How's the sound on the television since it's front firing? Is it prominent enough that you don't think a regular TV viewer would need a soundbar?

I will check that out tonight. I never use the TV speakers. I always use my surround sound system.

Grats on the new 78" KS9800 Sheldon. Just buzzed through the thread and was checking the picts. i did notice some difference in the picts for HDR+ but i suppose in person would be better. I just found out my replacement set will be delivered next wednesday, during the VE shoot out at the CE in NYC next week. Fingers crossed that it will be a keeper!!! ""

I am really stoked to see how the HDR is going to be on the 65" KS9800 i have coming. I've been collecting up HDR 4K movies since they first started shipping the end of February. Think i am up to 28 titles now. Have watched most of them on my JS8500 i bought earlier this year to get my feet wet a bit in 4K/HDR. I know the tv is only edge lit and only hits about 600 nits in a small window for brightness but otherwise the picture quality was a such a huge leap up from our 52" HD1080p set from 2005 that we are happy with it. Will make an awesome bedroom set when that new KS9800 gets delivered and set up next week.

I was using my 78HU9000 with the SEK3500 Evolution kit and the K8500 to watch HDR 4k movies and that has supposedly 384 nits. The picture was amazing. The HDR on the KS9800 is much better and it should be since it is rated at 1400 nits. I really haven't had time to sit down and watch a movie because I'm too busy fooling around with the picture settings and trying to get the K8500 and my AVR to coexist with the KS9800. But the few scenes I've watched of Deadpool, The Martian and Mad Max are impressive. The picture should get better during the break-in period as you put more hours on it. Although, who knows with today's TV's if you really need a break-in period. I'm guessing you still do. I'm sure you'll love the picture on your KS9800. Good to see you on the thread.

I checked out the sound form the TV last night via the optical and the sound was pretty impressive although it's not surround sound. I think for the regular TV user, the sound would be more than adequate. It's all preference, but I felt the sound was the best I've heard from any TV that I have owned.

Sorry that I haven't posted much since Wednesday, but after calibrating the TV Tuesday night and getting the settings to my liking, Samsung decided to do a firmware update which has now thrown off the settings somewhat. The firmware version that came with the TV was 1100, the new one is 1111. I find this strange because on Wednesday, Samsung's site for the KS9800 showed version 1104 as the new firmware update. My fault for not turning software update to "Off" from "Auto". Although, I have heard form other members on the forum that sometimes Samsung pushes the updates through even if Software Update is set to "Off".

A couple of observations:
1) The smart remote that came with the set is actually not bad, but I would still rather use a universal remote from Universal Remote Control, Logitech, etc. Also, if you're in a dark room, it's hard to manipulate some of the controls. For this kind of money, Samsung or any other manufacturer should provide a good backlit remote.
2) Navigating through the Settings menu is not as user friendly as my 78HU9000. For example, if you are all the way down at the bottom of the menu on the HU9000, you can just push the down arrow and it will take you right to the top of the menu. With the KS9800 you can only go up to get to the top.
3) The HUD+ feature is nice, but you still have to tweak the settings after you turn the feature on. Sometimes, the color gets too deep, but this TV is new and I'm sure Samsung will improve the feature with firmware updates. But as most of us Samsung users know, Samsung doesn't really tell us what a firmware update is improving or fixing.
4) Viewing from the side is still somewhat washed out, but much better than my 78HU9000. It's still a LED.

Hopefully, I'll be able to give more feedback over the weekend. Can't wait till we have more actual users so we can get other member's views.

Sheldon,

Can you give us an idea of how many degrees off center you are before the picture degrades? How does it compare to your previous set?

Nice buy Sheldon, looks killer.

If possible can you tell me how washed the image gets vertically? Weird (and perhaps stupid...) question I know as it is a VA panel but it would be useful for me to know. Congrats!

Check that tonight, too. I know my 78HU9000 looked fine when I was doing my exercise routines on the floor right in front of the TV. My stand is 28" high and the HU9000 stand raises the TV maybe 3 or 4 inches more off the stand. I know when I had my 71" Samsung DLP in the same room a couple of years ago on a lower stand, the picture was washed out when I was exercising on the floor. I'll be honest since I got the KS9800, my morning exercise routine has been put on hold to check out the new TV.

Sheldon, my 65" KS9800 came in yesterday and I was able to fiddle around with it for a little while, but I couldn't find the HDR+ setting to save my life... where the heck is it located?

Go to settings, then to "Picture" then to "Special Viewing Mode", then to "HDR+". Sports and Game mode are in that menu, too.
I inserted 2 photos to demonstrate once you are in "Settings".

I'm wondering if Samsung only put HDR+ on the 78" and not the 65". I would call Samsung and check on that. The 65" European version had HDR+ in the review.

On the phone with them as I type this. They're clueless... I had the thought about the 78" as well. If that's the case I'll be pretty upset. The hardware most likely can support it, but they're just not implementing it.

He's on 1111 coming from 1100. Perhaps they are different based on screen size?

Hdr+ is being rolled out to all 2016 KS models, if you don't have it now you'll have it eventually.

This is correct as far as I know. John Archer also mentioned it in his review. (9500, which is the European version of the 9800)

I would assume that if I have a different firmware version 1111 and you are on 1105, it must have something to do with the size of the panel. I went from 1100 to 1111 and never saw 1105. Also, good luck talking to the 1st level of Samsung support. Most of them are clueless. You have to go to the 2nd tier of support to get someone with any knowledge. You usually can get the answer on the AVS forum, but this TV is too new right now. Not much info available at the moment. On Samsung's website the current firmware download is 1104 - go figure.

So I actually got to "elite support" because the TV is in a certain category that calls for their expertise, as they put it. The woman who I spoke to has absolutely no idea why the feature is missing and she also doesn't know why I get that odd message in the brackets (see previous picture), when I check for a firmware upgrade. She is reaching out to the product development team and I should hear back on Monday. In all honesty, I think I just need a firmware update and for some reason my unit came with this odd version. A factory reset didn't change anything either.

I had my new 65" KS9800 up and running for such a short time earlier in the week that i didn't even get a chance to go thru the menus and such to see what was what and where it was located. I did find out that my replacement was in Sacramento yesterday and it is in Reno now where i live. So i called the delivery set up people to see if i could arrange an earlier time to get it delivered than Wednesday the 22nd in the afternoon. I have to call them back Monday morning to see if i can get it done before then. So with a little luck, i might get it Monday or Tuesday. Then i can start playing with it and start adding some input to this thread!!! I will be checking that firmware number and also the HDR+ and see if my tv shows it. Will be interesting after the weekend to see what new reports Sheldon has to offer up on this critter. Poor guy is getting bombarded with questions since he is just about the lone person in the world with an actual working version of a KS9800 in his house. (little joke since i too have one sitting here for 5 days now in a box to be returned when the new one arrives).

Ok..Placed a order for the 65KS9500 (European version of the 9800 series) yesterday, should arrive in my country end of the coming week, so hopefully delivery next Friday.

It's gonna replace my JS9500 which still delivers a awesome picture and I read everywhere the 9800 series is much improved to the series of last year so my expectations are very high.

Gonna update with my impressions when the set has arrived.
losservatore and ray0414 like this.

That's great that you have the JS9500 and that you will be getting the KS9800.I would love to see the comparison.

I had the JS9500.

It will be a comparison by memory then.

We will unbox the 9800 and if it is working we will put the 9500 in the box and the shop takes it with them..

Good morning, My 65KS9800 came with firmware version 1111 which did include HDR+.

So far, I'm very impressed with this tv and plan to watch The Martian in 4K tonight using my Samsung UBD-K8500.
