Vizio Beta-Bug & General Firmware Release Discussion Thread

New Post From Matt on Beta 3.2.8.3 Firmware Release

"Sorry for the long absence... we had a quiet period while we were waiting for the LeEco situation to resolved (which ended this week).

Good news is that the teams have been working really hard on new firmware.

Version 3.2.8.3 is a Test Release which significant and numerous changes...
Too many to enumerate here, but the highlights consist of:

  • EDID improvements and stability changes.
  • CEC improvements.
  • ARC stability improvements.
  • DolbyVision improvements (including fixing some Netflix, Vudu playback issues).
  • Additional backlight enhancements (blooming reduction, fine tuning, etc).
  • Local dimming improvements (algorithm, fine tuning...).
  • Fixes for various stability issues, freezes, hangs on boot, etc.
  • 100's of small bug fixes and improvements.

We have Golden Reference files that will be posted on Monday (Here), along with official release notes.
But, I wanted to get this out for the holiday weekend to this group.

This firmware also unifies our 2016 and 2017 code bases and checks in significant architectural
changes for futures releases and performance enhancements. The VIZIO 2017 press event is on
April 24th in New York and we will be pre-announcing some significant features that will roll-out
this Summer. Stay tuned...

What I can reveal here (and what many of you already found) is that we added on screen menus and a
new OOBE. This was a huge undertaking as we hooked up the UX to the underlying settings framework.

There are a couple of known issues that we are fixing ASAP including 11 point adjustments but
hopefully you will see the addition of our sidebar as a step forward.

The sidebar and new OOBE will work with older VIZIO remote that have Dpad or any universal remote
that can utilize VIZIO IR codes.

To say thank you to our beta testers here... VIZIO has developed a new remote control with a Dpad
called the XRT135. If you are on the Beta Test List and don't have a remote that has VIZIO Dpad...
eMail Beta@Vizio.com with your (Serial Number and) shipping address and I'll send you a free remote.

Please test and report issues you find. We did our best to regression test from Sprint 1.3 to
Sprint 2 (this code) but there are major changes to this code. I'll be monitoring this group and
working with the team over the next weeks to knock down issues you find.

Again, thanks for your patience... and stay tuned for more improvements, new content and new
features over the coming months.

- Matt"

Latest Beta/Early Firmware 3.0.13.5

Message Post 39618

Matt's Post:

"Sorry for the delay... just landed and got access...

We enabled 3.0.13.5 a couple of hours ago for the group. This has the following updates:
1. Re-mastering of the brightness around subtitles... moved to the proper graphics plane
2. ARC updates including fix for DD+ pass through
3. Fix to restore 5.1 (was being mixed down to 2.1)
4. Black bars (letterbox) fixed in HDR playback
5. FALD performance fine-tuned
6. Netflix trick mode issues addressed
7. Backlight blooming issues tuned-out
8. Various small fixes and adjustments...
The wide [picture] mode default for CAST is known issue and already fixed in an upcoming release but I did not want to hold up this release for that testing. Couple of other things being addressed in future release as well.

Please provide comments on this release as you test.

If you are posting something specific about PQ performance it really helps to have source information, content info, time-code, etc and we will do our best to reproduce and tune.

Also, several of you have commented about continuing black out issues on Xbox. We have worked with MSFT on the fix, they have it completed.. but they are targeting a March release. I have escalated through several executives I know but no news on whether they can bump that up. Will continue to push...

Also, I dropped a hint on Twitter, but thought I would mention it here as well. We are working on several new features and improvements that I am very excited about. They will roll out between now and June-ish. I'll keep you updated as we go forward and provide more details as we are ready at each stage.

And if you have a Google Home... hopefully you are enjoying using voice to kick off content to your VIZIO displays :-)

As always, I appreciate your participation and patience as we continuously make this product better. Your feedback is extremely important to me and the team."

How To Get On Matt's
Beta & Early Wide Firmware
Release List

Updated: Feb 5 / Apr 23 / May 24 / Jul 28, 2017

(May be updated if I get a reply from Matt about clarification on SN requests.)

If you have 15 or more posts throughout the AVS Forum site, you can
send Matt McRae a PM (Private Message) with your P-Series
and M-Series Serial Number located in the Tablet (the SmartCast App)
or on the label on the back of the Display. (The numbers are rearranged
a bit between the two, but either one will work just fine.)

Some have posted they can PM with a lot less than 15 Posts. I don't
know if the Forum changed this, but you can try and see if it works
if you haven't reached 15 'normal' site posts.

Update: Jul 28th, 2017

I now do not recommend doing public posting of your Serial Numbers
to any Thread. There may be hijacking of the posted SN going on.
Do only a PM (Private Message) of your SNs to Matt McRae from now
on.

Older Info on Public Posting:
Spoiler!

Don't expect a reply from Matt, or that you'll get the Beta or early
Firmware Release so quickly. It could take days, right after Matt
posts the announcement. Thereafter, it could take quite a few
weeks or months before Matt gets back into the Forum to grab any
additional requests.

Please do not make multiple requests of your Serial Number. If
more than 45-to-60 days or more goes by, I'd suggest you wait
until Matt shows up in the Threads again when announcing a new
Beta Release.

Remember, Matt is quite busy and once in a while shows up to collect
new requests. He's not reading the posts for weeks or months at a
time, let alone daily. He gathers SN Request in batches whenever he gets
back to the Forum, so it can take a very long time to get on the List. You
may have to frequent the Forum to catch a rare post by Matt and then
quickly follow-up with your request, by PM only.

When there's a Wide Firmware Release, be patient. These
are rolled-out in batches... not all at once to everyone. It may take
some Displays weeks, maybe a month or more to finally get the Firmware.

As long as you are regularly turning-off your Display 30-minutes
or more, daily, you'll eventually auto-receive either:

A special, By-Request Beta Firmware and the Early access to a
Wide, General Release Firmware Update if you got on the List.

or

Only the Wide, General Firmware Release to everyone if you
are not on the Beta/Early Wide Release List.

If you just purchased a new TV/Display, and it has an older
Firmware, be patient... it will auto-update to the current Wide
Release, perhaps in stages with other Firmware Releases first.

(End of Jul 28th, 2017 of this section on PM Serial Number Requests.)

From the Vizio site (with some updated or corrected info that I inserted/revised):

Instructions for updating using Wi-Fi

The firmware on your SmartCast Home Theater Display will automatically update the first time you connect your Home Theater Display to the internet. If a subsequent update is sent out the Display will automatically download it when the Display is powered off and once downloaded, will automatically install it.

After your Display has updated, you will receive a message the first time you power it on saying a new update has been installed.

If for some reason your SmartCast Home Theater Display hasn't received the update or your device didn't fully download the update, try the below steps:

  1. Press the Link button on the basic VIZIO remote that was included with your SmartCast Home theater Display.
  1. Open the VIZIO SmartCast App on a tablet or smartphone
  2. Tap on the menu button. From there scroll down and tap on Setup a New Device.
  1. Follow the setup prompts. After you reconnect the TV to the network it should search for and download an update

If your Home Theater Display is not downloading the update, and you have tried the above option you can manually download the update as noted below:

  • Download the Firmware Version from the above link(s).
  • Once downloaded, extract the .zip file (1 .zip file with 2 files inside), and place the 2 files onto a USB drive. Make sure there is nothing else on the USB drive and do not put the files in any kind of folder. VIZIO recommends using a 2gb flash drive and the flash drive must be FAT formatted.
  • Turn the Home Theater Display on and place the TV on an input with no content showing. You should see the "No Signal" message.
  • Insert the newly prepared flash drive into the USB 2.0 slot (the black USB port).
  • A banner will appear at the top of the display acknowledging the installation of a new software.
  • The display will then reboot (power off and then power on).
  • When the Display powers back on it will state DO NOT INTERRUPT THE UPDATE, and show a progress bar. When the progress bar is full, the Display will reboot.
  • To verify the new software has been installed, open the VIZIO SmartCast App on a tablet or smartphone and access the Home Theater Display Settings (The 'Gear' Icon).
  • Select System > System Information > Display Information.
  • The Firmware 'Version' (below 'Model Name') should be updated to show the number of the firmware you just installed.
  • Be sure you are Looking at "Version" and not "Cast Version."

Getting HotFix for Beta 3.0.10.7 (Backlight/ALZ Fix)
So selecting Service Check on Tablet then turning off TV for about 30 minutes will work right?

I didn't get it when I first turned my tv on today when I got home. I don't have display unplugged. That doesn't seem like it would make sense to me.

I also didn't notice anything right off the bat when selecting service check on the tablet. Is that normal?

if a new firmware is available to you, you can always trigger a check by setting up a new device in the smartcast app. Run through to get the update then skip the rest.

If you have previously sent Matt your Serial Number,
you're on the List for early Wide Releases and any Beta
Release. If not, you only get the general, Wide-Release
Firmware, which currently is 2.2.7.4 or 2.2.7.7.

The new Beta had only gone live around 7pm EST.

Three ways to grab Firmware:

1) After doing Service Check, you won't see anything
happening. Turn off the Display for 15-to-30 minutes.
Perhaps leaving it off for hours is ok, or repeat the 15-to-30
minutes off, as often as needed if in a hurry to grab the
Beta Firmware.

2) Un-pair/Re-pair the Tablet or add a new device.

3) Factory Reset.

Depending when your SN is 'ready' to be served to your Display,
you may have to redo any of the above steps again and again,
except with step 1), you can leave Display off overnight after
the Service Check, and I suppose it'll be there upon power-up.

I think just by turning off the Display daily, then powering-up
the next day always checks the Vizio server anyway. One
Service Check per day then power-off time for the night should
be all that is needed, unless you're in a hurry to grab it as fast
as possible.

I didn't get it when I first turned my [Display] on today when I got home.
I don't have display unplugged. That doesn't seem like it would make sense to me.

Unplugged? That's part of the Power Cycle procedure that
may clear-out some bug-a-boos when certain problems crop up
and not part of any Firmware Request procedure:

a) Power Off.
b) Unplug.
c) Press-n-Hold Power Button on Back for 15 Seconds.
d) Plug Back In and Power Up.

Anyone else noticing degraded black bar detection performance compared to how good it was with 2.2.7.4? I feel like it was a nice deep inky black in the bars with that firmware and now with the latest they are not quite as deep when watching a movie in a dark room at night.

Yeah, I noticed the Backlight doesn't go to that 'nearly off'
look like it did before.

@Matt McRae

I'm trying to cut and paste Matt McRae's link, but can't seem to succeed here. Maybe because I have only 1 post so far or I'm doing the "cut and paste" incorrectly. In my first post, clecakyngmfd was kind enough to assist me in sending my serial number to Matt last week; however, I'm still at firmware 2.2.7.4. I tried to do the the 3 options suggested here: a) Service Check, b) unpair/re-pair the remote-tablet, and c) admin factory reset, but my P55-C1 doesn't seem to get the latest beta firmware yet.

@CleCakYngMfd and @Matt McRae , thank you for your assistance.

My third post: Wow, I think the link I just cut and pasted worked because the link is now colored blue and appears to be the same as in the other firmware request links. Hope this request goes through. Thanks again.

Please let me know what I need to do in order to receive the beta firmware. As suggested, I've private messaged and also replied to the M series and P series threads. I'm still showing 2.2.7.4. I would like to see if the new beta version helps with an error in the Directv Now app. All channels start to play however it only shows the same loop over and over. I have the M50-D1 and my S/N is 21LTMWUXAS50336.

On the tablet remote, in System Information, hit Service Check and confirm. Nothing will happen, but turn off your TV for around 30 minutes. If you got an update, it should display info at the top when you turn it back on.

If the TV doesn't turn back on, don't panic - it might be still updating. I think mine took ~45 minutes to update when I did it last.

If you don't get the update, that means Matt didn't put you on the push list for early firmware yet, so you might want to PM him.

The quickest to get an early Wide Release or a Beta Release, is just after Matt makes such announcement where he goes through the messages to gather the Serial Numbers when he has the time.

Otherwise, it could take some time to get on the List. I don't know how often he checks the posts. I do know he's checking the posts for any problems with the latest Beta, so perhaps he's collecting Beta Requests at the same time.

A normal 'turn off Display overnight' is all that's needed to grab any Wide-Release Firmware, and... assuming your SN got on the Request List, the Beta Firmware.

Perhaps the other methods that trigger a Firmware Update check can be done several times a week if you're anxious to grab it - if your SN is active on the Beta List.

It's possible many requests may not make it in time if the Final is about to be released. All one can do is wait. You'll either get it... or won't, I suppose. Timing is everything and Matt's a busy dude.

If you don't get the update, that means Matt didn't put you on the push list for early firmware yet, so you might want to PM him.

Thanks for the info I'm just eager to play deus ex in HDR on my brand spankin' new Xbox One S. Its was a super bummer to have to switch back to HDMI 5 and make do with 4K because of how washed out and ugh the game looked in HDR.

Timing is everything and Matt's a busy dude.

.
I caught wind of this awesome thread a little late in the game since i just recently got the XBOX one S and had access to HDR Gaming. Otherwise i was so happy with my P50-c1 that i never needed to trouble shoot anything. I guess if the final release is on the horizon i'll just continue to play through HDMI 5 instead and patiently wait to experience HDR gaming. Maybe i'll just get lucky and have the update tomorrow morning.

Thanks for responding! Happy Holidays to all!!!

Beta 3.0.12.2

@Matt McRae

Thanks Matt. Backlight issues are fixed. Forza Horizon looks great again in HDR, like it did with 3.0.6.4.

------
Separate issue but very minor. Is there something that can be done with the jaggedness and aliasing? If not that's perfectly fine, just a really minor issue I'm curious about.

Also, does anyone know how I can tell I'm getting 24p playback on my Ultra HD movies and should I be getting that automatically on 4k blu-rays through the Xbox One S?

@Matt McRae

Since PMing has proven to be ignored, will this post be too?
3rd request in over a month to add sn 41LFTRVFBS00032 for 3.x betas.

When is there going to be a mature beta process, like Apple's?
