of zones. The better the display the more zones utilized. Non local dimming (direct lit only) generally have fewer LED's that are farther away from the screen and may or may not include frame dimming. Direct lit by itself is similar to the old style CCFL lighting. Edge lit has one main function, to allow for a thinner display. Higher end edge lit displays offer frame dimming which provides better contrast levels. Sony for example offers the 75x850c which is Direct lit and has frame dimming. The 75x910c is edge lit with frame dimming. The 75x940c is FALD.
What really confuses this scenario is that many of these panels are not made by the brand name on the TV. Sony for instance makes none of the panels they use. Where do they buy them? Where will they buy them next year? Are they manufactured to Sony's specifications or are they off the shelf? Do they go out to bid each year, based on price?
My edge lit JS9000 is still way darker then my HC3800 projector. Uniformity issues are only noticable if your anal and looking for it. Hopeing OLED will improve for next TV purchase.
I just picked up the newest Sony KDL65W850C and the lighting is really bothering me. About to most some pics up but is it normal for all 4 corners to have a black shadow on light images?
KDLw850C user thread will have my images when I hit 5 posts!
Sony said they will send me a new TV but I am going to guess it will be the same thing.
