What did you not like about the 85" Sammy JU7100? I'm guessing it probably has better blacks than the 85" 850D will have...

Thanks,

Hi All. I am new here. Thought I would post my experience. I bought my 55x850d about 2 months ago. It has been flawless. The blacks are definitely not the best but in typical Sony fashion, the overall experience is. What sold me on this tv is the 4k upscaling. I mostly watch regular cable and an occasional movie stream and it excels at that. When I chose the tv it was between this and the Samsung js8500 and the LG Oled. The samsung was super bright and the LG had incredible blacks but the Sony had awesome color and noticeably better upscaling. If money was no object I may have went with the LG because it was so cool, but it wasnt 4k and the Sony was $500 less. I made the right choice. Oh and Android tv is terrific.

Hello.. new here too.
I currently have the 55x810C - which is a great set. I bought it a few weeks ago from Best Buy. I do however have a few issues with it that make me want to consider the 55x850D.
On the 810, there "bright" corners when viewed at even the slightest angle and the color changes are really noticiable too. Also it randomly stops working with ARC through my Sony sound bar, and I have to "Reboot" the TV (which is unsettling) .Now, to be honest the picture is fantastic otherwise. 4K Youtube looks amazing, so does upscaled 1080P.
My problem being spending the extra $ to go up for the better Sony. (and the hassle of moving a large TV by myself)

Light bleeding on bottom of screen

Hey all, I just purchased a 65 inch 850D, I am still in my exchange policy and I am noticing some light bleed from the bottom of the screen. It is only really visible at night watching movies with no light that have the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. I am far from a videophile and this is my first expensive television ever, so I am wondering if this is just something that I need to live with on a edge lit television or if it is something that justifies an exchange.

Appreciate any Advice

When I first got my 850D, it had one bad spot of light bleed on the bottom immediately above the Sony. I lightly massaged it with a clean cloth and over a few of days, it went away. You can try that to see if it helps. Edge lits are prone to this sort of issue, but if it is bothersome, definitely exchange it.

Maybe it was the feed, but the motion was just not right. I couldn't imagine myself watching hockey on it, I felt I'd get a headache. That and I'd prefer my next set have HDR support, so since it didn't blow me away, I couldn't excuse its lack thereof.

Just delivered and installed a 75-inch for a client. Two Whiskey Tango Foxtrot moments. One, once you scan for OTA channels, there is apparently no way to add/delete them. One can edit the Guide but that does not help scrolling through 90+ OTA channels with Channel Up/Down. Next is that it appears that there is no way to change from Dolby Digital optical out to PCM. Comments? Other than that, it appears to be quite a step up from the "C" series.

I don't use optical on my 65", but going to Home - Settings - Sound - Digital Audio Out and changing to PCM didn't work? Or was there not even that option on the 75"?

Interesting. Then it looks like the 75" are stuck unless Sony updates the software.

Hey Everyone - I've had my 65' 850d for a couple of weeks now. I can't say I've spent a ton of time with it yet since it's in my family room and my wife mainly watches tv there. However, when I've watched the tv, I do notice a slight clouding on the edges when there's a letter box movie. I wouldn't exactly call it light bleeding but I would say its a small cloud. I know some others have also pointed this out. Not sure if its enough for me to return the tv. Would like to hear from some others as well if they have this "clouding". Also, I too notice the blacks are not that great.

Thanks to all who answer

Does anyone know if the optical out on our tv can send 5.1? I have a definitive technology soundbar that does not have hdmi arc. I would like to use the tv apps to stream movies in 5.1. I could use the PS3 but would rather keep things simpler. Thanks!

It's out, my local Best Buy has one set up in one of their Magnolia home theater rooms. They had it playing the Sony HDR 'Sushi' demo and it looked incredible on that, great color, and seemingly deep blacks, but that could have just been in comparison to the very bright highlights. Hard to tell how it would look from just an HDR demo, but on that demo it was awesome.

I haven't tried it, but Rtings.com says the 850D will output 5.1 Dolby or DTS via optical. The reference guide from Sony says that if you use linear PCM, it will only be 2 channel.

Just for your awareness, if you are planning on using the Amazon app on the TV, it will only give you 2.0 regardless of if you use optical or ARC.

Cool, I'll have to go take a look and see how it is. Pity they probably won't have content that will let me see how things like hockey and the like will look on it.

Wow. The reviewer's flat out refusal to use the Adv. Contrast Enhancement (i.e. initiating frame dimming) features of the X85D isn't doing it any favors. It's an IPS panel, you really don't have much choice in the matter (I have an X830c so I know).

Read their forum comments and follow on to the hdfever.fr review of the Samsung UBD-K8500. There they talked about the remarked difference in using an X85D's ACE mode on HDR material. It's a compromise I know, but with LCD technology you have to chose which flaws you can live with. (I still think an IPS panel mated with FALD, a rarity, is the way to go for LCD).

I bought a 900c, and it had light leaks so I swapped it for an 850c. I found the contrast on the 900 was poor, and it looked quite washed out. The 850 has great contrast, I am very happy. In saying this, it is also flawed and Sony are trying to source a replacement. They mentioned possibly replacing it with an 850d.

Now I am wondering if I will have a similar experience as I did with the 900c?

My main interests are watching sport, and movies at night. This is where I found the 900c a bit lacking, in a dark room.

Any opinions?

Interesting to hear why you think the D is a major step up from the C

The x850D has an IPS panel which means that blacks are going to be a bit lacking in a dark viewing environment. The 900c also had an IPS panel so you could expect similar black level performance.

The x850D has a native 4k resolution which means that all content, regardless of selected mode, up-scales to 4k.

Thumbs down Freezing Issue With Remote

I've been a very happy customer of the 850D. The only major issue so far is that the TV remote freezes up on you. Not like the old days of click and something happens. Often, you click a button, something in the software because unresponsive (like a computer running windows and the cursor keeps spinning). Then you can do anything. Not even turn off the tv or lower the volume. Major flaw in my opinion. I suspect this has less to do with the TV and more to do with the Android OS on the TV. I think a better design would be to let the tv remove commands have high priority over anything else that is occuring. Eventually the TV becomes responsive again after about 20-30 seconds when whatever was running stops running.

I bought the 55" 850D on Saturday.. returned it Sunday AM for another 65" 850C.

I LOVE my C version. The blacks are really black and I have had Zero issues with this tv and have owned it for about 6 months now. Its probably the best picture I have seen in a tv in a long time.. thus my choice to grab the last one with my return of the D model. Below are my light bleed pics I had on the 55" D. It was mostly on the left hand side.. mostly upper but in the dark room it was really bad. I didn't even want to give another one a shot.

My 75 inch 850D

I have had a 75 inch 850 D for a week now. It is an excellent TV with accurate color reproduction. Two issues I have had so far:

1) Light bleed from bottom right corner, specially bad with HDR in a dark room. It is very distracting.
2) Android is a little funky, TV automatically switches to Audio(from arc, switches the AV mode). Restart fixes that issue.

TV is going back and I am getting a replacement. That said, this is an absolutely amazing TV.

We just got our 85X850D in today, very excited for this model. Great price point from Sony, the build quality on the 850D vs. 850C looks and feels much better.

I bought a 55x850D today and where it is being mounted its on an angled wall. I wanted to use a full motion wall mount but never expected an AC power brick. Has anyone run across this and used a full motion mount? what did you do with the brick? I'm thinking if there was a way to mount the brick to the back of the TV it would be fine but haven't figured out a way to do that and the power cable is awfully short so it may not work regardless.

Bought a 55" 850D today.

PQ looked similar to the comparable Samsung model in the store and I did not like the external breakout box on the Samsung, big reason I bought this was to replace a F9000 for our bedroom.

So was quite disappointed with the external power brick and the ridiculously short power cord. You have zero mounting options when its a 3' power cord.

I don't know...I'm not wowed by it and Amazon PQ quality is horrible. I don't know if this is software or what. My F9000 with the 2014 breakout box would look poor for the first 2-3 seconds then steadily improve to 1080p within 15 seconds max and each step up was huge.

I played the same thing we watched on the F9000 on the 850D and after 2 minutes the streaming PQ was 2 steps below max quality. I am basing this on the F9000 usually goes through 5 steps of quality improvement until it maxes out.

Going to throw a 4K Roku on it and see.

I love my F9000 even being as old as it is but the external box was not going to work in our new bedroom. Might get the Velcro out if I can't get the 850D to work out.

I did the firmware update and it is pretty nice to use speed wise.

Just an update...the video quality over Netflix is terrible too.

Same 4K material(Marco Polo Ep 7) looks incredibly soft after 2 minutes of play on the Sony vs sharp and clear on the F9000.

I streamed some material off my laptop onto both and they look good on both.

Netflix for some reason also instantly darkens when you start to play it, just like on my 900B. Had high hopes because we like the physical look of this over the Samsung. Too bad they do not make a dumb version that you can use a Roku 4K in place of the Android.
